A F40 is something every detailer dreams of working on at some point in their career. It’s taken 16 years to have that dream come true for me. However, it’s not just a matter of time. It’s a mix of consistent hard work, along with meeting/partnering with the right people and getting in front of the right clients and gaining their trust.
Knowing the F40 can have very thin paint, I took great precaution in finding a pad and polish combination that would cut well enough to make a difference, while also not cutting too aggressively. Fortunately, the paint was playing very nicely for me and allowed me to get the results I was looking for (actually way better than I expected) in just a single polishing step. This meant less polishing in the car and preserving the paint as much as possible. You don’t get too many shots at this before you begin burning through.
Once the paint was to a point I was happy with, I applied Gtechniq EXOv5 to increase the gloss even further and add a long term protection that is slick and will make the car easy to maintain going forward. The door jambs were also given this same treatment (not seen in video). This whole process took approximately 40 hours.
Once the paint work was complete, I turned my focus to the Lexan. The Lexan on this car was a major eyesore. It was very foggy and covered in scratches, likely from constant dry wiping over the years. Lexan is material that I knew could be polished and corrected, but I’ve had no experience with it. After calling on a few colleagues, I came up with a plan of attack. After trying various methods, I finally found something that was working for me. Unfortunately, I didn’t have the ability to remove the hatch from the car, so it was going to be a very tedious work in some very awkward positions. All in all, it took me another 12 hours of polishing between the top surface and bottom. Both required the same amount of work to get the desired results. In the end, it was all worth the effort. This has been one of the bigger challenges I have faced in recent years and the payoff was outstanding.
From the beginning the completion date was always to display the car along with the owners other Ferraris at our largest Cars and Coffee of the year, the Toys For Tots event at Armature Works in Tampa, FL. As we got closer, the owner extended the offer to drive the car from our shop down to this event (about a 15 minute drive) and I of course couldn’t turn down a once in a lifetime opportunity to drive such an iconic machine that we all have dreamt of since childhood! The rest of this video documented that and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!
Thanks to our partners at Auto Paint Guard and Gtechniq for always supporting us! Also a huge thank you to the owner of the vehicle for giving me this amazing opportunity that myself and my team will never forget!
