Hi Emily there is a big difference in the lower half of your face. I worked as a senior RGN (UK) or RN (US and Canada) for several years in maxillofacial and I've never seen this surgery - it's not routinely done. It is a major maxfax surgery and should never be undertaken lightly - no surgery should. What a difference though and I'm really glad your breathing and sleep has improved. I think you look great and that is a film star smile for sure. I thought your face was pretty before, but it is more even now and looks great. No one has a completely symmetrical face - we just don't. In fact that is one reason why CGI faces never look "right". All in all I'm glad you're happy with the results and you look fab. Both braces and invisiline can cause a slight lisp, but that should settle down once you're used to not wearing them. Best wishes.

Your videos have motivated me to go back and address my breathing and septum issues again. I had a corrective surgery in my early 20s and now I am 36 years old and have horrible sleep apnea, asthma and allergies and surprise surprise the septum is once again deviated (apparently its actually quiet common and people end up going back for atleast one more follow up procedure). I also live in Canada and the waiting list is long and thanks to covid will take even longer to get my turn. I am also in the process of getting invisiline, something I put off for years (even with having 2 great extended benefit plans). Goes to show how so many things have to line up before we finally take steps to help ourselves and do what's needed to improve our quality of life. Thanks Emily for all your updates 😊.

Hi Emily! I discovered your channel when I was 3 weeks post-surgery. I had double jaw surgery as well, my issue was a skeletal class 2, so my bottom jaw didn't grow enough and my teeth didn't meet when I chewed, I had migraines and neck and shoulder pain daily. The surgery went well although my swelling was a lot on the inside of my throat and I almost had to be intubated, thankfully it all worked out. I had been preparing myself for months so the first 3 weeks I was fine, and then the psychological aspect hit and that's when I found your first video about this. It helped so much I can't even explain, I was crying the whole time I watched the video 😅 My surgery was on the 10th of August 2019, and this month I'm going to remove my braces 😁 It's been a really tough time, I experienced a lot of articular and muscle pain and have been doing physical therapy for over a year, and things just wouldn't improve! I couldn't open my mouth past 32mm and finally, in the last month everything started to improve and I can now eat without pain 😭 Your videos have been incredibly helpful and I have felt seen, because despite all the support I had from my family and friends, after two months everyone assumed I was fine, and your videos helped, because you were 2-3 months ahead in your recovery and it helped to have something to look forward to! I then discovered your booktube channel and I have watched every video ever since. Thank you for sharing your experience and sorry for the long-ass post 😂

I love long-ass posts! I'm so happy my videos have been helpful to you. I know that when I was recovering, I was watching/reading everything I could find! The surgery, while difficult physically, was also more challenging psychologically for me too. I'm glad you're feeling better!

Oh I made the mistake of looking just before the surgery but when I read that "it's totally normal to feel like you're going to die at one point during the recovery"... @@beautywithemilie For me it was my parents! My mom slept in my room and my father came everyday. The second night I woke up twice and got up by myself to go to the bathroom and I said a lot of senseless things and kind of freaked my mom out 😅 Turns out it was just a weird reaction to coming off the general anesthesia... I found the beginning physically really hard but at the same time everyday I could see progress, like taking less than 30 minutes to take all the pills 🙄 I had surgery in portugal, and I do not understand why there was no other for me to take my medicine, since I didn't feel my face and my throat was super swollen 😣 But oh well!

Hey girl I had maxillofacial surgery back in 2012 and I didn’t have any issues until 2018. I ended up having one of the titanium screws back out from the plate and cause an infection. So I had surgery to remove the one that was causing problems. However plus side if you do have the same thing happen to you many years down the line the pain is nothing compared to the jaw surgery :)

Your teeth will try to go back to their original position, so don’t ever stop wearing your retainers at night. I had braces 20 years ago and I still have to wear retainers every night. about the nose thing, I did double jaw surgery and it changed the structure of my face to the better, but I'm, since then (it has been 3 years), dying to do a nose job. I thought it was me wanting everything to look perfect since I finally got my jaw surgery, but now I realized it did change in shape and I don't like it nowadays. Also!, I just want to notice, for you and everyone, don't fall back to old habits. My doctor always says Teeth has memories of their own, and later on, they will start moving back to how they used to be, not 100% and not so quick, it would take like 10 years before you even notice they have moved already. so just don't fall into the old habits that made you reach this stage. Also if you have sinus problems, fix them NOW, because they WILL show up sooner or later. they did for me and I started to open my mouth again which is exactly why jaw moved into an open bite in the first place.

the metal thing behind your teeth is called retainer. It is placed inside your mouth because when your teeth were being moved they become very "flexible" so any, even the lightest pressure might put them out of place again. you will get used to that pretty quickly, the only thing you have to keep in mind is that normal floss doesn't work; you will either need one, that is very stiff or an interdentalbrush (idk if that's the corrcet term in english)
