I was concerned you had gotten sick when you hadn’t posted a video. Good to hear you are much much better👏🏼. The thing is when you craved the watermelon it is rich in potassium and watermelon is a great natural electrolyte…two things that were good for your body after being sick, and even though you had been drinking water the watermelon hydrated your body. Water should be sipped when nauseous or it can cause you to throw-up. The cruise ship was excellent taking care of you, & cleaning/sanitize your cabin probably better than being at a hotel. Thanks for sharing your experience..and once again glad to hear you are on the other side of this illness.

My sister was on a princess cruise a couple months ago, and had a similar experience with the virus. They prescribed her medication’s, but she wasn’t able to keep them down. So the medical staff came back and gave her a shot. That did help her, and she was finally able to get some sleep. But when she checked her charges, she was hit with a $40 fee for the shot. When she called and asked if it could be removed since she got sick on their ship, they agreed and remove the charges. Just something they keep in mind. If the charge is there, it’s possible to reason with them.

Just so you know, Tricare Overseas is who you send your bill to before filing your travel insurance claim. Takes about 3 weeks to get a payment. Also had what I now think was Norovirus on Enchanted. I ended up so sick and dehydrated, had to get an IV in medical on day 4 of my illness (along with medications). My bill was $800, but was worth every penny. I enjoyed the rest of the trip immensely. I also thought that the medical staff was great, professional and caring.

Never ever drink out of the faucet. Always make sure you have bottled water. Never walk around Barefoot on the outer decks even the slightest cut bacterial water can into your bloodstream in some cases it can even get into the pores of your skin. Carnival and princess have a horrible problem with their Drainage Systems backing up so when you think you're walking through regular water you're actually walking through sewage. Constantly wash or sanitize your hands. You have no idea what surfaces other people onboard have touched. Even after washing your hands before getting food at the buffet line you need to wash your hands after you have used the buffet line because things like tongs and trays and surfaces in the buffet line may be contaminated. If you're going to use the spa or sauna make sure you bring two towels one for wiping your face and the other one for wrapping around you. Be very careful not to let the face towel touch any other surfaces. Another very common area to come in contact with Norwalk virus is in fact the hot tubs quite frankly it's best to just avoid them altogether. Every time you open a door or touch something realize think to yourself that you may be contaminated and need to wash your hands before putting your hand to your face. Carry hand sanitizer with you do not rely on the sanitizer stations on board the ship. All too often these stations are empty and even if they are full there is still risk the chance of it being contaminated simply by touching it. Even something as simple as touching an elevator button or holding the elevator door can get you contaminated. This might all sound like paranoia but it has already been proven this is how Norwalk virus is transferred and spread so quickly on board a cruise ship.

That's awesome they didn't force you off the ship. I saw the heat team (I called it the vomit brigade) on one cruise. We were in rough seas and a large portion of the ship was sea sick. They'd come and rope off the area clean and then more on to the next. Not a job I could do.

I did opt for the shot rather than the pills since I couldn't keep those down. My cost was $60 for the shot and medical visits to my stateroom. It was my first cruise but due to how well the crew treated me it did not put me off cruising. I came home and booked my next 2.

Yikes! Your illness sounded like something far worse than Norovirus, meaning that you likely didn't have it. Norovirus usually lasts no more than 2 or 3 days. Also, Norovirus doesn't cause Diarrhea that is as severe as it sounds like you had. My thoughts are that you had some kind of food poisoning, probably Salmonella or Ecoli, both being far more serious than Norovirus. Both are very easy to fall ill with, and with the amount of people on crews ships, that is easy. In short, I think you got a horrible kind of food poisoning. Sorry you had to suffer this, and trust me, I have been through GI issues!!

So glad you're feeling better. I feel your pain...literally. Three days into our 2017 world cruise I came down with it. It's funny that I thought it was food poisoning at first as well. Then I felt a little better before it really hit. We had Imodium and other meds so didn't need anything from the medical center. One mistake I think you made is not calling them sooner. If you didn't have Imodium or the like already it would have helped taking it earlier in your illness. I was on HAL but of course they had the hazmat guys too. It was weird having that going on in your cabin. When I was finally released from quarantine they told me they had deactivated my cruise card (and would now reactivate it) so I was on double secret quarantine and didn't even know it. Many people who have had it told me they too felt sick, then a little better (going to dinner, theater, etc) before really getting sick. That must be how it spreads so easily on a ship.

From someone else who has served and therefore twisted sense of humour. The way you described it was hilarious. Like a water weasel toy only dispensing vomit and diarrhea....instead of water. On a serious note my wife got the vomiting version for 24 hrs in Mexico at a resort. Needless to say she didn’t scuba for that day and took the next day off as well to recover. I would never step foot on a cruise because I have really bad emetophobia as a result of a very traumatic childhood experience. I had rotavirus, which a more severe form of norovirus that mostly children get. I was violently ill with both issues for 48 hours straight and got so dehydrated that I basically couldn’t even walk. So I had to be hospitalized in the icu on an IV and nasal gastric tube just to get me to stop vomiting. It was a horrible experience and has made me very afraid of vomiting and getting any stomach bug.

Kevin, sorry to hear you got it, and that you had it so bad. Now I know why we were never able to meet up and share our military/law practice stories: we were each suffering with our own respective cases of noro -- because I caught it, too. My symptoms began on Wednesday morning (the 19th) after we came back aboard in Belize. The first 2 days were really rough. Like you, it started with the bowel issues, but by late night of that first night, it had progressed -- and I was also dealing with extreme dizziness, a horrible, nonstop headache, body aches, chills, fever, and then nausea and some vomiting (not nearly as much as you). Thank goodness every one in our family each had our own inside cabin, so I could safely self-quarantine. Thankfully I had also packed lots of meds to help control the symptoms: Imodium for diarrhea, Tylenol and Advil for aches and fever, Meclizine for dizziness, and Emetrol for nausea and vomiting. Like you, the only position in which I was reasonably comfortable was laying on my side in the dark, just staring at my TV and dozing in and out. My husband would periodically knock at my door to see if I needed anything, but I was feeling too sick to eat anything. All I consumed for 2 full days was sips of sodas from my minibar that I allowed to go flat. I barely slept for 3 nights. We disembarked on Saturday, and I just stayed on the sofa all weekend. I am finally feeling almost all better, but it has taken much longer than the 1-3 days they say noro usually lasts. Here's to us both feeling better and to maybe meeting up another time.

My husband and have traveling on cruise ship for almost 20 years, we have only had norovirus once and fortunately for us, it was mild lasting only a day. We are usually pretty good about washing our hands getting back to our stateroom and before we eat. We have been on cruise ships where there was an outbreaks but have been pretty lucky. I usually carry things like Pepto Bismo and Imodium as well as OTC pain meds as some places it is hard to find pharmacy within reasonable distance of the cruise ship.

Going back some years now on my very first cruse a 3 day trip on the now long sold off P&O pacific Dawn from Brisbane; I came down on day one in the late evening with what was clearly the starting to seasickness I was never sick but it prevented me enjoying food for the next 24h when I finely realised I needed to go to the medical centre on the afternoon of day 2 ( in hindsight I needed to see somone early on day two ) my doctors consult and maxalon tablets for the nausea must have cost me over AUD$250 but in those days my travel insurer covered everything - far better coverage than my private health insurer on land does today. The Moral of the story is that you must take out travel insurance on every trip. and if you get sick on a cruise, get help early don’t wait and hope that things will get better because they often won’t and the time your waiting and hoping is your holiday enjoyment going down the drain. Hi Kevin! Glad you're over that! Sounds like a night-mare. As a Canadian, I've heard about those horrific charges if you need medical assistance, although I suspect those huge bills only apply to being in the ship's actual medical facility. Probably, the cruise lines consider Noro-virus as something of a cost of doing business, and medications, outside of the US are often much cheaper to aquire. Nonetheless, I'm glad you were treated so well. After gastro- intestinal bugs, some of the best foods to eat include greek yogurt and broccoli (probably not together tho...). The yogurt helps the lining in your digestive tract, and broccoli has been described as an intestinal/ microbial "scrubber". I've personally found both of these helpful in recovering from food-borne illness. Thanks for the great info, again! Cheers!..from North Vancouver

Well... the only cruises I have done were FREE! I was invited by the English instructor Svetlana, for a private lunch cruise on a square rigger training ship from the former CCCP (Soviet Union). This was during the glasnost and perestroika change over from socialism to capitalism (and now fascism thanks to Putin)! The lunch was awesome. The other ship I had the pleasure of sailing on, was an old one of two seaworthy US Navy Liberty ships from WW2. Today she makes many local cruises around the San Francisco bay. My first cruise on that last ship as she is called the Jeramiah O'Brien, a steam transport ship. So. My initial 'maiden' cruise on the Jeramiah O'Brien was through her purser, who was also a member of the Rosicrucian Order, AMORC at our local affiliated body, the Golden Gate Pronaos. (a smaller local group of AMORC). Well this turned out to have been a nightmare for me. BTW earlier on the ship on this sailing, I did get to visit the engine room as it was open to the public. I enjoyed that as well. Later on as we had a whole host of people on board, there was absolutely NO seating whatsoever! Then if that wasn't bad enough having to sit on hard surfaces, uh, I was in the beginning of my fifth week 'tenure' of suffering from Brainerd diarrhoea. This was during the 90's. Well, back in 1983 in a small rural town called Brainerd, Minnesota (and that is a no brainerd! Ha ha!) Yeah, just had to toss that in! There was, seriously, an outbreak of many residents in Brainerd of falling ill to sudden urgent explosive watery diarrhoea. (Yes even incontinence was common)! Now, I was one of the very young as most of the 122 victims were actually elderly folk. Now, even being one of the younger persons with BD, perhaps it was not so wise to go onto this cruise. It was rare, so after cogitating on this, I might never get this opportunity again, like I decided to go for it! Well in the Bay Area as there were and so far still haven't been any outbreaks, there have been some individual sporadic cases, as it is not passed from person to person. How I wound up with it is anyone's guess. All I know is that some almost five weeks before when I first had my initial diarrhoea attack, I went and saw my doctor, and got various tests, and no etiology (causative agent) was to be found! No bacterial or viral infection, no Fungai, no parasites, nothing! My doctor and the rest of the medical staff just had no answer! Finally on two subsequent medical follow-up visits, apparently in JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association) there was an article on Brainerd and their outbreak of diarrhoea. The symptoms come on sudden by total unexpected surprise, and can cause incontinence, and this of course would be followed by an urgent need of a toilet. The diarrhoea attacks can happen daily (24 hour period) from 10 to 20 episodes. That is from in the neighbourhood of an hour to two hours between episodes -- day AND night! Thus fatigue would obviously come about as one's normal sleep pattern obviously would be compromised. Well being on this boat, fortunately there were plenty of heads (loos) about the ship. Only problem was no comfortable seating! At one point about 20 minutes or so before calling back to port, I spotted an EMPTY SEAT! I grabbed onto it! Only problem was if I were to get up for nature's call most likely I could lose that valuable seat! So I tried to hold on as it was close to mooring as our cruise was about to come to an end. I couldn't hold on any longer or I just knew I would wind up shitting in my WHITE pants! Well No sooner than I got out of that seat, weel.. it's sorta like this, well... it happened! I fucking shat my pants! I mean BIG TIME as this dark brown guck just shot out of me like an overactive bilge pump! NOW, that I just had this VERY embarrassing accident in front of a hoard of guests on this ship from WW2, and quite visible of what just happened, yes, I did get a few stares, and one person asked if I was alright. I just came out and told him honestly that I was suffering from a little known form of gastroenteritis call Brainerd diarrhoea. To other people it is just a shocking sight! They could simply walk away from me. I am the only person that can't do that as of course I am the one who had the diarrhoea made public -- involuntarily! I was stuck with this until alighted the ship, waited for Muni (the former name of the transport system) to get on a trolleybus and a tram without being thrown off like what just more recently happened to me on Delta Airlines on a flight from Atlanta heading for Spain (that hit the media hard! JUST GREAT)! I did manage to get back home and threw those whites off, and jumped into the shower. But as I was clean now, the diarrhoea still persisted on average of every 90 minutes or so. After five weeks of this horror show, I finally had this self-resolved. FINALLY!

If y you had this virus for the majority of your trip, did Princess offer any kind of compensation for missing most of your cruise days??? And what would happen if you were due to leave the ship and you were still that sick? Would a hotel take you, if you were were actively that ill???

No rules to booking a hotel you just have to be responsible. Lots of contactless check in’s now. As far as the ship, it’s like any other vacation package, you’re not going to get refunded due to sickness

@@30AndAWakeUp - you are most welcome. Navy here too (1969-73) although never set foot on a ship. Just be careful which cruise lines you decide to embark on. I’m so glad you’re feeling better! I’m very impressed with how Princess handled this! I’ve had norovirus on a cruise, and it’s definitely no fun. I now always take some capsules of Activated Charcoal in my medicine bag, and take at the first sign of those bubble guts- works for food poisoning too. I also always take some electrolyte packs with me to replenish after bouts of vomiting/ diarrhea. I think that is why your body was craving the watermelon- it needed the potassium.

My experience is going to medical. I had princess protection I thought would cover the bill, but princess insurance required me to file a claim with my insurance first; my insurance covered the total cost minus $20. After months the claim was final and I received a $20 check from princess insurance to cover the balance. Great videos, it’s better to phone medical and ask for assistance. I appreciate your candor but you can get sick anywhere. You have less chance of catching a gastrointestinal illness on a ship than at many places you're likely to visit on land. The CDC estimates only about 1% of all annual U.S. norovirus cases happen on cruise ships - so referring to ships as Petri dishes may not be accurate.

I was horrendously sick when I was pregnant...and my husband's grandmother told me to eat watermelon. I thought it was an "old wives' tale", but I was willing to do anything so I tried it. It worked! Watermelon and ginger snap cookies lessened my symptoms enough to get me through several months of nausea. I saw a comment below about why watermelon was helpful. Apparently, the old wives' tale was based on science. :)

Very interesting. Glad you've recovered. Just for comparison, my spouse (who fits in the elderly group) caught cold on a back-to-back on Princess this past spring. Tons of people were coughing and our masks didn't help apparently. The cough worsened till she could hardly move around, bent over coughing every couple of minutes, coughing up a lot and finally went to the med center where they did a a great job, but told us initially $160. When finished the four meds alone (one an antibiotic) totalled $123 and with the xray, COVID test, blood tests, doctor's exam which diagnosed 'mild' pneumonia, etc., the total came to just about $1000 USD ($1400 Canadian). She recovered in about a week, except for the cracked ribs from coughing that took 2 months. Thankfully we had insurance. My advice would still be to call the med center sooner rather than later.
