I guess we can “fish” now? 🇮🇹 #51

There is a reason why fishing is called fishing, and not “catching”!
For the longest time, Ryan and I thought about how we should get into fishing.
But none of us knows how to fish, and also, blood makes me faint between, which makes me a terrible candidate for cleaning a fish. So between our multitude of boat projects and two mistrals to dodge, we never really thought about it (apart, of course, from that time that I decided to try to fish an octopus.)
But one day near Ajaccio, Corsica, we randomly ended up at a fishing store and decided that it was time. With zero skills or knowledge in the matter, our chances of catching a fish were minimal. And although it took us many trials and errors over the course of a month, we finally achieved to catch our dinner!
This is a video about what NOT to do when you get into fishing, and we hope that you'll get a good chuckle out of it :)

Someone else mentioned this, but you need to bleed a lot of fish (like Tuna) right after you catch them or the flesh will be ultra-bloody and the fish will sometimes take on a "fishy" taste. Cooking it I'm sure the fish was fine, but I would bleed it if I was using the fish for sushi. Lots of videos how to bleed fish. Good job catching it and I'm sure you will catch and enjoy many fish to come. It will become a cool thing to do when on passage. I tend to throw them back, but love fishing from the boat, even when sitting at the marina.

Years ago, legendary musician Al Hurt was on the Johnny Carson show, and Johnny Carson asked him about deep sea fishing out of New Orleans because Johnny liked to fish and wanted to know how Al fished there. What kind of line, pole, lures. Al Hurt said, well, you get on a boat and you just take two Igloo chests. One full of good cold beer and the other full of dynamite. Then you had to remember which one to hold, and which one to throw. Fishing was simpler back then.

I like this episode, it reminded me on something I did many years ago on a sailing trip to Rhodes. No wind so we were going under motor and we were totally bored. I started searching through the starboard locker of our charter Beneteau First and found a fishing line that was coiled on a cork board and had a hook as well as spoon lure and a weight attached. OK let’s do some fishing we thought, which we had never done before. There is a saying that fortune favors fools, and this day we proofed this saying because we caught two decent sized Tunas enough for the crews of two boats. We had no clue what we were doing, we were just damn lucky. I have never fished ever since.

I’m sure many will point out the obvious about using a metal leader with a big lure. Loosing a lure is likely the most common way many learn this. Even though I have been fishing successfully off the back of my sailboat for well over a decade, I like your honesty. And also, I can’t wait to try the soy, honey, tahini, and that last ingredient(I forget). Looks yummy. Thanks

Small tuna species have some dark red flesh (aka the blood line) that can taste strong. Remove the dark red portions of the meat immediately after catching the fish and the remainder will taste better.

Yes you need a stainless Leader. They can't bite off. We would use surgical tubing and line with a leader. When a fish hit it the tubing will stretch and tire it. Then pull it in.

I began salt water fishing off the New Jersey, USA coast when I was 6 years old on my Father's boat (76 years ago). We NEVER used lures. We used one or more hooks depending on what we were fishing for and "live" bait. "Killies" (similar to small sardines). Where you are, you should consider using squid. Forget those expensive lures. the Old Coastie

Congratulations on being inquisitive enough and interested in pursuing a new, classic sport. Lots of fishing has been done for rest, relaxation, and sport over the years, as well as incidentally feeding yourself with a tasty harvest. Although on a cruising boat it might have a bit more importance, and the fish might be a bit bigger. Hope you get some big tuna and maybe a black marlin. A few spear guns for snorkeling/scuba to complement your surface fishing would be a good idea too. Enjoy!

Yes Ryan and Sophie...Fishing (the art of landing a fish) is but 1 part of a learned skill. Then what to do (cleaning and filleting etc.)are more steps to learn 1 at a time. You should always try to fish for a particular type of fish....then think like the fish...eg: How deep....does this fish grab the line...or just gently nibble and so on. But Fishing is a very relaxing and satifying pastime....good luck.

Hey guys, I've been fishing off my yacht for years and I've only caught one single tuna ever!! I've got a mountain of gear and no idea how to use it, I've been advised by folk who claim to know what they're doing, I trail 2 lures off a handline and a rod whenever I go for >3 hrs sail so I know your frustration. That one fish was spectacularly awesome though - I was carving sushimi straight off the carcas and into my mouth. Thanks for the vids

If you can, adjust your rod holder and tip it more upright. Otherwise the rod will just get pulled out of the holder. Good that you got a leash on it. Fish bite the line...that is why you use a Steele leader and heavier line as Sophie was suggesting. Ryan you cheaped out and lost an expensive lure..... Also sailing Nahoa has a really good video on fishing.....Ben is really good at it

Looks very dark red that Tuna. Did you bleed it out first? Usually a deep nick behind each pectoral fin and then hold it up by the tail should bleed it out well. Best of luck guys.

That is an interesting video. 👍🙂 Surprised you didn’t learn about leaders (usually a piece of metal braided line or a mono filament line stronger than your actual line) so the fish does not bite through it. Most people spend ages trying to figure out what kind of lure to use but some get great results from painted pieces of scrap wood or in my case (fishing for small fish on a stream) a feather tied onto a small hook (feather from a down filled pillow). My enjoyment from fishing is the amount of pages I can read from an interesting book while my lure dangles below a float looking uninteresting to fishes swimming by. Definitely not subsistence fishing... glad you guys are enjoying yourselves and learning the joys of Catching 👍🙂

The singular best book for cruisers wishing to be newbie fishermen is the book "Fishing to Live" by Lance Gettler available on Kindle. If I understand it he was a first mate on a fishing boat at some point and moonlights delivering sailboats around the world. There are certainly more detailed and encylopedic books on many fishing nuances, but this is a no nonsense - here is what you need to do and how to do it with the correct equipment. Asking a tackle and fishing supply store what you need is like asking a barber if you need a haircut.

a bad day fishing is better than a good day at work. You want at least a braided 50 pound test line and a lot of people claim the squid looking lure, something with tales is best for your situation. you may find that you might need a metal leader so their teeth don't bite through the line, but sometimes the leader throws them off too. You could ask some of the other sailing channels that have success to tell you what they use.

That was a spectacular sunset. So, if we weighed every fish (the ones big enough to keep) and divided the weight by what I've paid in gear, gas, bait and time, the fish I have eaten that I caught myself cost me more than wagyu steak!!! So don't feel bad!

This has to be one of your best posts. As for being "Novices" to fishing.... We call it "Fishing" and not "Catching" for a reason. Salt water is by far different than fresh water for species. As others have commented, a steel leader is recommended regardless of environment. A hand line is just as effective as a rod and reel and less expensive. The snubber is awesome for trolling. Do NOT waste good liquor on fish. Learn the anatomy of the ichthyology. A puncture slightly behind and above the eye of most species will dispatch them instantly. Fileting is a practice makes perfect exorcise. LOL You have to start some where and to not start is, well let us begin in earnest, with the exuberance of a child. The experience will follow, the skill will develop and the memories will be priceless! If you guys ever reach the North West and tag a Halibut the size of a barn door (the largest I ever hooked was 200lbs and my first was 80lbs) you will be "HOOKED" for life. I would also recommend some sport crab pots for the NW. Dungeness Crab are plentiful and unbelievably tasty. Awesome show!

Learning to fish is finding what works for you. No two people fish the same. If you have success, take a moment to look around. Then you can duplicate it. Don’t overlook night time fishing when the conditions are right (full moon is a good time to learn). Also, more fugal! Save the line on the real for some other type of fishing. Someone mentioned Barracuda. Heard they were tasty but I would avoid eating any predator like that. They eat other large fish and have higher concentrations of diseases since they accumulate. Some say the small ones are fine but why risk it.

Congrats on catching your first tuna. It was pretty funny and quite a learning experience for you both. LOL Sophie you are a bit squishy to be living off the sea. Oh my alcohol abuse alert for using vodka to kill a fish. Use a sharp knife to cut the gills or sever the head. Get a filet knife as well - really helps with harvesting as much meat as possible. Catching enough fish to feed yourself is responsible fishing. That tuna dish looks super yummy! Well done Sophie!

Most fish are lost because people don't use knots that keep the hook or lure on. Learn sum basic knots and that will help. And when trawling don't have your lure to far from the boat. Maybe 2 boat lengths. 3 is to much. So just inside the last bubbles of your wake. And a trace of stainless steel wire directly after your line using a swivel. Then attach the lure. The stainless can be purchased at your chandler. but take your kit with you to the chandler and get him to show you. Good Luck.

Make sure you guys read up on each Countries fish season. You can be fined if you catch a particular fish out of “season” & for fish not meeting the proper size minimum. don't fish in a “reserve” area = more fines. If you are not sure if the fish is too small or out of season = don't post on you tube. I would suggest you buy a “fish identification” book...that will help you to see if you want to eat it, use as bait or save it’s life & throw it back in the ocean. I was watching a you tube channel of people fishing in Asia...what I learned was just keep it simple. They used bamboo fishing poles with an old Orange Crush soda plastic bottle for a bobber & used fried pig ears for the bait. LOL. They caught a whole boat full of fish. With regards to fishing lures...each one typically is for certain fish. So read the package & also look at the website of the lure manufactures. Or just use a can of sardines as bait or frozen/fresh shrimp🍤, fish parts you don't eat or squid. Also you can use the fish parts that you don't eat for chumming for more fish. (look up “bait chumming” it will help you bring more fish towards your fishing line/boat). Congratulations on your first fish = TUNA!! yum yum fish 👏🌊🐟That’s a great fish to catch!! The KZbin Channel "Free Range Sailing" his showed a number of things how to fish, land, kill, and clean fish on a daily boat. I didn't read all the comments so please excuse be if someone already mentioned them. The basics, first you want to stun the fish with a wack from something like a baseball bat to the head. Next a knife to the brain and the fish is dead. Next you want to bleed out the fish ki believe a knife around the gills. Then gut, clean (rinse). After that you can filet, make into steaks or how ever else you want the fish.
