Nose breathing was featured in a fantastic Disney movie called "Wild Hearts Can't Be Broken" that everyone here should TOTALLY watch. X) It's a method of creating trust with your horse and helps them get to know your scent and accept you into their "herd". Thank you SO MUCH for the laughs, Justine! Horses greet each other/acknowledge one another by breathing in each other’s nostrils. When they first meet this can be a bad thing as they can decide they don’t like each other- in many cases when you first introduce a new herd member, you will see a very tense exchange of blows, which can result in kicks and squeals or they can be totally cool with each other. Once they get to know each other, this is a sign of ‘hello, nice to see you!’, and the exchange will be very relaxed. However I have no idea what eye cupping is 😂

The nose breathing is because when horses meet they blow into another horses to get their scent. Eye cupping helps the horse relax, my horse loves it!

Nose breathing is an actual thing that horses do in the morning. They breath into eachother's nostrils to learn eachother's smells. If you do it with your horse it can be a bonding experience.

k so "nose breathing" is a thing I've heard people do to greet horses. I read that horses greet each other by breathing in each other's noses. so greeting your horse by that calms it.
