Ha! Finally someone who speaks in a relaxed (and relaxing) way, not in that artificially excited way like 99% of all people on YT these days. It is a pleasure to listen to it. Thank you. He's Danish, which is why he speaks with such a nice and calm tone, instead of the typical over-sensationalized way. ;) Danish people in general sound so smooth to listen to (almost a bit mysterious), I'm saying that as a swede. I love how Danish people talk.

Totally agree, I found Palle yesterday when watching reviews for a new hybrid camera for travel and it's between this and the XT3, obviously this may win with the IBIS and also the larger files and bitrates of the XT3 would be of no use to me when editing and uploading on the fly. But yes, all of the reviews feel so similar, like they're scripted and it really is hard to review a camera after a few days/week of rental. It's clear Palle really knows his stuff and has REALLY used this camera! Really informative reviews full of great tips!

Great review, as usual, man. I've always loved your calm yet subtly funny style of vlogging and cameras review. It's such a welcome change from the tyranny of the hyperactive-overfriendly-ADHD-Larger than life style vlogging that you can see all over KZbin. I've been waiting for this one to come out to weigh in if I should get an X-T2 (that I wanted to get ever since it came out 2 years ago, but never had the budget to, up until very recently), or wait out for this one. Seems like the answer is getting clear, now. This looks like the one Fujiring to rule them all. Thanks for the thorough review (btw, your shots in Nepal are gorgeous !)

Shooting film in the past was about wrangling the tool to capture a protean version of what I visualised in my minds eye. The controls were a second nature response to what I was seeing and how I wanted to compose, light and capture my concept. 36 frames was not a limitation it was just a call for quality control. The Fujifilm feels more like a tool in that older paradigm than most cameras made today. Digital cameras are ultimately very point and shoot. Image making currently has a disconnect created by mysterious algorithms and intangible menus, screens and lists the technical overshadowing the creative. I can see you enjoying possibilities to fulfil your need to record what you are visualising and having an intuitive dialogue with the camera to create great images. The Fujifilm zeitgeist is partly in using old school forms and ergonomics applied to recording heartfelt images. It seems to be on your side as you make your decisions rather than forcing you to work out how to make it do what you want. It feels like a creative experience where the tool doesn’t get in the way or compromise your ideas. You seem liberated by the camera and that’s inspiring.

As much as I'd like to see more content from you I think the experiences you have in the real world and the 'real work' you do gets injected into these videos and lends some significance. I love how you deal with negativity too - you are my spirit animal. If I was half as angry and twice the photographer I'd be a happy man! I recently returned from a trip to Northern India (so kind of close to Nepal) and concur with the state of the roads and how amazing the people are. I took my Xpro2 into a waterfall and it survived and gave some cool images.

I think your geek videos are top notch and underviewed. You clearly have uncommon insight in this realm. I got patreon and it has made KZbin sustainable for me. Just do it. There is no good reason not too. It takes too long to achieve significant revenue on KZbin ads and unless you push product really hard, which will just make you a huge douche bag, or work hard on a back end money making scheme of some kind, there are not a lot of options to produce good content sustainably. I'm really excited about this camera, even if I don't get this version, I want Fuji to save me from Sony's douchebaggery and Panasonic's tiny sensors. I got rid of the xt2 immediately, largely because of the lack of an indicator light on the front and no record start or stop sound and no forward facing screen. One day I recorded for 30 minutes and the camera wasn't running, SO THANK YOU FOR PUSHING THEM ON THAT! Really, good job. I seriously wish this had a forward facing screen though. the Panasonic articulating screens work great for me. Moving all over the place, setting up different shots, with changing outdoor light, it's really a detriment to be without a forward facing screen. Why they are not on all video tending cameras by now is beyond me, considering the rapidly growing market of amateur video makers and the fact that so many people look to KZbin reviews for buying info. KZbinrs are continually pointing out that deficiency. I'd also like to see them eventually have really good in body 5 axis, so I can use all my manual primes. Seems like too much to ask now, but something to look forward to. Good luck with your channel. Your quality is top notch, you have unique insight and an engaging and authentic style and personality. There is a lot of competition in the field, but a lot of it is not that great, or clearly made out of profit motive over love and enthusiasm. In solidarity :)

Always love your videos and your common sense, no nonsense approach to everything. I have always been a still shooter and know virtually nothing of videography. I have had two xt2's for twelve months and haven't recorded one minute of video. This new camera looks fantastic and I have been thinking of learning to use the video features to make the wedding side of my photography more attractive. Having said all of that, I wish you would do more videos and because you are so good at it, it would be great if you did create some instructional videos for budding videographers, and the more advanced. I had planned upgrading from my XT-1 to an XT-2 this year - I’ve had the XT-1 about 2 years and it’s served me very well. I’m very impressed with what I read and review about the XH-1 and the larger size doesn’t bother me - so I think I’ll pass on the XT-2 and invest in the XH-1 / problem is the XH-2/3/4 will no doubt have more bells and whistles - I am not bothered about that - I generally keep cameras and get full value from them - I’ll keep my XT-1 which is a fantastic camera. Good review here and thanks for posting

I read that if you use the XF 18-55 then the X-H1 uses OIS + 3 axis IBIS. Do you think that's more stable than the XF 16-55 + 5 axis?
@PalleSchultz6 жыл бұрын
It is true that the 18-55 uses its OIS along with the remaining 3 axis stabilisation in camera. I think both lenses work really well with video, where the 16-55 is superior in the photo department. They are both great for video. I haven't felt a big difference. But the bigger 16-55 wins stability because of its weight and the 18-55 because of the very effective OIS. So in my mind it is a draw between the two.

Palle, thank you for this awesome "preview" of the upcoming Fuji XH-1. As an X-Pro2 stills shooter only, since I understand that this XH-1 has the same sensor and engine as both the XT-2 and X-Pro2, and is quite obviously a "video-centric" body, I believe that I shall wait patiently for an XT-3, with a new sensor and engine, and more geared for still capture. That said, you've certainly highlighted the capabilities of this camera, and I expect many videographers will gravitate to it, and possibly those new Fujinon Cine lenses. Out of curiosity, do you know why those Cine lenses are so much more expensive than the Fujinon XF lenses? Surely their optics cannot be so much better than the stellar Fujinon XF glass? (Pardon my ignorance, as I know nothing about video or its requirements!) Thanks again sir.
@PalleSchultz6 жыл бұрын
Hi Steve. I'm glad that my video makes you able to make a decision that is right for you. The reason why the Fujinon cinelenses are so expensive are due to their quality and construction. The focusing doesn't just move one glass, but a whole section, same with zoom. That is why it is a bit long and why the precision of the lens needs to be perfect, along with the glass. The lenses are incredible sharp but are actually quite cheap compared to Fujinons cinelenses in general. The big ones costs a house and a car ;)

Hi Palle, really nice to see a well laid out review from someone who has used the camera on real productions and not just on a one day fuji sponsored event with models and prelit. Your insights nicely cut away the marketing bs and highlighted the features that matter in the field. I was a bit worried about the 420 colors internally. When you referred to the footage as without steps in the gradient was that only on the external or also on internal recording?
@PalleSchultz6 жыл бұрын
Hi Klaus Both - it is 422 via HDMI and 420 to card but the internal recording shows no signs of banding. It is very clean. After transcoding to 422 in post, you can tweak it quite a lot.

Thanks for the informative review. Finally a review about a camera that talks about how the camera can be used and for what and not only a camera 1's specs vs camera 2's specs. Just a couple of questions: 1) How did you find the new grip? Did you use the camera with gloves? 2) Considering the high bitrate, what did you use for recording video? An external recorder or internally to SD cards? What SD cards did you use?
@PalleSchultz6 жыл бұрын
HI Allesandro I think the grip will comfort a lot of people. I think it is fine although I've never had much need for it. I do though, balance the bigger lenses better. I used the SD card it is 420 8bit to card at 200mbs and 422 to external recorder. I have some very expensive Sony SD cards at 128GB and 300Mbps, but you can easily record with slower cards.

This is the most comprehensive preview I saw so far. The "softness" of the shutter button for me isn't a very good news. It reminds me of Sony's shutter buttons, that are completely without any sort of "tactile response" in the "middle" focusing position. On my X100F I have a fantastic tactile feedback that tells me I'm focusing. On the A7RII I often shoot pics unintentionally because you can't tell at what point is the focusing position. Now that the X-H1 is out, is there any chance to see an X-T3 with IBIS?
@PalleSchultz6 жыл бұрын
It is true what you say. But you very quickly get used to it. It's very much a matter of preference. I honestly know nothing about anything regarding an X-T3. I guess the rumour sites will be a better source of info on that one.

I have few questions. One is continues autofocus performance in the video mode. Would love to see some realistically hard tests. And how does it handle autofocus in video and photo in low light. I have also a question about size of the camera. Seems to be camera with quite a few strong points. Excellent video and lighting BTW. My only question is the size of the camera, especially with the battery grip. It feels quite large for a mirrorless APS-C sensor. Considerately so, actually. DSLR size. Off course, there are many benefits to large body. Easier to get better in body image stabilization. Overheating is easier to solve, and for some people its easier to hold, with also more space for extra buttons and dials. The downside is off course the sheer size. No doubt the camera will be compared to Sony a6500 which has similar sensor and some of the features but its a bit older and more prosumer oriented than Fuji X-H1 perhaps. But its considerably smaller in size, which is a big benefit if you want to stay inconspicuous. And takes up less space in the bag as well. I am sure some people will take that as consdiration. You didn't mentioned it in this context or perhaps I missed it, but do you consider increase in size of X-H1 a weakness compared to competition?

Thanks for the video, as a raving X-T2 user I'm going to be upgrading to this because that IBIS is too good to be true for the 16-55 2.8 which I use nearly full-time. Do you have a B&H affiliate link? I want to pre-order the X-H1 but I'd like to buy it from the recommendation of someone such as yourself, as this video was very insightful. Let me know, I'll hold off pre-ordering for now just in case. If you don't have affiliation, maybe you should look into it! --- (that said I have no idea what's involved to do so hahah)

Love the video Palle, very informative! I'd like to know... I mainly take still photos, landscapes and portraits, I don't do any videos. I don't have a Fujifilm APS-C camera, but I am looking to buy one. For my case, would you recommend the X-T2 or X-H1 or should I just wait for the X-T3 which is rumoured to be released Oct/Nov 2018? The X-H1 sounds awesome, I love it for the higher res EVF, Bluetooth, touch screen and the ergonomics over the X-T2. I don't care for the top e-ink screen as I have a GFX and I hardly ever look at the e-ink screen (its nice to have but to me, it is kinda useless), and I don't care for IBIS, I am confident of my stability.

If video or IBIS is none of your concern. I would look into the other stuff that might be the difference about T2 and H1. Grip, bluetooth, touch screen, shutter release and so forth. You can turn of IBIS. The H1 is a tad larger than the T2, so that might also be a thing to consider. The H1 has really grown on me, so I use it for everything.

Thanks Palle! That was really quick reply! I will seriously consider your opinions, I am very leaning towards the X-H1 at the moment. Size is not a problem for me, considering all of my cameras in the past and present are/were bulky and I'm very used to the weight, so either X-T2 or X-H1 is considered compact and light for me. This is also one of the reasons I'm getting a Fujifilm X --- so that I have something light to use while travelling with my wife and kid. Again, thank you so much for your opinions!!! Looking forward to see more of your videos!

Hi Palle, I just wanted to say this was a fantastic review. Very thorough and great points. After four years of heavy use I am about to retire my Canon 5D Mk III and transition to mirrorless. I use an X100T as my travel/doc camera and love the Fuji colour space and film simulation. Until hearing about the XH1 today, I was about to pull the trigger on a Sony A7R III or A9 because I felt that the lack of IBIS and other features in the XT2 just didn't fit my needs. I am starting to think that the XH1 would fit all of my needs for stills and video. Just trying to get over the Fullframe to APSC stigma. Do you think I would regret switching from my full-frame to this crop sensor? Thanks!
@PalleSchultz6 жыл бұрын
I really depends on how you like your lenses and stills. For me the APSC Fujis is a great compromise in size and quality from FF. Because the lenses don't get as big as on the FF. Even the A7's have quite big lenses. So size is a major thing. Also the prices of the Fujinon lenses are very competitive, considering the IQ. In video it doesn't matter at all. Only the stills. If you love your X100, I see no reason why you wouldn't appreciate the X-H1
@KitLaughlin6 жыл бұрын
Full-frame is not necessarily an advantage for video, IMHO. Also, the APS-C sensor is close to Super 35 film size (see here: www.cinematography.com/index.php?s=f947da1bf7f2a80cfcfabb541358bca2&showtopic=59423#entry385896). I use µ4/3rds for all my video products and people love the quality, and APS-C is a step up from that. This (the X-H1) might be the first true all-rounder.

Great review! I really enjoy your videos and would definitely support you on Patreon. One question not specifically related to the XH1, but what brand is the rubber lens hood? Is it just a generic one?
@PalleSchultz6 жыл бұрын
This one is a Genustech. But there are a lot of different ones that I think is just as good.

Hi Palle, how does IBIS work for photos? With which shutter speed can I shoot a portrait? Has the Eye AF become faster and more accurate than the XT-2? Greetings from Cologne, Sven.
@PalleSchultz6 жыл бұрын
As moo says, your subjects will still move, and to freeze a subject that doesn't move much, would be 1/125 for me and 1/400 for moving subjects. But if there is no light or you need motion blur, you can go way down in shutterspeed handheld. It is really impressive and I can get a useable shot down to 1/8 with 35mm

Hi Palle, Nice review. Would you prefer the X-H1 over the X-Pro2 for stills?
@PalleSchultz6 жыл бұрын
That is a hard question, because the X-Pro2 is such a wonderful camera. For pro work I would go for the X-H1, for vacation, fun and zen like attitude: X-Pro2

Hi Palle, great video! Thank you for that. I am going to buy the X-H1 but am torn between lenses (16-55 or 18-55). What do you think I should go for? Also what kind of SD cards do you need for this camera?
@PalleSchultz6 жыл бұрын
That depends on what you want. The 16-55 is a high quality lens, but it doesn't have ois. But it has 2.8 all the way, so you can zoom without concern, when filming. The 18-55 is hands down the best kit lens ever... The OIS is incredible, the performance is way above expectation but it has 2.8 - 4 so you have to set it at f/4 if you want to zoom, to avoid exposure jumps. As an allrounder for travel video and photo, the 18-55 is great, for next level pro stills and video, 16-55.

Thanks for the clarification, Palle! Ordered my X-H1 yesterday with the 18-55 :D

Hello dear Palle, my question is how good is the AF in general and in video mode? Will it track better than the xt2? and how good is it compared to Canon or sony if you have played with those brands? Thank you and your video is awesome

I recorded with the Eterna film profile and did a little grading in post, to shift the blues to a bit more cyan color and pulled up a bit of contrast, all done with the color tools in Final Cut pro
