It's almost like dealerships demand speed over efficiency and don't train young people in how to be through they teach them how to do services fast. Bro, I thought you were smarter than this.. this is like the biggest issue in the industry, speed and money over efficiency and quality.

You did a great job, customer was impressed and left a positive review/note for your quality and professionalism and appreciated that you even cleaned their seat and floor after you finished the repair and you have no come backs.....but your efficiency us down 4% and that is unacceptable and don't give me the excuse about having to argue with parts about getting wrong items or missing pieces, or that you had to spend time on the phone with warranty or escalating the case because service advisors or warranty administrators won't do it and we don't make them and please keep your sob stories about us stopping you every 5 minutes to go check this out for a customer or I need you to put in a parts request for someone who is off/called out or does not know what is needed for their work..... we're going to let you go and bring in a better tech who can get things done or we will let you stay but put a letter in your file which will have you on probation and make you ineligible for a raise but you should be happy that you get to keep your job and strive to be at the level we demand.....by the way your now 9 tickets behind and a insurance inspector is here to go over a estimate you did and the manufacturer of a accessory that failed is on the phone that you need to speak to. Now if you don't mind my precious time is needing to be spent elsewhere like at the business lunch I have scheduled to go over my raise and bonuses with my boss

Probably doesn't happen that often because they are not being paid for it. Just like they are not paid to move cars around, get parts, talk to service advisor, etc. Prioritize speed and profit over everything, quality will suffer.

Flat rate was designed to improve performance and profit. It certainly improves company profits, but easily reduces quality of work. That in turn can cause a higher same issue return rate. Short-sitedness is too popular today.

When I was a young apprentice my mentor said one day "See that rack over there with all those books? Go look up what you're working on. If you are still having a problem then come see me. I don't have time to play 20 questions!" Computers make searching information so much easier now.

As a former dealership tech turned service writer. This was one of the reasons I opened my own shop. Guts don't want to look up I fo but come to me asking for additional diag time when I've looked it up and already know. So frustrating. Unfortunately it is the techs responsibility.

😆 hey buddy dont forget how long you have been a technician. The company doesn't hands-on teach young technicians how to use these amazing tools. They might not even understand what they are reading. They feel pressured for time and got overwhelmed. If they just dont give a shit about learning or head strong. let them struggle and get canned.

Hondas new service info for the 23+ vehicles on the IN is terrible for us. Everything is visual index based very interactive. I'm quite curious to see how companies like. Pro demand are gonna tame that down for there program.

When I started after 3 years, I left the dealership, I was a line technician, and I did everything from engine replacements to services. When I went to another dealer, I realized I didn't even know how to use a multimeter. Decided I was going to tech myself through KZbin, and now I'm pretty good, but like anyone else, I can still be better.

With all the information available now, people are reading less. And, open a book once in a while. If you don’t read hundreds of books, you are functionally illiterate.

Not going to lie, this channel really lost my interest. I used to love tuning in to watch repair videos, tips and tech talk. Now it's just the same type of video every time. Without the shop environment it's just dull....

Isn't that the truth brother, search a different way. It's amazing how you can find information by simply dropping of a few of the last letters.

Years back I worked for a dealer that prided it’s self on it’s reputation on fixing it the first time. Then the college educated son took over and it was efficient work orders (quick) and who ever was at the bottom of the billed hours list they were cut instantly. You could have the most come backs but if your invoice count was high you were golden!!!

I just started at a new shop and one of the older guys told me point blank not to look up repair procedures and just use my eyes to figure out what needs to be done for the job. While i understand his point it only takes a minute to look up and could save you big time. Makes me worry about his repairs 😅

Had a diesel ram come in. Boss said "repair time is only blah blah". I go over read the proceedure. Big huge yellow "CAUTION". Turns out a steel fuel line is single use only, must be replaced. I look at my parts, not there. I tell him we need that line. Reply back "no book time didn't say anything about a line." I tell him read the proceesure, there's a caution. Reply back? Book time says. Job done, line leaks. Half hour to 45 minutes he spends trying to say its not tight enough this, teflon tape that, I this, I that. Keeps leaking no matter what. I take a picture of the big fing warning, text it to him and say "Read the proceedure, it was in big yellow letters so you couldn't miss it". Oh parts guy never said this, that, blah blah.

I think another problem is you get the side eye or the what the hell you doing when you’re taking five minutes to look something up on the shop computer all data I will flat out. It sucks right now. I’ve never had such a hard time finding information on all data it used to be better. The search feature on a lot of systems and forums can be downright useless at at times.

I'm mobile and a lot of the money that I make is reading TSB's and reading service information I can't count the number of times I have gone to a shop, opened up the same service information they have, found a tsb, verified the TSB and went up front to collected my money 💰

Two young techs in our shop. I had to say "look it up" a about a half-dozen times a day for awhile. Now they rarely ask me for help. The mechanic I've been working with for years will just jump in and do part of the work himself. They'd rather waste lots of his time, than put a little effort into looking it up on the shop computer. I don't think it's lazy or malicious. They just don't have AllData available on their phones.

I have to ask my boss that. Idk what to do man, I feel trapped. I get paid pretty low, sub 30 dollars, get no breaks whether it's my two 15 minutes or half hour lunch, work pretty much 3-4 sometimes 5 bays by myself. My bosses are almost adverse to buying tools, reading TSB's, proceedures. They just look at labor times and base entire jobs off that. I do everything from regular services, to diagnosis/trying to diagnose while working on cars, dealing with customers, Point of sale, ordering parts, alignments, tires suspension, brakes; engine and tranny r&r's, clutches. You name it, I do it. I feel trapped staying here with all these promises but I don't see it happening. I feel like I'm going to end up broke and broken. I started a side business doing mobile repair, my boss told me they want me to take over the shop one day, but I'm hesitant as to how that would even work with the garbage pay I make, also I'm 32 and I'm already having back problems, stress and anxiety issues, knee problems, hand problems. Obviously I have no health care either and I work hourly. What would you do in my shoes? I have 14-15 years experience, can use everything from hand tools to diagnostics scanners and lab scopes, I'm A/C certified and was emissions certified, fully licensed and have worked on every manufacturer. Light passenger to massive cube trucks I have to crawl to work on because they don't fit in our shop but my boss brings them in anyways. There's always 2-4 more cars after the "last appointment" and I have to deal with multiple customers my boss told to come in, while I have cars on hoists, because my boss has "no time" or "forgot" he told them to come. I stopped bringing lunch because there is never time to sit and eat and I guess to make himself feel better, my boss will almost guilt feed me random fast food while working and I feel bloated and sick. I complained about all this two months ago when I told them I was quiting. They promised me changes, so far nothing. Would you leave this shop?
