The Netherlands used to be gigantic and connected to the UK by an area known as Doggerland. That area was a prime hunting ground for seasonal hunter-gatherer nomads before the ice shield disappeared, together with parts of Germany, the UK, Sweden, Finnland and Norway. They mainly hunted mammoths and reindeer. It's also for that reason that people in those countries tend to be rather tall and why the Dutch are taller than everyone else in Europe.

It was a plan from engineer Lely who also had the plan to fill the whole zuiderzee with land, only leaving some parts of water for the towns on the 'new land'.
