Trains Fighting Gravity On Steep Grades! Trains With DPUs & A Train Goes Under Me While On A Bridge Maintained By Norfolk Southern. Caboose, Train Station And A Look At Main Line Rail. These 4 Trains Are In Elsmere And Erlanger, Kentucky On The Norfolk Southern Rat Hole Line. NS Recently Bought This 300+ Mile Line From Cincinnati.
I got 3 trains going up the hill and 1 train going down the hill. This is a steep grade that comes up out of the Ohio River Valley and peaks around the Erlanger, Kentucky area near Mile Post 10 on the NS Rat Hole Line. I spent a Saturday here trying to catch trains fighting gravity and I got lucky. As you will see I got a few of them going up the hill that has a maximum grade of 1.18% and I got one going down the hill. The intermodal train with double DPUs in the middle was my favorite. I wish the camera would pick up the awesome sounds of the locomotives earning their keep on this grade.
The spot where I am standing on the knoll filming the trains is just past the crest of the hill. Sometimes I catch trains here with manned helper units. Right after they pass the railroad crossing they will stop and cut off the manned pusher unit and then it returns back down the hill. I have several videos of that process if you are interested.
I also got a flag salute from a crew that had just crested the hill! That was really awesome. The area where I was at is near the Erlanger depot. I show the depot, the caboose and even film a train going behind the depot. You can also see the markings on the heavy welded rail when I zoom my camera in. Which train was your favourite? Do you like watching videos from here as much as I like filming them? I hope so because I really love visiting this area. There is a Frische's restaurant still open near here and I went there on this day. Don't forget the Live Action Pets and the slide show at the end of this video.
Filmed Saturday, January 25, 2025 in 1080p/4K with 60fps. Thanks for watching!
Please thumbs up and watch another JawTooth video to help my channel.

For Context it’s was really cool he got flagged but for reference it’s the conductor that flagged him and the conductor is on the right of the engine when your looking head on at it! If you’re looking from the back of the engine there on the left! I’m not tryna be mean or hateful just giving some knowledge out 😂

What's a red flag salute ?
@markuswx1322
@markuswx1322 7 күн бұрын
@@lynnmcculloch-m4h NS needs to clarify this. Red flags are warning devices used by railroads. They are not, or at least should not be used for casual greetings. The normal meaning would be to warn of unsafe conditions, such as an observer who is too close to the tracks or is on restricted property.

Awesome video! Thanks for the shout out, much appreciated. No definitely don't see that. I've seen snow flurries but that was back in 1989. I've seen ice on the roadway that same freeze. Seen ice on picnic benches when i camped one winter. Last week in Tallahassee they got 9 inches of snow! But that's around 100 miles north of me. I did get a frost last week. That intermodel was long! Loved it, the other one was good too. Erlanger is a good spot. Nice flag salute. Thanks for the video Brian stay well roll on and stay warm

9 inches of snow anywhere is a lot and especially in Tallahassee. A lot of records were set. Thanks for the Super Thanks! I'm getting ready for my trip back to Kenova tomorrow. Will probably also stop at Ashland, Ky on the way. I hope to get some coal trains. Thanks again Mark! Oh yeah, that intermodal with 2 DPUs was kind of unusual.

3257 on the UN placard is "Elevated temperature liquid, n.o.s., at or above 100 °C and below its flashpoint (including molten metals, molten salts, etc.)" All I can add to that is "n.o.s." is short for "not otherwise specified" so while it may be hot it is not toxic, corrosive, or flammable. I've never seen a conductor wave a flag before. Thanks so much once again, JT. The man to go to when you want to see some trains. Awesome!

This video is so much fun! I love depots. I've searched them out for years, wondering if I could film them. I love local historical stuff. Hadn't searched any yet. Just been to some. And only searched train sounds to sleep to. Then a couple of my friends that love trains- one of them really encouraged me to film them since I like them, too. I had no idea all of you all were out here doing this until a few months ago. It feels like everybody's chasing trains together. I love the documentation that I get to see of how different people enjoy enjoy life this way, and every train is technically different. I caught that operation lifesaver loco last week because I could hear the DPUs through the trees miles up the track and I was confused. Then I could hear them coming.... maybe a quarter of a mile down the way? I hyperfocused and I could see all of that mirage like hazy air around it coming toward us. Whoo-hoo! DPUs! Cool stuff!
@JawTooth
@JawTooth 7 күн бұрын
Pretty cool. I like all the old stuff that has to do with trains. Train stations and cabooses are some of my favorite stuff. I agree that it's nice sleeping to train sounds. Staying in motels by the tracks is really fun. I have literally been to dozens of them. Last week I stayed in one with a view of the trains in Ashland, Kentucky. I need to put that video together. In the summer I camped by the tracks which I have done a bunch of times. There are a lot of railfans throughout the world. It's a really fun hobby. Another fun thing is to look at the rail and see when it was rolled. The dates are on the side. I know of 4 places where the rail was rolled in the late 1890s and still in use. Tomorrow I am going back to Kenova West Virginia. Thanks for watching my videos and have a great week Dawn!

Yes, there are two of them not very far from Erlanger. I have been stopping at them since they announced shutting a bunch of them down. I lived only 15 miles from a Frisches' but they shut it down. That was a bummer because it was supposed to stay open. I remember dad taking us to Frisches when I was little. It is a special place

Man, you can really tell when most of the weight is over the crest of the grade 'cause they really start picking up speed. And my goodness, that IM was crazy long, and I figured it would be with 2 mid-train DPU's. Cool shot from the bridge. Thanks for another good one, JT.

Great video. My feet got cold thinking about being in that cold! If you ever railfan around Nashville, there is a town just north of the the city called GreenBrier. It is on CSX's Henderson sub. It is at the crest of the grade for trains coming out of the Cumberland River valley.I believe the grade crests in town at 1 percent. The Macdonalds parking lot is a great place to catch the action . Lots of intermodal action . You won't be disappointed.

@JawTooth if you listen on the camera microphone/speaker(usually one and the same) it's very difficult to hear them. Once I get home and get the video on my computer, then the sound clarity is much better, but out "in the field" as it is, and all the other outdoor sounds, a lot of the sounds are muted down by quite a bit when played back from the camera speaker, which, like stated earlier is usually also the microphone.

Wow, JT...did you catch that "Fallen Flag" covered hopper @3:59?? These green ex-C&NW cars show up everywhere...I see plenty here in Central Florida. On all of them, the unmistakable shape / profile of the C&NW herald remains, even though the lettering is long gone (painted-out or removed). The car you captured, however, is unique...re-applied C&NW reportng marks appear on a spray-painted white field, and -- best of all -- the iconic herald remains fully intact and visible!! How cool is that?? 😊

I film at Beechwood road a lot. The only thing is that a couple weeks ago they put in a mobile home right next to the crossing. Do you know anything about that? Right where they put it is where I used to park my truck. It sits right in the parking lot for the restaurant and businesses. Anyway, thanks for watching!
