Story of my life... :/ I received those kinds of comments every single time I'm in a group chat. I don't speak unless spoken to, and I also don't find it necessary to blatantly blurt out ideas or topics that comes on my mind. And it's not that I'm afraid of what people are going to think about what I'm saying, it's just that I tend to prioritise the things I actually want to talk about. You can say that I'm always in deep contemplations. When I find that the subject is not important enough to speak upon, then I simply swipe that out from my list of topics. I can be very pessimistic as well so that may also be the case... XD

As an introvert, I have learned how to act like an extrovert if needed: leading meetings, calming down real extroverts, etc. We can learn how to mimic an extrovert, but they can never mimic us. As a teacher and certifying instructors, extroverts can actually scare introverted students of any age. But introverts can modify their behaviors to work with most any student.

I too learned to act like an introvert to finish grad school but as soon as I was no longer in that environment I soon reverted to being an introvert. Acting like an extrovert is exhausting so is trying to explain being an introvert. Most extroverts largely don't seem to want to understand and are not interested in our 'suitcase'. Being an introvert has a genetic basis so it is difficult to turn that switch off. Great Ted talk.

A common misconception is that “introvert” means “doesn’t like speaking to large groups of people.” That isn’t precisely true. Introverts don’t derive energy from large groups of people. They are recharged by alone time or small groups of close friends, but I know many introverts who love public speaking (myself included) and many extroverts who are terrified by it. I just need time to recharge afterward, where the extrovert is running to the meet-and-greet 😂

@Chubbachuubs I believe "boring" is the wrong word. I believe people mean to say it's "uncomfortable" being around an introvert. I have a niece that's an introvert, who yerns for new friends. I believe Introverts MUST learn to adjust to having conversations if they yern for friends. If they don't care to make friends, then that's a different story. But, to suggest that it's okay to be quiet and either have the other person do all the talking or expect them to be quiet as well, is just not fair. It's kind of a catch-22. My niece now has a boyfriend, and went on a double-date with her male couson and his girlfriend. Her mom and I suggestested that she NOT just sit quietly in a corner and open up a little. She took our advice and had a WONDERFUL time. Her male-cousin was soooo amazed and happy that she was able to join in with the fun (just for the moment). There is a time to be quiet and then there are also times when introverts must open up just a little bit. I want to add that I am an extrovert, who wishes to be an ambivert, which is a balance between the two. I can see how it's just as difficult being either intoverted or extroverted. One talks too little and the other talks too much. Balance is what's necessary. #JustMyOpinion

time less some people ask that question politely, and i made friends before just because someone asked me why i am myself instead of assuming the reason for my silence. many times it just comes off as rude, especially when someone says it loudly so everyone in the room hears and if you don’t answer they just keep going. that’s different than someone who actually wants to befriend you or at least have a polite conversation with you.

I am not sure if it's only me but in a group discussion or meetings, I felt like I always need more time to think before I can ask question or provide a suggestions. I hate it when they do break out rooms where you don't have a choice but to participate. However, there is kind of an unspoken expectation that each should be able to speak up and just spontaneously provide feedback or comments or suggestions. So at the end, I'm forced to provide a rushed ideas that sometimes not a very good one. So most of the time I've beat myself for thinking so slow, for not contributing. In a corporate race of being the best, those the loudest and fastest are seen to be capable and able to lead.

It has left me feeling stupid, out of step and not enjoying social groups. It feels good to know that others feel the same. I’m a sociable person, and was brought up in a house of loudest & most dominant being ‘best’ which has taken its toll and taken along time for me to rebalance & accept myself. I was always the bookish one who didn’t want to join in… when actually I did like joining in but not in such a robust & insensitive manner. Then around a two years ago I started realising that I was actually pretty smart. Then I started answering more questions, and people started to see that I was almost two times smarter than them. Sure they had comprehension over other things but in what they called me stupid in, I beat them at. Honestly, it's so true. It's not even just group work, it's also giving a student a grade based on participation. I came to class every day, did all my work on time, took active notes through every class, and yet I would be penalised for not raising my hand regularly. It wasn't even until college that I got up the nerve to raise my hand and join in during discussion. Just because a student isn't raising their hand and letting their voices be heard that doesn't mean that they aren't engaged and present.

My 'mark' in the behaviour section of that class was LOWERED because of this. What I found pretty ironic was that she then proceeded to say that I achieved outstanding results in the academic side of things. She also mentioned that 'Ela's collaborative task proved she is able to communicate/collaborate', as if I had some kind of mental issue that I needed assistance with. Overall, she basically said I was a troubled student.

That is exactly what I felt too! When I wanted to tell someone something I used to always ask myself "what if I say things in a way that could be ever so slightly awkward?" and that made it worse because I was paying too much atention on how I was saying things and what pauses i was doing while speaking. I saw myself as the unsocial kid that does not talk often. At the time this also made me feel like I was different in a bad way. But thankfully we both have learned to accept ourselves as we are and not care too much. I am happy to be an introvert today. For example I sometimes find myself sitting on the chair in our bathroom and brushing my teeth and i forgot how I walked from the washbasin to the chair. Then realize out I had just been in my thoughts for a few minutes. Looking back at it then I kind of find it funny in a that I just sat without really realizing. I think it is because it makes me happy that I am able to spend time just letting my thoughts go somewhere. It also makes boring school lessons way easier to get through. It is hard to explain but I think this is the best way I can put it with my limited English.

@@Froahk Whenever you are overthinking; remember that things can go both way. It may make conversation awkward but in the flip side, things can go positively. When you are an introvert you are likely to spend time developing your talents the way extroverts might not have the patience for. This makes you stand out a bit in your talent areas, and envious extroverts are sometimes likely to target you to embarrass you and 'bring you down a notch' to make themselves feel better. Teachers are humans with faults just like everyone else and are not perfect and can be mean and petty sometimes. (They may not even realize they are doing this. Another talent of introverts can be sensing hidden stuff in others, motives and unconscious desires. A talent that can feel very threatening to some types without this ability.)

I'm a massive introvert, but (oddly, perhaps) decided to go into teaching. I'm well aware that students can be introverted and hate group work or answering questions. I always hated both - I still do. BUT I thought it important to ask the quiet kid and do group work sometimes because it's not always clear that it's an introvert issue if the student is quiet. Other reasons too, I just wanted to let you know not all teachers are extroverts. There are introverts out there who really understand, but feel pressured to get the quiet kid involved.

Well... I don't know how school is right now, but I've been lucky enough to have teachers in highschool who had the patience of waiting a few seconds more than usual for my answer. I took a graduate course in Constitutional Law with the amazing Judge Higginbotham, at the time a sitting Federal Appellate Court judge. The class was conducted using the Socratic method; in this case Judge Higginbotham would create discussion by randomly calling on students in our theater style classroom. I will never forget how I would have answers for all the questions, but when my name was called, putting the spotlight on ME, my mind would go blank! My grandfather had been a renowned NYC attorney, first ADA, then criminal defense lawyer. He could have taken a judicial post but chose instead to practice his passion, criminal defense. I had thought I'd follow his footsteps into the law - until this class experience, a cue to later understanding my introversion, led me to reassess. I revel in my opportunities for solitude, thinking, reading, exploring, creating. I am still most driven by connecting the dots of community, society, the complexity of the one and the many. I have and will always believe that I think and see as I do, for my core purpose, to speak out quietly but hopefully with powerful insights that may touch the minds and actions of those who , through their own pain hurt others, or through complacency - compounded by our industrial-> now media/high tech centered reality, judge, or preen their vanity for power or superficiality might open their lives to the needed betterment of us all.

I think a lot of people are mistaking introversion with shyness/social anxiety. I'm an introvert: it just means that I like to stay alone, and that being alone gives me energy. Socializing is exhausting to me, but that doesn't mean I can't have a casual conversation with people. It's just that if I have to choose between being alone and being with people, I will choose to be by myself. I may be a little shy, however I can and will talk to someone if I can't find my way for example, and that isn't necessarily a sign of extroversion, is it? Remember: extroversion is when people find their energy in other people, going to parties, etc. While introversion is the opposite. You can be a shy extrovert, and confident introvert.

Socializing sucks the life out of me. It is quite shocking how it affects me to have to be at a social gathering for 3-4 hours. Afterwards I feel completely mentally and physically zapped and I might even feel tired through the following day as a result. So we introverts must pick who we talk to very carefully!
@stevethomas743 жыл бұрын
@@billsimms2511 Indeed, Bill. I'm in a walking group and I have no problems talking to some if not all of them whilst on a walk. I feel totally fine and energised all day afterwards too. Now put me around those people all sat at a table (i.e. one of our Christmas meals) and after 2 hours (or even less) and I'm DONE. If I stay for longer (and I'm forced to make even more small talk *bleughh!), I feel like I'm 'hungover' for a day or two afterwards. I never understood why until I read up on introverts and then it made so much damn sense to me!
@wisewolfen95443 жыл бұрын
Similarly, notice that many people will mistake introverts as being "antisocial". This is the entirely wrong terminology, in fact. Asocial refers to the indifference or separation one has from society. Antisocial is related to mental illness and a person who is antisocial has a lack of empathy and understanding for others. People who are antisocial can even be hostile to society and this kind of behavior is typical in sociopaths. An antisocial person do not have the ability to socialize. An asocial person can and can do so well, but often choose not to for lack of interest. Most introverts are asocial not antisocial.
@firstname55563 жыл бұрын
Tbf it's really introverts who are shy and socially anxious that really have a hard time. People brought up Einstein, Gandhi, etc when they talk about introversion. I wish they talk more about the quiet introverted kid sitting next to them at school who is just an average student and not the star of the class.

I cried so hard during this video. It really hurt my heart because I could identify with everything she addressed in this video. I have always known I am an introvert, and I spent the last 19 years of my life being ashamed of it. Growing up I always saw "conscientious" as a comment my teachers left on my report cards. They always walked up to me and asked me what was wrong because I usually didn't say anything in groups. Kids called me stupid and stuck up because I prefer silence and I've been accused many times of cheating because obviously quiet and stupid are synonymous *sarcasm XD*. I love this video because I couldn't have said it better myself. Introversion is not a bad thing. It's not. Extroversion is not a bad thing either. My hope is that society allows individuals to embrace themselves as they are. I can laugh about the experiences I have had as an introvert in a social world now, but growing up it was very difficult. It was even harder for me when I started college. If there are any introverts who are reading this, I'm going to tell you what I wish someone had told me every time I got made fun of for being quiet: "Your silence speaks volumes. It takes courage to be able to stand alone and not be shaken by the quiet within. Don't let anyone tell you that the way you are is wrong. You are who you were meant to be and the more you embrace that, the further you will go." I love introverts! :D :D :D

I'd love to take a moment and thank Susan Cain for her truly honest and direct approach, extroverts and introverts are both needed equally, as both together will form a better planet, Introverts require alone time/safe spaces to fully connect with their inner self, they sometimes like to see from all different perspectives before making a decision. By giving introverts the platform/space and chance to raise their voice in their unique way, the world would be more synergistic. Most people see introverts as weak, soft or even unworthy at times, yet introverts are the key needed to unlock the great treasures of humanity. Together we can achieve better. Parents need to understand that introversion is not a disease or an indication of low IQ, it’s something every other individual is born with.Introverts are already not devoid of inhibitions of the outer world, at such times it is extremely crucial for the family members to not push their children and realise the amount of damage it can lead to one’s self esteem at such a tender age.

I experience that it depends a lot on the other person I'm with, their consciousness. Sometimes no senseful thought can form. Have you tried speaking it just by yourself, audio record or video record it?

I think being an introvert has impacted my teaching in a good way. The quiet introverts have a teacher they connect with and I feel like I notice them more. I consider them with group work.

Your book absolutely changed my life. I call it ‘the introverts Bible’. Fantastic work and great research went into it.

Brown Dairus i think theres a lot of truth in this. Is like or you express your ideas "outside" or "inside", but they need to manifest themselves one way or another.
@Gyvulys6 жыл бұрын
Do not think something is truth and applies to everyone just because some famous person said it. Being introverted is nothing special, it doesn't give you some mental superiority. If anything, it shows mental inferiority, if introverts' lack of social abilities is anything to judge by.

AmIgOltu introverts aren't socially challenged, they just don't do it as much. Also, I think introverts build better relationships with friends or family as that's how most of us are. IMHO of course.

Why do people always try to FORCE introverts to change? People should be free to be who they naturally are without that pressure to "fit in". It's the absolute worst feeling when someone wants you to change who you are.

Because it can help them in certain occasions. I used to have anxiety asking questions in class, talking to people older than me, even picking up a phone to order anything or just call someone i dont know on the phone. But in every instance throughout my life i got pushed to do things that I hated which helped me cope more.

@@z3toot: Possibly. Of course, if people let us be ourselves they may find we naturally get better at this stuff without being pushed to be something we're not.

Lot of people reflect their life on you and thinking you must be a very lonley and sad person beeing with you alone. Because they would be in our situation. They dont understand we are not lonley, we are not bored having time with ourself, we are not sad or how much energy we loose in "normal" situations. But to be fair, i dont understand extroverts too.
