Exactly, when I'm out and feeling cute, I'll have gay men approach me and ask if I'm gay. I'm not walking up to strangers and just shouting in their face that I'm bisexual. When I tell them I'm bi, there are absolutely gay men who will tell me that I'm not really bi or say things like "I remember when I still thought I was bi." The show depicts this because it happens all the time to bisexuals in queer community! And it feels good to actually see it represented!

@@alexbennet4195 it could, but usually, when people ask if someone is gay, they usually mean if they are homosexual, because gay is most commonly referring to homosexual men in particular. not to mention, many homosexuals didn't accept bisexuals as 'gay' in history unless they were dating the same gender as them. so it comes off weird and as erasing bisexuality when you ask someone who specified they were bi, like what nick did, if they are gay just because they are dating someone of the same gender

Right?? We fight for so long to be understood by the majority united, but once lesbian and gay people get understood and respected by enough cishet people, some of them then turn around and call us meticulous, confusing, invalid, try to decide our identity for us, as if they didn't just have to do the same thing for a long time with people, with our support behind them for their rights. - Sincerely, a bi ace who might as well have a Powerpoint presentation to help raise the small chances that explaining myself will actually get understood and respected.

“Clarifying that he’s bi every time someone calls him gay is annoying” actually everyone assuming he’s gay is annoying! And saying he should just let everyone believe something about him that isn’t true is so rude! It’s completely minimizing our sexualities to act like we should just go along with other people believing we have a sexuality we don’t. He isn’t just “basically gay,” he’s bisexual, that freaking matters, it’s a part of who he is, it affects his life. People are really asking us to just hide a part of ourselves? For what? The thing I love about heartstopper is that even when they do talk about all the hard parts and the more serious topics, it never seems hopeless. In so much gay content, especially when they talk about highschool, they always make it seem so hopeless because when you’re in that mindset it does seem hopeless. But it’s so refreshing to see a show discuss these serious topics without making them feel like the end of the world. It’s something that a lot of people need to see because it’s a great reminder that even when you struggle with mental illness, people love you and there’s still joy to find. Heartstopper is a wonderfully hopeful show and it helps heal my own shitty highschool experience.

I will forever hate the narrative that a happy LGBTQ story in a movie or show is "unrealistic" as if every single queer person has just had nothing but a negative, discrimination filled life. Happy queer stories exist! Happy queer people exist!!! We need to show them too!!! As important as it is to showcase the harsh realities as well, its just as important for positive stories to be shared as well.

Honestly when ever I hear "it's not realistic" that is a massive red flag. 🙄 I will never understand why some people just bash on wholesome gay content so much. Like yes it is important to tell the tragic realities some queer people face (but I feel like we're already saturated in sorrow with most of gay media and reality at this point). On the other hand an equally (sometimes even more) important topic should be represented in queer media is hope. People need to know that life can get better. That being queer comes with its ups and down just every other aspect of life. That you hold on to that joy those character on the screen display and don't stop until you have that same joy in your life because you deserve it. Honestly who the hell would even bother coming out if all that was portrayed in queer media was non stop realistic tragedy?

As an openly Bisexual woman since I was 14, bisexual erasure is a huge deal. It’s a problem I face from both the LGBTQ+ community as well as my heteronormative family and friends like Frederic said. Until I was 18, my whole family assumed I was a Lesbian, despite also dating two boys in those four years. They always assumed I was a lesbian bc “You have to pick one. You can’t like both.” or else I was just confused and experimenting. My first ever relationship was with a girl a year older than me and that was definitely not a PG relationship and I’ve also had relationships with men that were just the same! I’ve also had crushes on nonbinary people and androgynous folks that you genuinely gotta ask to tell and it is just upsetting to me that this is still very much a thing. I am now 22yo and I haven’t had a relationship since I was 17 because no one wants to date an open bisexual and if they do, it’s for all the wrong reasons. I have been asked out by woman who believed they could turn me away from any man forever and men who believe the same, which just frustrates me because why is it so hard to accept that I can like people beyond their appearances because I like most appearances? Bisexuality isn’t even exclusive to just liking men and woman, it just means you like 2 or more genders. You can be considered bisexual as long as you’re attracted to more than one gender so it’s just odd to me how much of a “Can we save her from the other side?” kind of scenario my love life has become. Im either more often chalked up to be nothing but a fetish or a cheater waiting to be born or I’m actually confused somehow like everyone says I am. Bisexual people exist and we’re often too scared to admit what we truly are to others due to their own biases against our sexual orientation. I can understand disliking characters coming out as bisexual to an extent because I’ve definitely seen characters get slapped with the bisexual label just for more inclusivity before, but that’s actually not very common. I can’t even name a good example off the top of my head, but it’s a tiny portion of our representation. I don’t remember this comic/book very well from when I’ve read it, but i’m fairly certain this scenario is not an inclusivity act alone. This character is meant to be genuinely bisexual from the beginning. I don’t understand why it’s a problem, unless they’re just biphobic or something.

@fernthegreenfairy I think you’re smart enough to understand that although yes, male and female make two sexes, gender is not the same as sex, and that biological sex and the sexual attraction are completely separate as well. Sex can mean the act of intercourse while also referring to the organs, chromosomes, etc. Also, maybe don’t tell people what their identity is? Wicked odd. The Heartstopper books literally helped my 15 y/o cousin figure himself out and realize his feelings and thoughts were valid and he didn't have to hide from certain family members (most of our family on that side are not accepting, but I told him that just proves who his real family is) and he finally came out to all of us a few months ago. He dated a few girls because he was taught to by his womanizer father, but after I bought him the books when he asked me for them for his bday he started asking me about things and I made it known I was a safe person and I love him no matter who he loves and I'd answer to the best of my personal knowledge but also encouraged him to talk to any of his queer friends about it too, I know they helped him feel valid as well. He's now been in a very happy relationship with his bestie and the guy is a total sweetheart I love them both and besides his mom I'm probably his biggest supporter. He thought he had to choose straight or gay but after he read the books (and watched the show) he realized all of it is valid but it helped him realize he was bi. I'm so happy these books exist cause the fact that even helped one kid feel valid is a big win for me, I hope it helped more kids and also maybe adults figure themselves out. We need more media like this to normalize it, I hope I live to see the day no one has to "come out" and people can just be who they are. I myself identify as ace/demisexual, but I'm also okay without the labels for myself so I don't broadcast that. But anyone who needs the labels to feel like themselves then that's valid too. I feel like a lot of this is lack of education on who they're allied with, and lack of curiosity. I dont know if it just became a hyperfixation for me, but I did my best to learn about and understand the experience of every queer identity I met with before I even fully realised I was under the umbrella too. It's important to learn what the label could mean, and what the common assumptions are to respect and support someone. And maybe learn how to respectfully ask about someone's personal range within that label to undwrstand it better if they want to share that, so many labels are entire spectrums of variations. Some bi people like all genders, some like specifically 2, some like broadly most of them but with a sense of duality of expression that makes them notably bi, some only feel comfortable with one type of genitals, some are only romantically bi but sexually something else or vice versa. Some of these definitions also fit for Pansexuality, but they feel more aligned with the bi community in particular with no ill will towards people being pan. It's complicated, just like how language itself is. Yet, what we do is constantly broaden our vocabularies every day forever so we can understand and utilise it better!

My best friend still doesn’t like the show, which is fine, because it’s just not their speed. They like more fantasy themed queer stories. Not liking the show is totally ok, but people are so caught up in finding a reason why it’s bad that they can’t understand that they don’t need to. It’s ok to not like something.

I was constantly saying "I am straight actually", to me it felt frustrating that someone was trying to inject and presume my sexuality instead of just asking! It's really frustrating because you do want to be seen for who you are, not what people think you because of some outward appearance. Everyone just wants to be seen as their authentic self not by your personal view of them. Bisexuals want to claim their sexuality just like gay people because that's the truth of who they are.

Heartstopper is fantastic story telling. As an adult, it’s great fluff but also if you read the comics, sometimes it’s like the author is turning to the camera and saying “this is what healthy can look like and this is what unhealthy can look like” and I hope young readers read it and go “wow, I want that healthy relationship” or “you know, writing a letter to my parents about my feelings might be a scary but good step”. It’s not just fluff (I mean, it’s so cute) but it’s just a great way to introduce healthy queer relationships and healthy queer navigation. Lmao I’ll go watch Carol if I’m looking for a painful “realistic” queer love story but if the straights get to have cheesy rom coms, so do we 😭

I love that you started making Heartstopper videos just as I finished the show and books. But you are so right! As a bisexual it's so cool to see "I'm bi actually" because it makes me smile EVERYTIME and makes me wish I had that confidence. Plus you always see Charlie playing with his food/not eating when given food. Don't hate on my comfort show! 😤

I think the show does an incredible job at being a happy show by and for queer people. It's happy, sweet and sure, a little cringe ig, but it does balance it well with the darker themes and moments, not just about queer themes too (Like Charlie's eating disorder and self harming and Nick being stressed over school and having a strained relationship with his dad.) The show knows the struggles of being queer, and still it takes its time to show the happiness you also get as a queer person, it inspires joy and acceptance and I think it's a wonderful series

And also it has really great ace representation! It's one of the only lgbt pieces of media that does and it makes me really happy to see ace people being validated and represented alongside other queer people

First of all, THANK YOU FOR SPEAKING UP!! Second, I didn't realize how prejudiced people were towards bisexuality until I saw some of the reactions. And Finally, as a demisexual, I can relate. I have been called a "good girl" forever within my relatively conservative family because I didn't "hook up" as much as my friends. And while on the surface it seems like a positive thing, it really messed me up and it took me longer to understand my sexuality. 😢 The value of people being able to identify who they really are - this journey is really important for self-actualisation. It doesn't just impact their sexuality but it has a bearing on other aspects of life as well and most importantly mental health.

As a newly out Bisexual, Heartstopper is literally what got me to come out to myself and stop lying to myself after two whole years of denial. Also seeing the depiction of Charlie and his eating disorder made me realize that what I was struggling with was actually an eating disorder. I thought since I wasn't starving myself to be thin, that I didn't have an ED, but after that scene I researched it more and realized that it can take many forms. It feels so much better to be able to put a name on this thing that's been bothering me for five years, and to finally be able to research how to get past it.

I'm pansexual, and the erasure is awful... I finally find my place in a loving community, and they also tell me I'm wrong?? It's terrible to feel rejected by the people who are supposed to be your friends and help you be out and proud.

Oof the pan hate is real and so upsetting, I'm sorry buddy 💙 A lot of it comes from semantics and communication issues between the histories of communities too. The pan community does have a few early adopters who used it against bi people in a misinformed way (this notion that bi people are trans exclusionary, but pan people arent, which isn't generalisably true), but that does not define the pan community at all, and really needs to stop being the assumed position. Pansexuals are completely valid and are an important distinction thats really helpful for clarifying people's identities, it does not matter if there's overlap with other m-spec orientations. They very well belong with us, and the only thing stopping us from adding a P to the acronym all of you is the risk of it getting misassociated as pedophilia acceptance by the grifters, and that the acronym is getting a bit long and excludable (if you see LGB community somewhere, big red flag, they are transphobic)

Panromantic ace here and FR, it's so awful. Gay ppl as sometimes as stupid, hateful and horrible as straight ppl. Bi/pan erasure is stupid. I've the chance to be in a hyper open minded friend group (ally, pan, bi, gay... everything lmao). You'll find safe ppl, there are a lot of them, trust me. And tbh biphobic/panphobic gay ppl aren't a part of the community for me. They're exactly the same as straight anti-lgbtq+ ppl.....just some garbage and/or uneducated ppl.

When I first watched Heartstopper, I was in the process of accepting my sexuality as a young queer person. Knowing that I was not alone in the world and understanding that this was quite normal made me feel very relieved. It helped me accept myself and love myself as I am, so Heartstopper is very special for me. 🍃❤️

As a bisexual, I’m quite frankly not interested in whether or not a homosexual person thinks a bi character is “too much”, because it’s not *for them*. It’s not their representation. While any two queer people will have some things in common and that’s beautiful, being bi or pan is a fundamentally different experience from being homosexual, and I wish the rest of the LGBTQ+ community could just be happy for us finally getting some representation rather than critiquing a portrayal of an experience they simply don’t have.
