Hey Keltie, I'm a family physician/sport medicine physician in Ontario, and just wanted to say THANK YOU for a really grounded, reasonable take on "wellness" screening. Tech in medicine CAN be a great thing, but isn't a magical tool that can show you things that aren't there. I always dread when patients come in and ask me to test for "everything". It just isn't possible. For otherwise, young (and when I say young, I mean under 40!) people who feel well and aren't doing stupid things to themselves (no exercise, poor diet/lifestyle choices), paying for expensive screening tests for "everything" just isn't cost effective. I appreciate that you, an influencer, with a large audience is advocating this level headed approach. ♥

Thank you so much Frank 🥹 this means the absolute world to have a physicians stamp of approval! How you said it is so perfect! I feel blessed to have the opportunity to do all these, but also was it’s worth it, nope! Way better to do 1 test every once in a while and make small changes if needed, vs all at once was overwhelming hahhaha

Some people asking about pricing(in Canadian): Dexa - around $150 ish MRI - around $2000-3000 Blood work & other tests $40 to a couple hundred for every individual testing. I find typically a full blood panel testing is around $800 to $1500 Hormone testing there is SO MUCH variance in this one, but typically $500 to $2000 (unless just getting 1 or so things tested) This style testing really depends on the location you get it + if you decided to become a full time patient or just get the 1 type test. So going to cost around $2,000 to 10,000 to just get the 1x testing. Then to become a full time patient in one of these clinics will run you $20,000 to $100,000 a year! 🤯🫨 So this style testing really depends what you choose I pick!

Hmm super interesting, maybe unless you got a reason it's not worth to get all of them but things like blood work and hormone testing might be most useful to pinpoint what's wrong in dit and supplements you may be taking. Dexa scans are available in some good gyms I've found.

Hey. Very interesting topic Keltie. Medical doctor here and I’m afraid to say those tests are usually not worth it. Especially because they are super incomplete. For instance you mentioned you got a ‘full’ body scan. But you could have lung cancer without the MR detected it as so far only chest CT scans can detect them. So yes some tests should be available but always be targeted to specific population , for example people at risk of malnutrition or symptomatic (but then there are no longer screening tests but diagnostic tests ). Fascinating topic anyway, thanks for bringing it up and your input on it.

Girl, I’ve had the absolute worst month of my life suffering from headaches and I was convinced it was a tumour. I went and got an MRI and my brain is normal, there is no tumour but the neurologist also told me there are some abnormalities in my white matter but didn’t explain further, just said I’m healthy overall and to come back if the pain gets worse or persists. My mental health has still been quite bad cause I keep thinking there is something seriously wrong, and it was so so so helpful to hear you say that about the normal spot on your brain. I’ve been afraid to live lately because I’m afraid the headaches will come back and it was just like a hug from you to hear I’m not alone ❤

I absolutely love how you approach these health topics. You are so honest and always list pros and cons, and you have a realistic mindset, which is not usual for influencer/athletes these days. The world needs more people like you who have a healthy, balanced lifestyle but are honest. I live in the U.S, where insurance doesn't cover many necessary tests (whole different topic...), but there are also a lot of tests they don't cover, and I understand why, because there is not enough information on them yet and we don't know how reliable they are. Chiropractor offices are notorious for offering unproven testing around here. Medicine and testing has come a long way, but there are still limitations.

Would be interested to see you challenge yourself with quitting caffeine. I’ve stopped caffeine in jan this year as I was dealing with sooo many health issues related to a central sensitivity syndrome. No wonder why, caffeine promotes exactly THAT. Quitting caffeine changed my life, I got my health back, mental and physical. No platforms or studies are gonna support that because of funding bias. But as I looked into the science of STRESS it just made sense why coffee contributed to my health decline. I would love more people to try out a caffeine free life, and maybe your platform can reach many others to do so too. I’m a sports scientist and physiotherapist myself and encourage all my patients to try quitting it. So many have leveraged from that decision. Thanks for all the work you put in your videos ❤!

I think I speak for a lot of us hypochondriacs and the "just curious", this is such a refreshing and helpful take on this! I was surrounded as a kid by lots of conditions from my family (both hereditary and not) and I used to just DREAD hearing everything knowing that I could have those when I reached their age. To the point where at 17, I decided to try getting an "everything" test because I wanted to be ahead of it all and know where I'm at. I remember getting a combination of funny, impressed, and concerned looks from receptionists and doctors HAHA and after it, all I really got was "well you're fine just a little bit overweight is all." I still feel like I need to be vigilant with it because of family history but after watching this video I felt more assured that for the most part I'll probably be okay and I don't really need to know about everything yet. Thank you so much for continuing to deliver with the great content, Keltie!

I literally just saw a video from Dr. Mike last night about getting unnecessary tests, which he doesn’t recommend (as you realized! 😂). Personally, here in Argentina -if you have health insurance, it’s recommended to get an annual checkup (full blood, dentist and gyno and then go from there) and that’s how I discovered everything I needed to know and kept and eye on the regular stuff. So I’ve learned you don’t need anything else until you have a reason to. 😊

As someone who works in health care, I would love if this would be more available to us. However, SO many individuals do not put effort into their own health and do not try to prevent things and instead just want the “quick fix” of getting something treated (aka people with heart issues who continue to eat awful and stay sedentary) so we don’t put as much into preventative medicine.

I did some expensive medical tests last year because I was worried I had PCOS and was pre-diabetic, while my mom was convinced I had thyroid issues. At the end the results said that I was healthy, no hormonal issues, no nutritional deficencies, good cholesterol levels, good cardiovascular health. The only thing they flagged was my high BMI and body fat % and advised me to exercise more and reduce stress... As a very anxious person these results were a real relief, but also made the tests feel very pointless, so my experience was very similar to yours!

It's certainly interesting but I also don't think it's worth it if there is nothing in someones health that justifies it. I think talking to a physician and a nutritionist (the real ones) who actually listen to you and get the full picture of someones health is worth more. They will know what to check for and what tests are/might be worth it. The hard part is finding someone like that. One example for that is my broken heel. It was a bit of a problem since it didn't show up on xray at first but in MRI. However, after all of that I went to a different orthopedist for an issue on the same foot and the knee bc I worried it's caused from the formerly broken heel. He was actually listening and finding it very strange that it even broke like that in the first place. So he strongly recommended doing a test for bone density and bloodwork related to osteoporosis like Vit D, Calcium, parathyroid hormone etc. And would you know it, I'm heading to ostheoporosis. The hormones are through the roof and taking calcium out of my bones, while calcium levels are still way to low and the bone density is showing it too. Fortunately it can still be prevented and I'm working on that now. The broken heel was basically my warning, that other practitioners ignored. Had to pay for it myself in the german health care system, but it was my money well spent and I will get it checked again in 6 months. #TeamBoneDensity

As someone who has had blood tests every year since I was 14, I have to say that not all diseases can be prevented, which is really sad, because yes, if my cholesterol is a little high I know that I have to eat less mayonnaise and if I have a little anemea my doctor will prescribe me vitamins for a few months, but there are things that doctors don't see or don't care about or think it's something else, etc. For example, when I was 17 my doctor saw something and prescribed me to take iodine for 6 months, the next year everything was fine and then, at 19, it turned out that I had hypothyroidism and now I have to take medication. So there are things that can be prevented and things that cannot, there are diseases that appear in a matter of weeks or a couple of months and no one is going to do blood tests every month, not to mention the others tests that are more expensive.

My mom has been in heart failure since 2009 and my dad died of heart failure at 65 in 2017 and his death surprised his cardiologist. For both of them healthy looked different and what they needed was different, currently my mom is in treatment for lung cancer despite doing nothing to have "earned" lung cancer. Health can be wildly unpredictable for a variety of reasons. These tests are fascinating but they are probably a long ways off from being immediately beneficial, I'm still thankful you did this though Keltie

But he’s just been weight training three times a week since his 30s. He’s not fat, just fit. The general pop. research will take a few years to catch up with his kind of lifestyle.

I felt much like you over my DNA health results. Was a bit disappointed to be so average in so many dimensions. One way to get some of these tests at an earlier age is to volunteer for medical testing as a test subject. Years ago I got two dexa tests as a test subject in a weight loss study.

I think it is also super helpful for the average person to weigh the benefits of doing these advanced screening tests, versus paying money to implement the tried and tested lifestyle changes that we know work. Like for someone who isn’t regularly strength training spending the $$ it would cost to get an MRI and putting it towards a personal trainer would probably be more beneficial.

Agreed - I just got Good Energy by Dr. Casey Means and am trying to implement her strategies even more than I had been already (whole foods, exercise, sleep, outdoors, stress management, etc.). She talks about how the body is a process, not a thing, and how our cells completely regenerate over time so I think probably the best thing we can do is commit to healthy habits for the long run.

If you work out you can supplement electrolytes, be careful if you are not active because supplementing can be potentially dangerous, especially if you have particular conditions. Always consult your doctors before adding a supplement.

This was really cool, but it is important to know that EVERY test has a false positive rate. So when you're feeling sick, the risk of taking the test is worth it because something might actually be wrong because we can take information from a couple different sources and use that info to piece together the most likely cause of your illness. BUT if you aren't sick, you might get flagged for something you don't have, which causes stress and unnecessary medications/treatment.

As practicing physician/specialist I beg you (the people) to not get these tests. There’s approved screening tests for people as per their age and risk factors. Full body MRIs often reveal incidental findings that have very very serious consequences. You didn’t have a tumour but many people might or those spots you mentioned most doctors don’t read these MRIs esp in BC. Please visit your GP/family doctor regularly and follow regular health advice. Unfortunately the one thing that can produce most of the issues we’re trying to avoid with these tests is the one thing we can’t change, our genetics. Also please wash your vegetables and fruits!

As someone who does get tested regularly bc of hypothyroidism and endometriosis it is exhausting. Turns out my iron is incredibly low most likely bc my absorption just sucks. I also have some other issues but getting regularly checked can be of help! But am I going to privately get everything tested for $20k? Heck no! Lol 😆

Exactly, all these health and longevity efforts could essentially be upended by accidental death at any moment. Nice to have test results, especially if you've had misdiagnosis issues in the past, but for the average person, enjoy life while you can live it to the fullest. You can get burnout from too much of a good thing, balance is key.

I would say another underrated factor in this is gender. Modern western medicine has historically been the study of white men's health and not women's health. So a lot of these norms and symptoms and these health hacking trends often are all based on the european's male body. Men's health therefore has improved dramatically in the last 100 years but women's health hasn't followed the same trajectory. Women are often understudied and underrepresented in these findings today (Lack of presence in drug trials and tracking or in symptoms of disease like heart attacks). So I would be thoughtful in how you also follow some of these trends and recommendations because of it.

This kind of testing is cool if you have money to burn. But as you saw in your booklet, screenings will mostly be preceded by glaring symptoms and general doctors appointments where the doctor will recommend you get the blood work or mri if necessary. If you don’t exhibit any symptoms, then there’s usually nothing wrong. But these kinds of full examinations are indeed there for otherwise healthy folks that are bored and curious… And for hypochondriacs. In the far future, maybe we’ll have access to cheaper data so people can get these every year just to see their own stats. But at the moment, it’s still largely on a as needed basis. All we need as a society is deprivitization of healthcare in places like the US. Then we can all move forward. Past profits. Past a bottom line.
