I used to have piles and piles of stuff. Then things in my life changed. I lost my best friend, my parents, grandfather, my dog of 13 years. Became a victim of a violent attack and totally lost interest in stuff. I donated everything starting from clothes to shoes to furniture to books etc. The clothes I have now can fit into a medium sized moving box. My home doesn’t have much of decorations but only the essentials. I barely purchase anything for myself. Not because I am cheap but because I am simply not interested anymore.

Hi sweet Leyla. my real name is Leyla too. so i felt called to read your comment.. and it resonates with my path so much. i send you all my compassion. i had 8 losses in the same year.. ! and relatives too.. and some in traumatic situations..even if in all case, traumatic is a loss. and lived a lot of deep horribles situations too.. and so i felt to rebuilt myself starting by letting all go, and same.. starting with clothes, then books, decor etc. and same, now i do not buy a lot. i keep what i feel very useful and have not a lot in the tiny flat as i even sold furnitures. i feel more free to have less and to let go the past with it. and be more in living the present.. and feel not interested at all by having more too. just feeling better now that way. i have a tiny box for books and notebooks. and i tend to offer the books when read. just keeping few that i read many times. and clothes same. all fit in little box. our house might seem not to have a lot but for sure.. inside your heart is full.. and the lovely in you can shine now in that pure space. wishing you all the best for you now :) take care sweet heart ! if dark vibes came to our path, it is because your light is very bright for sure and now for sure you are stronger to keep up the lovely that you deserve in your life and strength to create it as you overcome all of this. sometimes i wonder.. why all this.. but then, i know that we can turn all in lesson, to stand up back and keep going. with no judgement of what one does or not. i know it is not easy at all. i even can not imagine as i did not live all of it. i wish you sincerely all the best !! 🙏🌟😘

I have a lot of stuff that has a purpose. My life is very fulfilled. Especially now that I am retired. I have a music room since I'm a concert violinist and have a concert almost every month with one orchestra and other performances with an Opera orchestra, then there's the 2 concerts a year with the chorus orchestra. I love to make beautiful music. My music room has shelves filled with music I love to play again and again. I also have an art studio with acrylic paints for my canvas pieces. I have one piece hanging on the wall at the top of bedroom stairs. I need my paint studio with easel for all paints. It's very organized. My guest bedroom is also my library. I have given away so many books deciding to only keep favorites that I want to loan out to family and friends. I have very comfortable seating in my library. I love to read.......but I have to paint and practice my violin. I have a couple of totes filled with gorgeous fabric to start another quilt. I have Hawaiian quilts hanging on the walls I made these quilts while living in Hawaii. I have 'Yankee' quilts also. I made one for each family member. So these hobbies take time to do them well. I will not show up at orchestra rehearsal not knowing the music. I want to make another painting. I don't have time for all I want to do but cannot give up any of them. Why should I? Is my house cluttered with stuff?? No It's not cluttered, it's very organized. I surround myself with stuff I love. Nothing is kept that doesn't bring me joy!

My husband and I, at 63 and 68 years old respectively, walked the 800km on the Camino de Santiago. For 38 days, all we owned was on our backs. I carried 6.5 kg and Ian carried 8.5k . When we returned we started our downsizing of so many years of hoarding. I had changed countries 15 years before so it was only 15 years of stuff. But my hoarding was as a result of growing up poor. Ian, his was just because he just hoarded, mostly tools, screws and small boxes. My son called us serial hoarders. Me, I said everything has a soul memory. It is 4 years now since we started. It was extremely difficult but we are getting much better now, mostly because we have realised that we are old. My motto: find a place for it to live where you can use it, or CHUCK. I had 53 pots and pans! I now have 32. Still too many. But I can’t help the palpitations and sweating every time I walk past a shop selling these items 😂 I will eventually get there.

Sentimental things are the hardest to get rid of. My dad bought me my first acoustic guitar when I was about 13 years old. I don't see my dad anymore. Last time I saw him was probably 10 years ago. One day my dog knocked over the guitar that my dad got me and broke the neck. I cried when it happened. I had the guitar for 20 years. I kept it in the garage hoping to fix it one day. One day it hit me, the guitar wasn't my dad. I kept it because of the memory of my dad. He is still around thankfully, but I just don't see him since my mom/dad divorced when I was little. I don't miss the guitar, but I miss my dads presence.

Hi Nick, thanks for leaving this note and sharing about your dad. That really resonates with me. I've had a very complicated relationship growing up with my folks, but i love them both so much - just that there's so many communications barriers esp w Asian parents you know? It doesn't help also that i'm a bit of a black sheep in my family. I have a lot of stuff connected with my mom and dad that i'm super tied to, but its a big step to recognize that the stuff isn't what we're attached to, but what the stuff represents. I hope you get a chance to spend more time w your dad too.

I sold the family house after my parents and brother died. Their lifelong stuff and my stuff too had to go because it was an expensive anchor retarding my move to Vietnam. I still eventually shipped too much across the Pacific, but zero regrets. I look back and it was such a relief to let go. I took photos of cabinets of mementos, shelves of books, digitized paintings and art with my iphone, as a way of preserving memories. And you know - almost everything is replaceable. I found it easier emotionally to clean out in phases, I did it over 2+ years. And it gets easier after you dump a bunch, and find out - That wasn't so bad! I also believe that it is ok to keep some things, no need being a militant minimalist whose possessions fit in a carryon bag.

My own life has been full of travel - forced travel and relocation in order to stay working. I've had a dictum - if the "stuff" that I own doesn't fit into my car, the triage begins and the "stuff" gets pared down until it does. No more storage lockers. And I found once I started that, the sense of liberation that you speak of took over. There is a joke in the US (not a very funny one, but ironic) that houses are essentially warehouses diguised as homes. And you are very correct in saying that paying for something doesn't stop once you've bought and paid for it. You become a servant to all that "stuff" and have to live your life in such a way (whether you enjoy that life or not) in order to support the maintenance of that "stuff". Once you begin to see it in that light, buying and owning all that "stuff" doesn't have so much appeal anymore...Great topic, Jean!... 🙂 ...PS - I suspect there are some Buddhist or Taoist roots in your philosophy... 😉

Hi Jean...I liked this very much. I am 76 this Christmas. Mmy lovely x-wife from Indonesia (after 24 years together) and a beautiful 24 year old daughter decided to divorce me. The toughest thing was not the "letting go of stuff"...in fact I gave it all... house, car and everything to her since I knew I could replace it by working if I wanted since I am an active, still very much business consultant. Your comments caused a "tear in my heart" for the memories of the loss but the joy comes from what you say we do when we move on and up in our lives, and about how we think of ourselves and still respect and love others! Bali was my first anniversary and we lived in Jakarta six years before having to leave Indo in 1997 due to the "Asian Economic Flue" which also affected Singapore. By the way I love Singapore, who wouldn't right and Crazy Rich Asians! I gave up my marriage I did not want to give up and everything I personally had a right to but chose to let her have it so I still have beautiful memories in my heart and every time I see my daughter I swell up with happiness and joy because she is forever in my heart. So, "thank you" and please "you and your husband" feel free to visit my website (www.the boss can. com) if you want and you can see my daughter under "Consultants" page on the site. I pray that you two will be forever happy and that if you have children be sure and share what you had as a child since it does seem like your parents were doing the best they could based on what they learned growing up, to give you a good upbringing. Thnk you again and God Bless you both! Wayango!

You have so much wisdom at yr age. I admire your courage to stand for what you believe and love to do. I'm in my mid 30s and I feel trapped in the corporate world because I have a mortgage and a baby not long ago. The more stress I am, the more I spend unnecessarily. I'm never materialistic but the stress just accumulates and spending is an outlet for me. Thanks for giving new perspective lens and validations in another. ❤

I have always been a huge earrings fan since my teenage years. Used to collect every pair I bought or was gifted. 4 years ago I began my minimalism journey and got rid of approx. 80% of them, keeping only those pairs which brought me joy. Recently, something happened to my ears (it seems I cannot wear anything that is not made of gold/steel/titanium) and was thus forced to give away 3 more pairs (that I loved but could not wear due to itchiness). Although at first I was quite upset because of my passion for earrings, later I felt surprisingly ok, knowing that what I now have I can actually enjoy. Minimalism brought to me a great, and unexpected, mind shift.

I have been in the process of getting rid of clothes that are not all that flattering on me, or are either too small. I have also been getting rid of a lot of handbags as well. It has been surprisingly easy for me because I know that sooner or later I will be moving and honestly I just want to have maybe 2-3 boxes of things sent to me once I get settled the rest can go in my suitcase and backpack. Plus I know how much stuff my mom has right now in her 3 bedroom 2 bath house that I will have to go through and deal with by myself sooner or later and I dont want to burden my daughter with a lot of my stuff later. I want it to be super easy for her to deal with my stuff in the future. Thanks for sharing your journey in getting rid of your things. There is no right or wrong answer when it comes to being a "minimalist" or getting rid or not get rid of possessions.

I have been in the process of decluttering for the past several years. I have gotten rid of a LOT of stuff, and still have a fair way to go. I have sold some, and received quite a bit of money, only a fraction of what I spent on it of course, but the extra funds have certainly come in handy. Much more has been given to friends, family and the thrift stores. It feels good to be lightening my load. Like you, I may never become the total minimalist I am striving to be, but I am very mindful of any new purchases, and I am slowly whittling away at my excess belongings, as I feel ready to give them up. Very liberating!

I am glad you found your happiness this way. I am glad your video is bringing joy to others. It is not the same for everyone, of course. I love doing what I studied and more on the side. I love wearing different things and have a nice style of my own. It is not to show off. I never buy brands, but whoever becomes happy by them should buy them. I like having a style. Life is short and we need to make the best out of it. So, everyone should get in on it as it pleases them. Having a lot of stuff is not a miserable thing all the time. People who are unhappy down on the inside try to bring a blame to something. It is either you don't have stuff, but oh, if you had a lot of stuff, it is all of a sudden having too much stuff. Happiness is neither in stuff whether it is the abundance or the lack of it.... Sad that it always comes to stuff... We are here to do the most with the life-time we are given here. Sad you couldn't find it in protecting people through law. Hope you are happy surfing and with whatever that brings to this life, other people and yourself.

👏BRAVO👏that you were able to gain this perspective while still young to get yourself out of the matrix...the matrix of work, work, work to earn, buy, earn, buy...and then we die. That realization came to me late in life, post cancer that has been a game-changer. It's forced me out of my career, still in transition before I find my way into a new way of living with my new norm since surgery. But I had this thought last week that'll help me in the areas I've been struggling to declutter to the point of minimalism, and that is to ask myself, "What does this item say about me? Is that the old me? Is this item going to take me where I need to go, or is it even needed or desired in this new life that'll make me happy?" Remembering Lot's wife, she was to leave her past and move forward into her future. The family was specifically told, "look not behind thee" (Gen 19:17), however one family member did look back and that was Lot's wife (verse 26). And because she did, there was no moving forward and no future. So there's something to be said that what served us yesterday, may not necessarily serve us today or where we're going tomorrow, in which case, we need to practice and get good at letting go. Thank you for sharing your story, Jean.😘

Love this video. Minimalism is the way. I got right into it 10 years ago and it changed a lot of things in my life, but consumerism creeps up on you very easily so it's always good to go through stuff (stocktake) every few months or so, and it always amazes me that I still have a bit of stuff no matter how conscious I am. The most liberating part about decluttering is the letting go of emotional attachment.
