Yes he is tired and new but his initial behavior to Coda is him being an instinctive Boerboel. Strong, bold, independent thinker, yet very teachable. I love him!

Was really expecting a Cane Corso or maybe an Anatolian Shepard instead of an English Mastiff when you said most protective dog in the world. Congratulations on the new puppy! Yes, I thought it was an English Mastiff instead of a Boreboel. The look so similar as puppies.

So stoked to see this! I'm welcoming a 2 y/o female Boerboel to the family in a few weeks. She's currently in foster with and being evaluated by a friend who's a breeder of Boerboels and he's really liking the way she's adjusting and showing protective (but not reactive) behavior. She's doing well around other dogs, doing well on leash, and doing well inside. She looks to have that slightly leaner build, which I prefer since she'll be a general farm / property guardian and a walking and hiking companion along with my younger Malinois x GSD pup. Tom is my absolute fave behaviorist and trainer, so really excited to follow this journey with him and his family!

I think it is important to point out why a martingale or flat collar setup is preferable to a harness for puppies. Many individuals tend to begin with harnesses and retractables for their puppies, but this can ultimately lead to failure and more effort with the dog in the future. I'm not suggesting that harnesses or retractables are terrible; there is simply a time and place for them.
@LabsandCClov265311 ай бұрын
Congrats on the Boerboel pup. Excited to follow along as he grows. I have never owed a protective breed until last year when I found a male Corso in the park. He has the greatest personality, gets along great with my two male Labs and loves every person he has encountered. It is facinating to watch the way he looks at people as if assessing friend or foe.

Thanks for this video. I got my first ever puppy last year (I've had dogs before but not that young) and I watched a lot of KZbin videos... Watching your video made me feel like I did the right thing. I'm looking forward to your videos.

Glad to stumble upon this video as we just adopted 2 pups (one is 10mo from a rescue, the other is 4 mo from a shelter) and want to do PROPER training for them! The 4mo old is a lab mix (we are thinking GSD) and is already showing a protective side which makes me so happy since we tragically lost our protector dog and my 4 year old's best friend in the world last June while we were on vacation. I love how you take the time to explain the reasoning behind what you are doing!

Amazing pup. Love this breed. I own cane corsos, and one thing I've learned with some of the large protective breeds is it takes patience and understanding. What I mean by understanding is how your actions and attitude are being relieved by the dog. They can and will get their feelings hurt and or develop mistrust much more easily than a normal everyday dog. But the reward you get for all your work is tney will protect you with their life and not think twice about it

I wish there were more trainers around like Tom. I love watching him as he deals with people and dogs. I’m an aspiring trainer who would do anything for a chance to learn from him. I’ve met so many trainers who just don’t seem to have the passion Tom has for both dogs and people. I hope someday someone like him will teach me so I can become the best trainer that I can.

CONGRATS, Tom, so happy for you! Having a Mastiff of the guardian kind in the home sure is a huge comfort... Couldn't imagine life without a natural guardian breed dog (Estrela Mountain Dog in my case), especially with family in need of protecting (no kids here, but a pair of Beagles, and hunting dog theft being a major problem here in Portugal - with dogs getting stolen, abused, and then sometimes turning up discarded on the streets many years later, sometime mutilated and injured, so it's a complete nightmare for owners to have this happen).

This is sooo exiting, greatest thing on youtube since Will Atherton was raising his Corso, real life lessons, thank you so much for taking us with you on this journey, subscribed just for this, to follow you along the way, I'm sure many people gonna really benefit from this. And congrats with your new bundle of joy (and stress and sleepless nights 😂), seeing it brings all those memories - the cuteness but such a hard work that is totally worth it, all you put in such a pup will come back x10. I noticed that many people have quite different experiences with Boerboels, they all have something very individual but like one owner once said - they all need love, guidance and discipline in equal measures. Once you have your heart stolen by a Boerboel and create that bond -it's something else. But the knowledge and talent to handle those dogs is a must. It's great you can show how it's done, too many people do it wrong without realising it and when Boerboel turns 18 months or so becomes unhandleable (the so called typical switch). Can't wait for the next video, seeing it how you do it 👍

I'm super stoked to see you raise this pup. I have a 16 month, 180 pound male who still has some growing to do. My greatest delight has been to shatter the stereotyping that Boerboels have received because of poorly trained owners. He's great with children, other dogs and other animals. As far as his protective drive goes; if I'm okay with people then he's OK with them. Now in the more challenging "teenage" phase, it's like trying to get a headstrong 4 year old to follow instructions. (He does, but sometimes in his own time.) Let me know if you are in South Africa as I'd love to meet you.
