It's worth noting that Wizards of the Coast went with the cardboard coins to save money, but failed to realize that the foil pattern for the front of the coin made it just a hair heavier than the back, making coin flips a tad rigged. It's why Nintendo and TPC excluded the usage of them once they took over for the international scene.

Vintage coins are roughly the size of a half dollar. If you're collecting those, a half dollar album (not folder) could be a good way to store them.

I have one too! My dad would watch the show and even play Pokemon with me (the TCG mainly, but I also let him borrow my Colosseum team so I could hook up my Gameboy and battle with my Sapphire team) and he always hated the plastic coins for being too flimsy to get a really good flip with them. He always always asked me to get "the Lugia coin" when we played the TCG :) I still have it and all my old cards, even my old (VERY bad) decks that were made with zero focus on strategy and exclusively just trying to put either me or my dad's favorite Pokemon together into a deck. I don't get to visit him as often anymore, but when I do we still play a few rounds with our old decks, and always with the Lugia coin of course.

So I'm not sure when this started, but the pokemon tcg uses a dice as a coin when playing in person. Heads are evens and Tails are odds

Dice are fairer than coins, since there's tricks you can use to rig coin flips that are hard to spot unless you know what you're looking for

Dice are easier to do multiple at a time if you gotta flip 3 coins. Coins tend to get flipped, and go flying off the table

Coins are totally legal but dice are preferred. Pokémon TCG competitive rules state a valid coin flip must be tossed from shoulder height and rotate at least 3 times. Of course this is hard to validate and a player can abuse this by calling over a judge to say your coin flip is invalid if the initial flip isn’t in their favor. It’s a lot harder to rule shark/bs a dice roll when the rules on a valid roll are: dice must be transparent and must roll and land within the play area.

I've gone one step further for coins. There are gold coins made for every pokemon movie! they come in their own cushioned holders and were given out to people who saw the premiers in Japan I personally have the Pokemon Heroes one, but you can get them for any movie really.

When I went to Japan recently the Pokémon Center stores had vending machine gacha purely for exclusive flip coins. I think that's where Psyduck, Slowpoke, and Ditto come from.

the nice thing about pokémon's TCG coins being relatively cheap for the most part is that getting a coin with one of your deck's featured 'mons is REAL EASY. so you can lean SUPER HARD into deck vibes.

Ooh noo what have you done! I was getting cheap rare coins everywhere. I have 325 different coins now and I'm far from done. Rip I am obsessed with pokemon coins. They are very cool! I recently acquired this silver(not gold) cracked ice holo chansey for a few bucks but I could not find any information about it anywhere. It. Doesn't seem to exist, but I have it. It seems to be extremely rare. I also recently managed to get a 1996 chansey holo splotch for a few bucks 😁 I still need most of those other vintage plastix coins like the onyx/doduo/alakazam etc they are sooo awesome, sadly they are already too expensive for me. I can talk about this for hours! I got 3 different Aerodactyl variations! 2 vileplume variations 2 meowth and several chansey variations for these cardboard ones. There's also the pikachu base set 2 but so far I've only found 1 type of this one.

In my brief Pokémon TCG craze when I was younger, the coins were actually what I cared about the most. The cards were whatever, I wasn't gonna play with them anyway. But the coins? Very fun to both look at and touch. 🤭 I think my favorite coin has to be the so called "Beef Tendercoin" that was only released in a promotion with Burger King in the early 2000s. 🤔

Im not sure if this has been tried before but with vintage video game comsoles people use a retro brite to restore the plastic from yellow to it’s original grey or white color. Maybe it could work on the coins aswell? Just giving a tip

Also, separate comment so you can see it, with the white coins, try slathering them with with peroxide cream (like what's used for hair) and exposing them for UV light for a while! Its a trick used in a lot of hobbies to take the yellow out of the plastic and restore them, and I bet it'll work for the coins too.
