One of the issues with this is Russell himself. EVERYBODY agrees that what Russell does is truly incredible. Like next level amazing that shouldn't be possible. It's extremely inspiring. However Russell just isn't a very good film subject much of the time. He doesn't seem to like being on camera, doesn't cooperate with the film crew, doesn't have much spare energy to think of anything to say other than talking about poo and the mental tricks and chants (1s and 2s, etc.). The film crew has complained about this several times(though it does sound like he's trying to improve). Once you get over the HOLY F*** HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE!! It's literally just watching him run and then shoot the shit with the guys. They really have to stretch sometimes to find content that is worthy of the final edit. All of this just to say that unless something interesting is happening (like, he's being held up by armed thieves), the episodes can be kinda boring and repetitive. Russell is more interested in running than filming, and that's fine, but it means that sometimes the films suffer for it. And let me be clear, I'm not saying Russell CAN'T carry the episode with just his personality alone, I'm saying that he often doesn't. I don't blame him either. Maybe he just doesn't have the energy left over to talk intelligently into the camera. If Russell was as obsessed with making good films as he was with running, the episodes would be better.

So if you're ever in Big Bend National Park and need to have a shit, you have to bury it at least 6 inches down. However, the soil is hard and rocky and you can't use a shovel. The trick is to find a large rock thats at least 6 inches below ground surface, roll it over, and shit in the void space. Replace the rock when done and you've buried it. This is a good trick for any desert environments. When in doubt, roll a rock.

I’m so thankful for this series. I’ve been nursing ankle and hamstring injuries since February, was trying to run my first marathon in April, and had a nasty slip on ice and my hamstring didn’t feel right for months, twisted each of my ankles in two separate instances while at work and while coaching my son’s teeball team, but this series has seriously helped me keep my mind focused on recovery and getting back on the road.
