One of my dear friends got oral cancer, she had her tongue removed and rebuilt from another part of her body, then removed it again because her body rejected it, removed all teeth, voice box and jaw bone removed, and had a trach and a feeding tube. Never smoked a day in her life. The dentist found it, and she went thru absolute hell with pain and deformed face, as well as not being able to talk anymore. She fell into a bad depression and became a home body. It came back a 2nd time, and it killed her at age 44. I miss my sweet friend Kathy😢

What a truly horrific life she was forced to live. It's really hard for me to imagine the pain , fear, disturbance in her life, + blow to her self-esteem that she must have gone through. And then to have it come back!!! She must have been a very strong lady. They say that "God never gives us anything that we can't handle" but this poor soul's diagnosis, really invasive treatment, + the most severe pain she must have gone through.....I can't even imagine it!!! And after going through all that just to have it come back - I know it would be too much for me + I'd do that euthanasia where they supply you with the meds. What a nightmare she must have gone through. If you don't mind could you tell me more about your dear friend Kathy's life, diagnosis, treatment, etc. She must have been one very strong lady! May she R.I.P 💐

I just finished watching this video and I feel like I found somebody who really knows how brutal this cancer can be. I was diagnosed earlier this year with a sore tongue on my left side and it was chalked up to allergies. I also didn't know there was such a thing as oral cancer. Two weeks went by and I was getting concerned that it had not gone away. A dentist appointment saved my life. Things quickly changed in my life and I felt like I was just given the "death sentence". I had many emotions and kept saying "why me" because I thought I had been taking care of myself - going to the gym, eating healthy, not smoking, occasionally drinking. The only good news was that they found it early and it was Stage 1 squamous cell. I had surgery with a reconstruction as well and 30 radiation treatments. Today I am 3 weeks out from radiation and still feel like this journey will never end. But after reading your harrowing story I feel like there really is a second chance waiting for me out there. Thank you so much for posting your story and I am so glad that you are educating people that you need to pay attention to your mouth. I wish I could talk with you via phone or email sometime if that would be okay. Again, thank you for your uplifting story. God bless you!!!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤

My person guess when we get these things that they are caused from venereal diseases like HPV, herpes and those things. I guess we should always use mouth washes and anti viral vitamins to help to keep us strong. But dentists do not check for oral cancers even though I remember that several years ago our government said they are to do it each visit. But again, these are the same dentists who don't know how important irrigation is during cleanings and procedures to keep germs and plaques from being swallowed

Let's to more than pray. ASK for a thorough oral cancer screening at your dental check up. If you are not getting one, move to another practice. The pain to dentists of losing patients will motivate them to raise the bar, make changes, and provide the care you deserve. Oral cancer screenings is in the American Dental Association guidelines!

When I was a senior in high school, my great uncle had oral cancer that he was a nearly live long smoker of no filter camel cigarettes. They did surgery on him and took over half of his tongue, half of his jaw, part of his neck, but they didn’t reconstruct it.. I took him to all of his appointments at the doctors and held his hand while they took the stitches out of his tongue and bless his heart. He just cried like a baby. I’m all I can imagine how painful that was. He also had a trach and I got to clean that out for him.. unfortunately he passed away right after I graduated high school.

Thank you soooo much! I was wondering when “The Patient Story” would have someone with a head and neck cancer history. I’ve seen your videos. You are helping so many people. I know that nowadays, dentists say that any sore or discoloration in the mouth that doesn’t heal or go away in two weeks should be shown to a dentist. I’m a long-time survivor of breast cancer but am very aware of oral cancers. My dental hygienist always does an inter-oral cancer exam but doesn’t have the dentist do a neck exam. Now I’ll request that exam, annually (I, too, don’t drink or use tobacco or vape or weed, btw). I know that HPV-caused oral cancers are on the rise, too. Anyway, I wish you everything that’s good in life and health.

What an amazing story. I wholeheartedly agree on the oral cancer screening. My dentist performs this annually if you choose to have it done. It costs me $25. It’s money well spent as far as I’m concerned. Some people don’t want to get because they don’t want to spend more money than they have to. Yes, it’s a very small price to pay. In 1985 at the age of 18 I was diagnosed stage 3 Hodgkin’s lymphoma. I understand the radiation treatment part. I was just finished with nine months of chemo and then needed six weeks of radiation. Since my tumor was between my lung and rib cage near my heart, they had to radiate me from my belly button all the way up to my chin, and just under my ears. Going through the first three weeks of radiation was harder than the nine months of chemo. I gave up after three weeks, because all my hair was falling out which I did not do during chemo, and I couldn’t eat or swallow hardly at all, because the radiation on my throat. When I gave up after three weeks, I was called into the doctors office and was given that speech about living and fighting. I did go back and finish the last three weeks. But I weighed 87 pounds after I was done with that. I’m 5 foot six and I looked horrible. I ended up having to spend the next couple weeks in the hospital to get IV fluids, and other things that they needed to do to help me gain weight. Since I had so much radiation on my chest, I ended up having to have a bilateral mastectomy in 2010. Then a couple years ago I had a quarter size spot on my chest that came back as basal cell carcinoma. That had to be removed and then earlier this year I was diagnosed with stage 0 vulva cancer. Our bodies take a toll on how many times you’ve been diagnosed with any type of cancer. Hopefully for me four times was enough.
