The T1 has always been one of my favorite streamlined steamers. Excellent find! There is a group of people that are currently building, from almost complete scratch, a new T1 locomotive. I've been following them for some time now. It's too bad that the T1's weren't more successful, operationally. Also a fan of Trainz. I've purchased from them quite a few times.

An absolute behemoth of a locomotive, Pennsy in their heyday loved coming up with the craziest ideas in railroading. I hope the effort to bring 5550 to life succeeds, and Lionel commemorates them with another run of these. I like to see the Pennsy and NYC rivalry as bringing out the absolute best in both of them, as it was directly because of their fierce competition that both roads produced such beautiful and innovative designs as the Dreyfuss and Commodore Hudsons, GG1, S2 Turbine, and of course the T1 duplex.

Is it just me or are the tenders of both of these engines just as awesome as the locomotive itself? Great video Chris!

What a beautiful locomotive. I have imagined what a sight they were racing along, especially across the flat areas of the PRR in Ohio and Indiana. According to the book, "The Pennsy in the Steel City" by Ken Kobus and Jack Consoli, many of the T1s, including the two prototypes, were scrapped at Azcon in Sharpsburg, PA, just outside of Pittsburgh, and a 5 minute drive from my home. I sometimes picture them sitting at the scrapyard as I drive by.

Really cool find, great engine for something built 23 years ago! The T1 won that whistle battle easily. I have been toying around with getting one of those lionmaster T1s, I might need to pull the trigger after seeing how nice that engine looks on your layout.

Nice model and a fine locomotive. They were incredibly fast. The designer of the valve gear, Franklin, covertly rode the trains to try to find out why there were some failing valve gear. They clocked the trains many times exceeding 130 mph, which was a bit faster than they were supposed to run and determined that the valve gear could fail at over 130 mph. They and the S1 were much faster than the record-setting Mallard, but no official timed runs were taken. When the T1 Trust gets the new engine operational, maybe they will get to test it and beat the Mallard's record. I'd love to have that older Lionel model pulling my AMT passenger cars. Excellent video, as always. I look forward to the next one.

Thanks for this review of the Lionel T1 streamlined steamer, Chris. Since the T1 was introduced in 1942 (my birth year!), I will choose the whistle of the T1. I always liked the sound of a steam engine whistle, and as you can see, the diesel horn was a late comer to my experience of locomotives. The T1 is a very good looking locomotive, both the model and the prototype. I hope the T1 Trust project is experiencing success in their restoration. It's a very brave effort and I wish them success.

Impressive steam show! The T1 has the most realistic whistle sound. Plus it just looks and sounds so good at full throttle steaming around your layout. Hope your bridges can stand all of the good vibra-a-a-tions generated from this heavy weight.😂

Pennsy was using horns on many of their steam locomotives. They actually have a better range and are more directional, so they can be heard more clearly by people in cars and the like. I believe that it became more commonplace on many late-model steam locomotives.

Thanks for another great video. You put the perfect string of passenger cars behind your T1 making it even more impressive. I also found your measurement of ~31" interesting. That is what determined the length of my turntable and both of my T1's just barely fit. Also, thanks for calling attention to the T1 Trust. They've come a long way but they have a long way to go. The PRR built 50 production T1's, the last being number 5549. So the 5550 is not a restoration (the PRR scrapped them all) but rather the next number in the production line. Some day, a T1 will be running again (although it is great seeing the scale model running on your layout).

Great find Chris, be aware of The wide driver wheels , they will short out on some switches. A mistake by Lionel when they were built. Btw I also asked Trainz at York about about a set of F units they may have at their store. They said they may. And after some searching they found it and it will be in my hands sometime early next week. It was a engine set I had before 20 years ago and it was one of the first scale detailed F units with tmcc, Odyssey. They were great. Thanks for the discount, 🤑

There was an article posted by the T1 trust which was a recording of time between two switch towers that were some miles away from eachother (I don't remember how many) and they took the time and miles this T1 was going between the two towers and summed up that the locomotive had to have gone at least 146mph at some points on the line between the two towers. That's 20 mph more than the Mallards standing record of 126 mph! Pretty impressive

Chris - your T1 just needs a smoke unit rebuild and it will almost pour it out like Legacy, without the synchronization (although there's a way to sync it to the chuff without all the 3rd party add-on boards). Lionel did not have the technique down back then and almost every TMCC steamer from 1999-2005 had relatively puny smoke output. Get in touch if you want it enhanced. People bring these to my shop all the time for super smoke enhancements.

When 5550 is finished, I wonder if Lionel or MTH will make a model of it? When 4014 was restored a special model representing its modern day appearance with specific sound effects and crew talk that was different from the version of 4014 that represented it’s original service career was released. I also know that in great Britain, when tornado was finished, they made a special model representing tornado along with models of the original members of the A1 peppercorn class. I bet you that if a model is made of 5550 then the biggest difference is will be that the tender will probably be covered since it’s going to be an oil burner and they will probably be special sound effect of dialogue of whatever special occasion occurs to celebrate the completion of the locomotive. A similar thing was done with the sound effects with one of the restoration series models of 4014 since it had a recording of the dedication of the 150th anniversary of the golden spike ceremony in 2019.

Great aquisition Chris! The T1's a classic and a great "Might have been." What a shame none were preserved. Oh, the whistle battle? The T1's the winner! The S1 doesn't have a whistle, it has a HORN. A HORN for cryin' out loud! A horn on a steam engine is an affront to nature! Oh, and the T1's were equipped with the PRR's unique train radiotelephone system so cab talk is OK on that model. A fun video as always! Thanks!

Many late era large steam locomotives had air horns.
@wayneantoniazzi2706
@wayneantoniazzi2706 Жыл бұрын
@@markkilgore938 Quite true, the Southern Pacific's GS Class, the Lackawanna's Pocono Class 4-8-4's and the NYC's Niagaras had air horns. BUT that doesn't make it right! Seriously though, there are advantages to an air horn. Horns are mono-directional, that is their sound goes straight ahead from the direction the horn's pointing while a whistle is omni-directional, that means the sound goes in a 360 degree radius from the source. Horns were good for giving warnings in foggy conditions, there was NO doubt as to where it was coming from. All that being said the GS, Pocono, and Niagara locomotives still had whistles on them.

The air horn is best left to the SP cab forward. The steam whistle on the duplex sounds more like a steam ship. I think you need a Lionchief F unit and compare that to the Menards F unit . Which horn will sound better? For my layout I will save up for a lionmaster T1. I have a PS 3 Railking Santa Fe northern. In the o gauge train world a Pennsylvanian can run on the same rails as Santa Fe. I do appreciate the videos you put out it is the only way I will full scale steam locomotives run.
