The Netherlands used to be gigantic and connected to the UK by an area known as Doggerland. That area was a prime hunting ground for seasonal hunter-gatherer nomads before the ice shield disappeared, together with parts of Germany, the UK, Sweden, Finnland and Norway. It was a plan from engineer Lely who also had the plan to fill the whole zuiderzee with land, only leaving some parts of water for the towns on the 'new land'.
