It's not just about the detail, Funko Pop base "template" design is just really bad. To me they look like dog toys. They're tasteless. There are a lot of "simple looking" or stylized collectibles which are very cool or cute despite not being very detailed, asian toys designers (mostly from Japan and Hong-Kong) are experts at that.

i have 3 master grades, 1 high grade and one full mechanics under my belt. the HG and FM took about 4 hours to build and the MG took me 10-12 hours. althought theyre a huge time sink, for the most part theyre super easy to build. to see huge collections like the on shown in the video isnt only impressive finacially but also downright crazy when you think about how much time it wouldve taken the owner to build all of them. 10/10 hobby honestly and thats coming from a guy who basically hates mecha anime lol

I got 4 MG but they are fake since I can’t afford the real ones but my RG and HG are all official. All I could say is, they are much better than the funko pops, the engineering in some like the RG unicorn or the RG Tallgeese. @@snackboxone364 I've built a ton of Gundam kits, but for the past couple of years went to the military modeling side. Dude, the stickers in Gundam kits are the reason I hesitate to buy more. WHY cannot Bandai be arsed to just include water decals in the kit? This is standard practice for literally every other modeling company, and even Bandai do it for their non-Gundam models. Decals take time to apply, like everything else about building the kit, but they're so easy to adjust while wet, no ugly edges, and they look painted on. But with Bandai I have to order decals from China every time and wait like 2 months for them to arrive. I'll stick to Tamiya and HobbyBoss lol.

Funko Pop popularity seems to come in waves. I remember some years ago my local Walmarts and Targets had entire aisles dedicated to just Funkos. Then the Funko real estate started to shrink until they just occupied an endcap. Now they seem to be growing again in terms of the space they take up.

It's been a while since my last gunpla, I believe it was either the MG RX-78-2 Ver 2.0 or the RG Unicorn Gundam and that was almost 5 months ago. I've been doing more military models, such as tanks and aircraft, but my Gundam collection will always be there. I've only spent about 700 or 800 dollars on gunpla, but I'd say that's quite a bit considering my most expensive ones are the MG Sazabi Ver Ka and MG Nu Gundam Ver Ka which if you know about Gunpla, you will know how expensive these kits are.

Soon I moved to the RG tallgeese than stopped for couple of months than got the HG GM sniper 2, than the beginners kit for gunpla which included the RX-78-2 and Zaku II. Than I got my favorite kit the RG zeong last year than I finally moved on to the MG line which were longer to build than anything else I have built

It's not just video game stores that are becoming Funko Pop stores with gaming on the side. It's happening in all of the handful of comic book stores that exist in my country of South Africa. The demand for comic books and manga is extraordinarily high, but, instead these stores opt to invest more in merchandise that non-comic book/geek media fans would purchase rather than their regular customers. So needless to say, even though this video was more about the jokes, I am pretty open about my hatred for these damn things.

The hard-core model builds come from the armor or aircraft modelers, the amount of effort I've seen put into those kits is amazing. Gunpla already comes molded in it's colored plastic so you don't have to paint it, unlike military models.

You know, as a person who recently got into anime figure collecting I can honestly agree with this. Most general funko pops based off of media in the U.S look like the exact same except the only thing that changes is their character clothes, the mold and souless eyes are the same exact thing otherwise. Heck, even legos manage to do the whole souless eye thing better than actual funkos otherwise figures from like gundam, anime figs and nendroids are just 10x better. One last thing I should probably mention is not every pop is gonna look great lol, there’s so many questionable looking ones but very few times (and when I say few I mean like 2-3 times) is when there might be something good

For me, the only funkos worth getting are a) stuff from fandoms/interests with little to no merch, and b) stuff that strays from the base design. But even then there are a lot of ugly ones. The only funko I've ever bought myself (I have a couple that were gifts), was the Zoltar machine from Big. I think it looks neat, the machine part itself has some pretty cool detail, and the square faces and soulless eyes of the funko pop base actually fits the look of a fortune-teller animatronic pretty well lol

Unpopular opinion: Done right, a funko pop can actually look good, i thought the vault boy series (fallout) looked quite good, it really depends on the source material and how well it translates to a simplified form. Generally, if the art style is simple it would work well, in my opinion, people should be able to vote in which figures they want to see, rather than them just bringing it out anyway.

I once went into a GameStop and was immediately confronted with a freaking pyramid monolith of a kiosk stack of Funko Pops that reached the ceiling, to the point that I'm pretty sure that touching it was a dangerous game of Jenga. The wall adjacent was Funko Pops on shelves three boxes deep, floor to ceiling. I'm inclined to agree with that conspiracy theory too. My regular haunts at EB Games and JB HiFI have undergone so many changes, it's getting fucking nuts. Wall to wall Funko Pops, cheap gaming merch, T-shirts, imitation Lego sets and useless trinkets litter these places now. And it's making slim pickings for games a little more harder now. JB in particular has more room for fucking board-games and weird ephemera that it's made the PC games section even more tiny than it already was. That store mostly sells DVDS, anime and white goods but it's making room for all sorts of weird merch. Incidentally, I've only ever bought one Funko Pop, just one: a Marceline the Vampire Queen FP. It's kinda neat but doesn't spark that need to buy any more Funko Pops. Not in the slightest. Now Hot Wheels on the other hand, I've bought so many of those little diecast racers over the past several months or so that I can basically host my own 24 Hours of Daytona or Le Mans using nothing but Hot Wheels cars. And I don't need to go far or spend so much. I can just go to my local supermarket and pick up a single car for like $3 or a five pack for $12. It's cheaper than wasting money on NFTs *AND* I can actually hold them in my hand. I can touch them and admire the craftsmanship. Funnily enough, I actually stumbled across Matchbox merch for Top Gun: Maverick. I'm not kidding. The film isn't even out yet but the merchandise has been coming thick and fast. I don't really plan on watching that movie but I know without even seeing it that characters in the film are gonna be driving around in a Ford Mustang GT, a Mini Countryman, a Ford Raptor, a Dodge Challenger and apparently, someone owns a bloody Aston Martin DBR1 Le Mans racer.

Based on my experience as a lifetime HW and Matchbox diecast collector (also in Australia, Hi!), I don't think the Top Gun cars will actually be in top gun maverick; rather, it's one of two options: one, reproductions of cars in the film like you've predicted (they did the same thing for Fast and Furious) or two, cars with Top Gun inspired decals and art. I haven't seen this collection yet but personally I've found collecting harder these days as most of the real world models (my general breadth of collection, with the little printed lights) are becoming increasingly hard to find anywhere other than online. I think the limited run sets of five that cost about three times as much as a supermarket find is the new diecast meta.

They have very basic paint jobs (as they would appear in the real world) nor do they any fancy Top Gun branding on them. So I can only conclude that these cars will be appearing in the film in some form or another. Like, I kinda expect to see Tom Cruise "cruising" around in a Mustang GT or Dodge Challenger and, at some point, possibly meet up with someone with an expensive car collection that somehow includes a classic '50s Le Mans racer. Buuuuut if that's not the case, I still came away with some pretty sweet looking diecast cars. Oh, and did I mention that these packs also include little diecast Fighter Jets? Going off of that, I find that collecting HW and Matchbox to be mostly based on luck. Sometimes I could be out shopping for bread or milk and find something, sometimes I don't. I don't always actively look for anything in particular but if I find a hidden diamond in the rough, why pass it up?

I've had this debate with a couple friends. One of them has several funko pups (unsure how many he bought vs were given to him) and I was saying how I don't get understand the appeal because they're kind of ugly. It's branding. The Funko Pop brand is what makes some fetch a high price and I have to admit, it's what Funko Pop nailed perfectly. Even if you don't know the character, you know it's a Funko Pop. It's not just "a collectible of your waifu," it's "a Funko Pop™ of your waifu." And you have to admit, that also makes it a very easy gift for parents and other relatives to get for their kids.

@@urphakeandgey6308 Oh for sure, they definitely know what they are doing. I'm not entirely sure the branding is only what makes those prices go up though. I think it just has to do with the scarcity of some of those figures, not all of them fetch a high price and not all of the characters who fetch a high price are necessarily super famous. But all of them are simply considered rare. And yeah, it really does make for an easy gift. All things considered, I have absolutely nothing against them, it's just not for me.

@@voyager9959 I totally get keeping some figures in their boxes, I have done that myself. Plus at my age it's not like I'm going to play with them anyway. But I can't really say Funkos are the type of figures most in need of safe-keeping, they are just "cheap" toys.

Oh man, thank you for taking a deeper look at this comparison photo and Funko Pops in general. I'm a Gunpla builder myself, and have built over 200 kits in the last 5 years or so. You want to guess how many Pops I own? 2. A Sam Porter Bridges and a Higgs from Death Stranding.

Between us, my wife and I probably have hundreds of figures and models -- we're currently making the Bandai Mandalorian kit together, she's recently 3D-printed herself some baby Yodas/Grogus while I'm making some She-Ra figurines -- so it's fair to say we like ourselves some geeky display trinkets. And yet, one thing we independently, firmly agreed on is that Funko Pops are hideous, and we won't have them in the house.

I feel dumb for even having interest in Funko Pops when it released. I used to collect so much of these, at the time. I remember always wanting so much of them that I would lose control of myself. After a while, I was finally able to stop having an addiction of collecting Funko Pops and I would throw them away. That was definitely the best decision in my life and I'm proud of it.

I just don't understand the appeal of figures in general. Like, what do you even do with them? Just glance at them every once and a while? They aren't visually appealing as home decorations, and would likely be awkward to explain to guests. I can sort of understand the appeal of the ones Muta was talking about that you build your self. It's kinda like fan art, but for people without artistic talent.

​@@SupaKoopaTroopa64 I can explain my perspective. I collect anime figures and only buy those of characters I really like. My two most expensive and by far most favorite are the bunny suit versions of Chocola and Vanilla from Nekopara because they remind me of my childhood (Yes, I know that Nekopara is 18+, but 13 year old me got his hands on the games and really enjoyed them for the story, I'm serious.) Chocola and Vanilla cost me around 1k combined with all fees included. They just kinda motivate me, those characters were part of my life for a certain amount of time, so I think they deserve a place in my room. My collection has a lot of sentimental worth. It just makes me happy to have them.

I guess I can relate a bit more now. It's sort of like a souvenir from something personally important. I still don't get the people who have tones of figures from 10s or 100s of series though. There's no way they can have a deep personal connection to ALL of them. Maybe they're just high functioning hoarders?

I’ve only interacted with two funko pops. One was a Mother’s Day gift of baby yoda and one was a birthday gift I got of vegeta. I honestly don’t understand how/ why people get addicted to collecting them when there’s no inherent value with how many are out there.
