And later on in his life, thanks in part to the relationships he formed with his pen pals, he would go on to reevaluate his earlier biases and admit that he was taking things too far. I am a Georgia boy with roots all throughout Appalachia. True Hill Billies are typically not racist at all. This is a hard one for a lot of people to visualize, but many of them are descendant from slaves, themselves. There were Irish slaves and indentured servants in the United States. Not only that, the coal mining industry can definitely be considered a legalized form of slavery. Most everyone in Appalachia not born from wealth had very tough lives and have had to work hard. There is usually a ton of sympathy towards minorities, but in particular Black people. That said, there is a lot of "new racists" in Apalachicola, more wealthy and racist white people who have moved up into the mountains to get away from all the people that are different from them. They're transplants and not true natives. Cabin Fever pokes fun at this misconception pretty well with the gas station scene at the beginning and end.

I grew up in North Carolina (Air Force kid) and didn’t fit in there, but the levels of racism were/are probably worse here in California. They try to claim that “the parties switched places” during Nixon, which is absurd in its face, when in reality Republicans didn’t win the South until Reagan’s second term in the mid-80s. By which time most of the mainstream South had rejected racism.

My wife hates going to the grocery store here because she always has off comments made about our kids from random people. It's gotten so bad my oldest daughter(she is 6) asked if there was something wrong with her younger sister because of her skin. This is nothing; you all should see his HP Lovecraft video, wherein he spends the final third talking about his own backstory and revealing how much of a pathetic loser he is [quitting when he's criticized by a pro comic artist, abandoning film production because he finds set design boring and apparently beneath him], and accidentally revealing that he hates Lovecraft NOT because Lovecraft was a bigot, but that Lovecraft was successful IN SPITE of the fact that he was an infamous bigot, while Mr. Shadows -who supposedly is NOT a bigot, will NEVER be as good as Lovecraft. So when he starts coming after Wendigoon, who is more successful [and generally happy] than Mr. Shadows? In hindsight, this is not surprising at all. In praise of Shadows was _ALWAYS_ this pathetic, petty, and scummy

24:26 It offends me, as a gay man, that In Praise of Shadows asserts this playful insult to be "homophobic." In fact, it is pretty homophobic to assert an insult like that to be anti-gay. The man practically just called all gay men low testosterone, something only ACTUAL homophobes do.

Such a strange association to make, I think if most people heard that term they’d rightly think of a weak willed and overly passive yet also bitter individual and it’s more-so calling out someone’s behaviour not their orientation. I appreciate you talking about this stuff, Muta. Because of being autistic, I don't always know when someone is speaking to me or telling me info in bad faith (especially when they seemingly align with my own views). Plus - over the last few years - I've seen a lot of creators I enjoyed get cancelled and turn out to be shitty people, so I tend to pull away hard from all sides of major controversies if I don't know objectively who to trust. This was sadly one of those occasions for me, and honestly I trust you more than I trust him.

I hate the fallback onto gatekeeping horror. Horror is and has always been about holding a mirror to society, making people uncomfortable, and making them question themselves. Horror is not about being comfortable. "Horror is not SAFE" - Rob Zombie I Spit on Your Grave was a feminist flick. It wasnt trying to make you comfortable. It wasnt trying to glorify the men. It was trying to make you question the way you view women by showing the horror of actual mysoginy. Its supossed to make you feel like a pig and its effective. It was trying to make you hate woman abuse and see it in all the HORROR. Its the Schilnders List of Feminism. But people just see a woman suffering and call it trash. Homeboy has clearly never read Men Women and Chainsaws. He has no buisness telling anybody Left or Right what to fuckin do.

Agreed. There’s a lot of really great feminist scholarship in horror. Final Girls as a concept come from feminist film theorist Carol Clover, the idea of the lone surviving woman who starts the film as weak and helpless against the (typically male) villain and in the end overcomes her fears and turns the table on her male attacker.
