The electronics' prices are most likely due to the 20% import tax for most countries out of the EU. It's not that big of a problem really, since you don't really need to buy more than one coffee machine or microwave; and with the general lower cost of groceries it all balances out. BTW, people are often confused by the cost of groceries/per salary ratio but there is actually a simple explanation: food vouchers. Lots of companies would choose to include, for example, vouchers worth 200 BGN that can then be used in supermarkets. Vouchers are not taxed, so they are very attractive to employers and it keeps the workers happy as it is seen as a bonus. And these vouchers are not counted in official salary stats, so something to keep in mind. :)

If you have a driving license you may apply for so called SPARK car sharing. It's pretty well organizaed - you can take a car basicaly from the street. Taking a car is very easy - all you need is a smartphone application (called also SPARK). The, passing the registration process, you need to supply the payment method. And that's all. You can simply use ths application to start a session with a car and go whereever you want (sorry - not abroad). The call-center is well organized and speaks english as well. Such approach will help you in a shopping, when you have to carry a heavy bags and so on. Just an idea ...

Don’t forget to buy a dishwasher salt so your dishwasher works properly. This is a difference between whole of Europe and North America. In Europe dishwashers come with a built-in water softener, unlike in North America where houses have water softeners. Therefore they need a dishwasher salt so the softener can work properly. Sofia’s tap water is very soft, so a setting of 1 or 2 is perfect. Once the compartment is empty, the dishwasher has a light which warns you to refill with salt the compartment. And you don’t need to buy rinse aid bcs detergents have in themselves.

as Bulgarian living between Australia and Bulgaria, I can confirm that Bulgaria is way cheaper for properties for rental or purchase, compare to rest of the world. For quality of olive oil, you need to look for greek grocery shops around in Sofia ad buy from there. The best greek brand is "Minos" as had lowest acidity and also is manufactured at Chania area on Crete island-known for best quality. I usually buy 3-4 litre tin cold pressed extra virgin olive oil and last few months, as I only use this for salads and cooking as well for years. There is also Italian grocery shops if you need good quality fresh pasta. Lutenica is better than Ajvar, just look not to have starch in it or potato puree. Best Brand is " Дерони Царица -едро смляна лютеница".Best quality for any cold meats known as Lukanka and cheese is Маджаров- he is internationally recognized and also have trade mark and protected by strict standards - his products are really good.

SO thrilled to see you actually really stayed and did not run away screaming, hands in the air :) Economy is bad everywhere and living costs are rising driven by inflation and property prices. Still Bulgaria remains more affordable. I guess proportion remains the same. As for the electronics - yes, might be more expensive. This is a mater of market size. Cannot compare Canada to Bulgaria. In Canada margins can be lower because turnover is higher - more stuff is sold because market is much larger. Therefore markups here might be higher for the same product to make economic sense to sell it at all here. W5 I believe is Lidl's brand. I get all my home chemicals there because they work great and are much cheaper. Forgot about other "brand" home chemicals long time ago. Wish you all the best and looking forward to next videos! Cheers!

Alina, in place of a toaster, I highly recommend an air fryer. Especially for a single person, but also great for two ppl. I've been traveling and lived in dozens if not a hundred kitchens, and I swear the air fryer is a god sent. It does everything beautifully no matter how skilled or unskilled a cook you are. It's super easy to clean too. But what's really great - your kitchen is always clean, since all the spatter is contained within. I cooked not almost but EVERY day in it and most days even several meals in a day in an air fryer. Do give it a thought

Hey Alina , local here. If you are going to use the public transport i suggest you to get an year card subscription , it costs 365 lev per year and you can use every transport in the city as much as you want, trams , underground , busses everything. You can get one of these near by the Sofia university, most probably in many other locations. There is just where i buy mine :). it is in the underpass near the underground station. For IKEA you can go to the one located in the circumferential it is near the ring mall and it is as big as the mall of Sofia itself :) . I see you got an apartment in the city center so if you want to own a car you will have to rent a parking lot or a garage as it is a zone and if you are living in a zone you can't just park there, you need to pay per hour unless you have a permition and if you don't own the home you cannot apply for a parking spot unless you speak with your landlord but this is a pain.

Now, don't be envious of me Alina, but in my house, I have two dish washers. My left hand and my right hand. Ha, ha. I do have one but never use it. I have never found one which does as good as a job as I do. People say you have to pre-rinse, but then that's half the job! I'll just do it myself, but that's just me. Love the apartment, very nice.

If you get a powerful dehumidifier it will make your apartment feel very cozy in the winter.

So happy you are getting settled into such a beautiful apartment! Ooo avjar! We love that spread. First time we had it was Serbia, I bought it thinking it was pasta sauce, made a pasta with it… and ooo it was good! 😂

Re: washer/dryer combo. I think they have similar units at the Robertson Residence that you stayed at in Kuala Lumpur. We stayed there in Dec, after watching your KL vlogs, and that was the one we had. Great apartment tour. Looking forward to see more of Sofia.

Great! And as far as I know Sofia , according to the streets , you are really downtown Sofia. There is a beautiful handcrafted cloths and accessories boutique on Angel Kuanchev 22 street /Miss and Mrs-art. You will love it for sure.

Welcome to Bulgaria, I knew you would choose this apartment over the other ones. To be fair, so would I, it is homelier than the others. I made a few points while I was watching your video. Hopefully they will be helpful to you. - The wardrobe in the bedroom looks like an IKEA Pax wardrobe. I spotted a sticker at the back inside one of them. Have a look and if I am right you can customise it yourself including having drawers. Check the Komplement range for the Pax wardrobes customisation. - Washer/Dryer combo is fairly common for small apartments throughout Europe including Bulgaria. The dryer capacity is smaller than the washing capacity. Check with your instruction booklet the load it can take. Even though it is possible to have a full cycle of washing and drying without your intervention I would not recommend it. It is better to only put it on wash, then take everything out and shake it to decrease it then put it back in and put the machine on the drying cycle. Otherwise your clothes will always come out very creased. - Айвар would be the Macedonian name for it. In Bulgaria it is called лютеница and we all eat it and love it. Many are making it at home from scratch. Next time perhaps try some of the Bulgarian brands 🙂 - We are big on nuts, there are specialist shops just for nuts both roasted and raw. These are the best and cheapest places to get nuts from.

Alina, I am pretty sure this is Fyresdal IKEA bed you have in the second bedroom. If I am right , it is extendable and you probably have two matresses stacked on top of one another.

Enjoy your stay in Sofia it's a well preserved and safe place not infected by the hordes that infested other capitals like London, Madrid or Brussels

I'm happy for you. Gorgeous apartment. I have been following you for a while off and on, but especially since the Bulgaria move since I too will move there (Varna) in the near future so these have been helpful for me to understand the practical, day to day life learnings that I need. Happy settling in!

As a person lived in both cities, her videos would not help you alot. Varna is very different than Sofia in all ways. The prices in Varna could be like 30-40% down compared to Sofia, the living style and even the weather are different. In my opinion the peoples are different too. I personally don't like the the attitude of the Varna residents.

If you want to understand Varna, check "Justin Eastern Europe" videos. He is brit making videos about Eastern Europe, but he personaly love Varna.
