i understand that all the people in the comments saying they love your art and don't know what you're talking about are certainly well-meaning, but they also miss the point. i've definitely also experienced this feeling that i just know more than i'm able to physically execute, if that makes sense, and other people's praise doesn't really factor into it at all, because it's all about the frustration of knowing what's wrong with your art but not yet having the skills to fix it anyway all this to say, i know the feel, and i admire you for being able to see this feeling for what it is, temporary, and for taking a proactive stance and trying to work through it :) it always ends up getting easier at some point!

The art making process is such an import part of being an artist. To become an happy artists you need to be satisfied with the actual artmaking process. Are you enjoying the medium? Are you comfortable in your studio space? The next step is to objectively view your art in such that you want to try again and improve on the things you feel is still lacking a bit.

i thought exactly the same, the reality is that you have to practice, no matter what it is. i always thought challanges are fine, but they are always so temporary, chasing some trend that someone deemed interesting. in a way everyone can do it. so if we get to see studies , it rather shows the style and art of each artist.

Baylee! I took several classes with a professional Scientific/Natural History Illustrator. I basically learned how to draw from doing objective drawing of animals. I was EXTREMELY depressed over my art before I finally buckled down and drew animals from life, something about them is very cohesive to learning how to draw planes/drawing in general. Draw more shapes that you see INSIDE the image. I don’t mean eye/nose shapes, those are SYMBOLS. Focus on the ABSTRACT shapes created from shadows/highlights, changes in planes etc. By drawing in these shapes you will start to be able to visualize/draw the 3D planes that exist in a dynamic drawing. DON’T focus so much on the outline (at first at least). This flattens the image a lot. Start by drawing the thing that is closest to you (usually the nose). SLOWLY CRAWL your way through the image, drawing those abstract shapes that create visual planes. You do this LOOSELY. Once you have a loose and accurate representation of the image, you can go in and define the planes you want to keep, and which you can erase. Also importantly while drawing this way, you need to be able to MEASURE the distances between these abstract shapes in order to get an accurate drawing. You can do this by comparing horizontal and vertical lines on the image, or picking important points (like the eye, or a very distinct shadow) and measuring how many of those shapes are across/vertical etc. Also, it’s VERY helpful to draw from life ESPECIALLY if you are trying to improve dynamism in your work. Do you have a natural history museum with stuffed animals? See if you can draw from those. If not, try finding a very high def image that you can spend A LONG time with. Don’t focus TOO much on small studies. Find time to work on one image for at least 5+ hours on. Working and reworking that same image. I’m still learning a ton and definitely not satisfied with my work quite yet (especially my digital stuff... my IG is consuis if you want to see some of my drawings.) Hope you get to read this, good luck!

I want to clarify something you said. You mean find a hi def image and draw and redraw and draw it again in that five hour time span correct? not just make one image and just go ham on the details? I dont do that often enough, but when i do, its fascinating to see the changes and improvemetns to it.Even just one day to another resets your mind and you can pull back from it or refocus.

Think that other people see your art with a different eye, and think that art can be very rewarding too ! Honestly I always wanna give critique but YT just seems like the place where you shouldn't do it... ppl always get so defensive or the fanbase gets defensive for the yt-er. I'm gonna be honest (please don't lynch mob me) : You are one of my favorite YTers but you are not my favorite artist! I think when it comes to art I always felt a little bit like I don't learn that much from your drawing techniques because I have been drawing for so many years already myself... I actually love watching you for different reasons then just your art: I enjoy watching your vlogs & the behind the scene stuff! I'm always looking forward to watching the vlogs & art videos right when you upload them! Hearing you talk while I'm drawing myself is so entertaining/realxing to me! You talking about conventions, your shop & pins is not only fun but also really helpful! However I do understand that you wanna get better as an artist & I totally get the frustration because I feel every artist goes through this from time to time. I think if you would ONLY focus on improving your art and nothing else (which you obviously can't because there is a lot more to it, as you already mentioned) you could improve IMMENSELY within a couple of weeks! I'm happy to see that you are not beating yourself up over this but are willing to make some positive changes for yourself to improve your art, learn more & enjoy your own art more again! I'm so excited for future videos and what you come up with!

One thing that I think you could add to your improving series is trying and potentially failing at more ambitious projects - they'd be really helpful for you and more entertaining for viewers, I think. So, studies are great, but there's also something to be said for allowing youtself to try new things and take risks and experiment. *That's* how you improve beyond the fundamentals. You'll find things that dont work, but you'll also stumble upon things that really do. With your regular videos, there's not a lot of room to fail or be risky or push the envelope because you're trying to end up in a predictable place. But if you give yourself permission to not make "good" art or a "good" video, and just *try* things (even though theres a good chance they'll end in disaster), you can really learn a ton - far more than you could learn through creating 10 safer projects. Plus, people will definitely click on "I tried x and failed spectacularly". But it will take a *LOT* of courage to post failures. Just a thought. Side note, I find it really admirable that youre committing to improving your art even though you know better art won't necessarily further your career. After all, the subtle improvements won't always show in the crazier videos - your knowledge of, like, atmospheric perspective won't really show in "self portrait in hardboiled eggs" or whatever. Lol.

I appreciate this video. It definitely has a lot of truth. But I kind of want to touch on something? You talk about drawing in the evening but you just want to relax. I wouldn't feel had about that. I currently work part time for as many hours as I legally can and then I also am working on a project and then I'm also doing school full time. And to top it all off I do Sunday school once a week. Those hours in the evening where I don't do anything productive are what keep me sane. Like you said, KZbin is so much more than drawing. And you do so much in a day, I'm sure. I love that you are trying to work on your art and you are absolutely right about incorporating into your videos. Idk I guess I'm just worried that you'll try to over work yourself and I've been there and you feel so dead and it's not worth it. I'm sure you've got this! Looking forward to all the things you do!!

I've been watching you since ZkittyZ, I was super young back then, just getting into drawing, and next year I will graduate from Art Academy. You went to animation, I went to super academic university. I think that you are slow at drawing and you are not happy with your finished work is bassed on stiff slow sketching. Everytime I see you sketch, you focus a lot on either copying the refrence object as it is or you just get stuck on polishing details way too soon. You end up with composition, form of object that you are not happy with so no matter how much you polish your stuff it will never satisfy you. I feel that since your whole life is bassed on art you could take some art classes to take your art to the next lvl. It's time! But in your place I would search for a true academic pro. The one who would teach you how to see things with an eye of a master. That way loose, efective sketching will be easy. No more stiff, dull boring sketches! You are good at stylizing stuff but both- drawing and painting(coloring) could use upgrading. Pro teacher can give you that! I was stuck just like you, but now as I have my teacher next to me, I mix my own passion for animation and their tips and damn, I have never improved faster!

The issues of drawing too slow can be fixed by getting rid of the habit of doing little short lines and applying them next to each other. That was the first thing my teacher taught me - don't do "sketchy sketchy", draw a single line and guide it with your eye by looking back and forth where you want it to go. This makes you draw faster but also improve in abstraction.

Have you thought of maybe taking some online courses? There are so many great classes now from working professionals. SVSlearn is great, Schoolism has some good stuff. Taught by a Pro. Lots of great ways to expand your skillset. You could even do a "watch me learn" series where people can follow along with you. Or a weekly study group stream, where everyone studies the same thing and posts it to the same hashtag. I honestly wish more art youtubers did that sort of thing. Demonstrating what it takes to learn and grow and how much work is involved in that.

I used to enjoy my art years and years ago, until I joined Deviantart. The culture there taught young artists, and encouraged them, to actively despise their work. Being proud of yourself was as bad as using references. It took me a long time to get out of that mindset and going back to enjoying what I create. I will never be the best out there, never claim to, never aim to, can only be the best me, so I might as well enjoy the ride. Even works that aren't my best are still part of my journey, they've taught me things I wouldn't have known if I hadn't done it, which makes it special and great in its own way. Improving is a never ending process. You will both never be your best but are always at your best, until you get better. I think the "hate" is less about your skill level and more about how you think in general. There's no shame in loving your art, regardless of where you are in your journey. :) In any case, best of luck with your studies!

To help with anatomy and stiffness one thing I learned in art school is that drawing from life made me improve so much faster at drawing people than drawing from photos. Of course I get that's hard but maybe you could draw Christian when he's home or go out and quickly draw people around you, like quick 30 second studies ya know? A still image doesn't show you so much, life shows you how the body moves how it rests how people hold their weight etc.

Something I recently learned; I never appreciated my talent of drawing, until last year when I had a stroke. Now I would give anything to draw a simple straight line, even a simple doodle. But my right hand is gone, it won't work, and picking up a pencil is not possible any more. So no matter how you feel, be grateful that you can draw, even when you have bad days and aren't satisfied with your work because being without the ability to draw is pure torture. Your bunnies were really good. Your art work is too. Aside from having the stroke, I understand where you are coming from. I felt the same way. Never really happy with my art work, even when people liked it. But now, looking at my sketchbook from early last year, I was a good artist, even my doodle pages are good, but not being able to draw with the right hand, is now pure agony. And though I have tried to draw with my left, it doesn't feel right and it truly is awful.

I completely feel you on that Baylee! As a person who deals with depression and anxiety, art has ALWAYS been my outlet and it is usually nerve-wracking when I come across other great artists, it's often nerve-wracking to distinguish honest critique to other people (those who are more...advanced and more talented for example) who just are downright rude and point out the flaws instead of looking at the bigger picture. Growing up, I have had so many negative reviews to my artwork (circa. middle school on through high school/adulthood) that I have honestly lost confidence in being able to project what I felt deep in my core. I have to admit, at a certain point of my life, I was ready to burn everything that I've done art wise, because of how much I was hurting by the negative feedback. Not only has art been one of my outlets, it has been what keeps me going in life- Sure, I admit, I know where I can improve in (comprehension, details et cetera.) and I know my weaknesses too. I know that I'm probably rambling about how art has changed my life, but listening to how you feel about your own art makes you even so more raw and very personal. Henri Matisse once said, "Creativity takes courage," which is very much true; Listening and watching this video inspires me to not give up just yet. Listening to you talk about how being a KZbinr/KZbin Artist makes you feel is very humbling because I can only imagine how much stress it can put you under. Before I continue to ramble, I want to end this comment/rambling moment by saying that you're a truly courageous individual for projecting what makes you happy and sharing it with all of us. You better believe that Ksenia (kuh-sen-yah) here is going to stick around! Much love from Kentucky!

All she does is draw? Seriously? Did you not hear the part where she played video games every morning and afternoon for a long, long time? Or the part where she edits videos for hours? Or the part where she runs a business and online store? Not "all she does" is draw. Not even close. She probably isn't even drawing every day (not that she has to, at all, but she is hardly overdoing it in the art department). Professionals often draw for 6+ hours every day. She's fine - she's not overloading herself by adding a few hours of practice every week.

Hi Baylee, I hope you don't see my comments to be harsh. I have been subscribed to you for... I'd say over three years but I'm not sure exactly how long. I am an architecture student (recently graduated and I'll be starting internship in September) so I was busy for quite the while, but you really do inspire me to start my youtube channel. I have been wanting to make one for over six years but when I watch your videos I always feel like I just want o graduate already so I can start. I am an artist too and I try to keep at drawing every now and then but never have the time to record, edit, record a commentary etc. Anyways, I follow your vlogging channel but I remember you mentioned you were going to make this video on here so I looked for it. First of all I want to tell you what I do like about you. You are just such a genuine person. I feel like who you are is who we see through the screen. For real I really do think you area likeable person in real life and a good fun friend. I also like the variety in your videos and that you like to bring in new content every now and then. As for other comments, I feel like you rush your videos sometimes, or not do things to the best of your ability, just to get a video out. I may be wrong and I don't mean to be mean but that is how I see it. Like for the bunnies, if you spent the same time on less bunnies then they would look somewhat better and with time you will get faster. And this is just me but I also feel like a lot of the time you say things cost a lot, or are expensive, which I know is just you being real but it is a bit annoying because it gets repetitive and also we all know youtubers make a lot of money. Other than that continue doing what you do you will always be your biggest critic, look at your art from a few years back and what you have today, you have improved a lot and will continue improving so give yourself a break. I will continue to watch your vlogs and hopefully you can watch some of my videos (whenever I start my channel) and give me your own comments :)

Critique/advice; Your bunnies are very cute and you seem to have improved as you went on understanding their shapes and volume. I think these studies could also be used to break away a little on your line art style. Why not try the occasional floof or line break, or test out line variations. When looking at the bunny for reference, try thinning or even breaking the line where color is lightest/where the lighting is. And then thicken where the darkest areas are. That way you're translating the nice understanding you have of shapes into your line art. I think it would help the stiffness in the long run. It is totally normal to feel bad about your art and how you think you're improving. I just want you to know that it's okay to feel like that alright sweetie? And always remember to grow at your own pace, because that's how you improve for yourself, not for others. I personally think you're doing excellent with your art, and relate to how you can feel different about your art at different intervals of time. I like how you are also focusing on the areas you would like to improve, but please don't hate your art alright? You're doing awesome hun, and there's always room for improvement, for everyone! Keep going and never give up! Love, a fan ♡♡♡

This series is going to be so fun! I'm especially excited to watch you improve with males and anatomy! For the bunnies something that I learned when drawing them is that a helpful guide is for the eyes make an upside-down triangle shape from the nose to between the ears, then draw the eyes on the sides of that triangle, it helps to get that look of them being on the sides of their face instead of forward facing. They have a very odd face shape that's hard to get! XD

I think incorporating your practice into your videos is a fantastic idea. I've heard from a few other art youtubers lately that they feel themselves stagnating with their art because they feel putting out content is more important than actually flexing their skills and I definitely think a change is needed. The artist experience IS practicing to improve so making some of your content about that to me seems like a very genuine, cool way to relate to your audience. I'm very excited to see what you come out with!!

( I really loved juicy ink’s sketchbook series ) because it just kind of gives the vibe that we’re all sitting and improving together. Personally when I watch art videos I draw, and it feels really good to have someone going through the same learning and hurdles as you are. I had a teacher at my higher education, my paint teacher, where I really had a good vibe with. At some point, we were talking and came to the conclusion that it’s okay to be never satisfied. Yeah, it’s torture, but we will only get better. When I was in my last year, and I was reaaaaally struggling with my exposition, I actually used that struggle. _But_ because of the struggle it’s duration I only had like 3 weeks left. So now the problem was that I was not liking how it looked _at all_. But I had to think back to the conversation, and I just started. Because even if I ‘had more time’ I still wouldn’t be satisfied. And I actually told that told the teachers who were grading me at my exposition (which my paint teacher wasn’t part of), that I ‘will never be satisfied with my work but it’s okay’. They were literally shocked, haha. One actually got a bit mad (not in a bad way) because that’s not a way of living. Nah, I like it. No, I won‘t be satisfied, but I know how to inprove. That’s the point of artschool in the end right? So one day I will create my masterpiece!

@@Im_Banana_ Well, yes, but actually no. If you're a begginer having how-to books or trying to copy someone else's style can help both your understanding of anatomy and you developing an art style. You can't exactly wip it out your butt, afterall. Also, have you considered animators? The animations we see, know and love aren't made by one person; it's basically a bunch of people trying to copy the same art style. I'm sorry if I come off as a little agressive, but rather than shooting people down and telling them that copying someone else's stylr is downright WRONG, I suggest trying to explain them how to use it as an oportunity to grow and develop. (But that's just my opinion. I ain't a pro)

actually, looking at how other people interpret reality is a great way to improve! reality is hard to replicate, man. the key, though, is to find inspiration from lots of places! it's not okay to just copy one art style, yes, but there is so so much to learn from other artists! especially if you're just practicing, you don't need to keep to a definitive "style" of your own. you have to be careful about that, cause it can limit your creativity and growth! always look for inspiration and chances to evolve! :)

@@Im_Banana_ Actually it's good. At least in my opinion, learning other peoples styles can teach you how to draw from life better. For me it has helped me be able to draw what I see like drawing Gorillaz stuff and drawing in their style and drawing in the Rick and Morty style. You can also see how different people stretch different proportions. And as someone else mentioned, animating, if you want to be an animator you HAVE to know how to copy someone else's style. You can also take pieces of someone else's style and apply it to your own, say you REALLY like the way they draw eyes, you can do yours that way. if you like the way they color hair, give it a shot you might really like it.

I mean I straight up copy other artists art because I'm a beginner, I'm not good at taking what's in my head and transferring it to paper yet, I dont have an art style yet, and nobody sees it except me. I'll be so happy when I get to a point where I can draw from my head and have it turn out how I want and be super proud of it. Replicating others art in the beginning of learning really helps you figure out how things are supposed to look, what you like, how other people draw certain things(like eyes or a nose), and I'm learning angles and how to draw people. I've never been good at that. I have been practicing with drawing from references but for some reason they keep coming out more realistic then I like. Imitation is the biggest form of flattery

I'm kinda stuck in the same boat with my art and animation but feel a little too down to do the push just yet but it was nice listening to this and knowing I'm close to the push along side you! I love your bunnies overall personally but the one at 16:35 (the red one) has a big forehead and blobish shape which kinda reminds me more of a human baby then a bunny at first glance, haha. It could be the way the bunny is actually shaped in the reference but I feel the forehead is a little too tall/big and that's what's giving that impression to me. It might also be that the ears are short and it's selling a bigger forehead too. That being said, I really love the ones at 16:43 (the one eating the carrot) and 16:59 (the green fat one)! Something about their mushable faces and body shape just screams smol bun to me! I'm super excited to see the studies you decide to do!!

💡💡💡A good idea for the studies would be taking 3 days.. the first day keep the references nearby and draw them over and over.. the second day look at the references before drawing, then draw as best you can remember. Then after you can look back and fix what was right/wrong and perfect it again.. the third day don’t look at any references and see what you remember & how well you do! This will also help commit it to memory bc you’re forced to pull it from your memory.. and doing it 3 days in a row instead of just one day will help with that too!

What helped me with my sketching - both with overall quality as well as speed - was beginning with drawing the whole image in super loose shapes. Just figuring out where each piece basically is, and then after that going back in and doing more refined detail. You may also find it easier to translate more detail if you referenced pictures on a screen where you can zoom in and really see what’s going on. And, the best piece of advice I’ve been given for drawing was looking at your reference image way more than your own paper helps. Breaking each part into individual lines and shapes rather than seeing an eye and having our brain say “I know what an eye looks like” and drawing what we think we see rather than what is actually there.

As an art teacher, this is definitely part of being an artist. I see it with my students DAILY - some are uncomfortable with art in general, but the "artsy" students are hyper-critical of their own work, sometimes the point there is nothing I can say or do to help them feel better. It is something they have to work through and at a young age, they dont always see that they CAN work through it. Just know you're not alone, Baylee, in the artists' plague ❤

The thing that helps me the most when looking at my own art is trying to figure out what flaws I see, and picking one or two to work on at a time. Trying to remember everyone has their own way to learn is also important when trying to push yourself to become better. One thing that a lot of artists should try before finalizing a sketch is how does it look if it's mirrored / flipped vertically! Your posture when you draw can really skew the proportions

I totally get it! I do indeed think your art is stiff looking. Drawing from life, giving yourself a few minutes to lay down basic shapes without refining anything would help a lot!! Try to start simple, since you seem to be used to overworking your lines. Try to experiment more! With that i mean get bigger paper (A2 or A1), use more supplies (preferably thick ones like charcoal and crayon so you don't get a chance to work precisely). Good luck!!

None of us are perfect at anything in art and you know what you need to improve on, and that's great. You should never be afraid to make art, don't think of if at something scary, but rather as a challenge that you want to best. Like doing the same level in a game until you get a perfect score! I agree with your criticisms of your art, but I think you can and you do overcome them in certain artworks. I love sketching and making loose little drawings, but I could never commit the time and effort that you do in inking and colouring. Your colouring is amazing and your sense of colour is top notch. You could turn the art improvement series into a community thing. Like at the start of the month (or maybe every 2 weeks), you could say what you’re going to be working on, like gestures or planes of the face. Then you could create a tag on Instagram or somewhere, so we can all join in too. That way it’ll help every one to be accountable as there’s a whole community out there taking part in this with you. I’m in the same place as you, I really want to improve my art, but after a while I joust go back to what’s comfortable, but if there was a lil community like this, where everyone is in then same boat trying to improve, I think it could be really helpful and motivating ☺️

When I watch you sketch it's quite clear your problems with art all come from the same root- you don't really draw from life, especially humans, and you don't build the shapes inside the objects, which work together and against each other. You just draw the outlines without trying to understand why are there. Were I you I'd find a good teacher first to train you in basic skillset, but you previous stated that learning art in art schools is bull and you were against the regime they introduced. So you suffer now for it by concentraiting on "style" instead of substance of thing that you're drawing.

Hey, since you welcome critique, instead of focusing so much on the outline and the silhouette of your studies, I think it'd help you understand the structure of the bunnies (not just the skeleton but also the layers of fur etc) if you drew the shapes that make them. Because if you look at your drawings, there's absolutely no lines inside the outline of the bodies (and I think that could help with the stiffness also).

Adults are growing out of these challenges type videos and want more meaningful content -- and adults are the people that can contribute to your work outside of ad revenue. Post studies! Post your process! Your learning journey!! We want videos that are genuine and with soul. Meaningless content will very soon not be "trendy" in the art community, so it will help your channel in the long term to switch the focus a little, and of course it will help your art. There are only so many "only two markers!" Type of challenges we can watch before we have seen them all. Imagine how many young artists you can help in their future career, too, if they can see first hand that even professionals need to study and practice fundamentals!

Hey, Baylee, it's great that you've decided to dedicate some time to improving! We can all improve, no matter where we're at. I used to be a professional artist, but had to switch careers because of changes to my eyesight. I've been following you for a few years and here are a couple of things I've noticed: The biggest things I've seen, as you mentioned, stiffness, flatness, and anatomy. I feel like improving anatomy will go a long way toward fixing the stiffness, so I wouldn't worry too much about that at first. Anatomy is HARD so don't feel bad about it. I struggled so much with it in college and I then still did my best to avoid drawing people, because I was just never good at it. Your compositions are good. Your drawings of scenery and objects are really good. Don't feel like you're not a good artist, it's just that there's the one area that needs some work. Everyone has areas that need improvement. Your marker work and coloring skills are also good, just push the value range a little farther, to add more depth. The camera and flowers illustration you did a while back is a good example. It has a lot more punch to it compared many of your other pieces. Without a strong value range things tend to look washed out and flat. So even if it's more pronounced in the drawing than it is in real life, that's sometimes how far you have to take it to add visual interest and get it to really pop off the page. Good luck, and keep drawing! You got this.

You said that you want to help loosen up your line art and, one thing that I found to be really helpful was learning to Ink with a brush pen. The Pilot Brush Pen, Pentel Art Brush Pen, and the Zig Cartoonist Brush pens are my favorite to work with and you can get them off of JetPens for less than $10USD each. (Also Shipping shouldn't be too bad, I hope). For gestures, in college, we had to fill up 10+ pages a week of Quarter sized gestures for our Kinetic Anatomy class. Like our teacher would literally place a quarter on our pages to check the size. Working from photos can be nice but what I found to be both fun and more informative was to do frame by frame of dance videos. I'd find any 'So You Think you can Dance' performance or audition on KZbin and just frame through it using the '' keys. I'd draw a straight line on my paper and draw the gestures in sequence, trying to capture both the gesture as quick as I could while also trying to keep them in proportion with the previous ones. This was super fun and something I was able to keep up doing for a while. To help with working with shapes more, our animation teacher in college assigned us to fill 5 pages a week using just one shape. One week was circles, another was cones, another was cubes. We could only draw those shapes. You were able to squash them, stretch them, play with them in perspective, or build more complex things but you could only use that shape. I hope that helps. It's always great to hear an artist talk about what they struggle with. I know some people take it as an attack on their own art, but I've always found it to be more relatable. I know I'm not alone for only seeing the flaws in my art. So, thank you for making videos like this.

I do it in front of the TV or during loading screens or anytime that I’d be doing something else with my hands. Honestly I end up with a lot of ideas from doing this, and if I like a doodle I can cut it out and stick it in my sketchbook. Obvs this is just something I find useful idk if it’d be good for others. I've been feeling this way on n off for years about my art... I see it as a sign of rapid improvement. Instead of staying in one place being satisfied with our work, we notice more and more flaws that push us to tackle these issues right away and move forward. Practice practice practice is probably the oldest (and most overused) saying in the art book (lol), but it's the truest statement to live by. So tedious at times, but essential for improvement in anything. I wish I had as much patience as you do with drawing...I simply sketch one thing and I'm done for the day lol, takes me so long to complete my art. I'd definitely enjoy watching your sketch/study videos. Remembering your older videos, I can see you've come such a long way with your artwork; you've improved so much already! And I know with your determination and effort you'll improve so much more soon enough. A little tip that's helped me sketch more loosely, is to just relax and sketch without the intention of it turning into something good. Just genuinely letting loose and fooling around on paper, sometimes it actually turns out to be a great loose sketch that can be furthered into a finished piece. When my drawings turn out stiff, it's usually when I'm getting so caught up in trying to get my ideas down perfectly line by line (intending for it to be a great finished piece), but just let loose n scribble a bit. It's relaxing, fun, and gets us in a care free mood that could help us draw more loosely. Excited to see more from you, you're so inspiring💖

Same! I have a list above my desk of all the things I want to improve on. If you have time, research Quentin Blake's drawing technique. He's the master of expressive characters.

Girl, im in a slump as well. Im in an area where i hate anything i make. I know the capabilities i have to improve and make such better work but it feels so unattainable and far away. Like im not improving. Like no matter what i try to practice on and do better, just feels like a waste because personally i dont see anything worthwhile. This video definitely helped me be a bit more positive about my outlook on the situation. Its temporary, and im always going to fall into a place of not doing enough no matter how much skill i build. Love your vids girl, keep drawing and keep giving us honest, straight from the heart content! ♡

(This is a longer comment, so strap in) I would love to see this series. I want nothing more than for people to actively take steps to improve their art. So yes! Please! Moar! :D First of all i know what you mean about wanting to improve your drawing. But, to keep things positive I'll share my two cents. I think every artist has things that they naturally excel at and things that don't come as easily. I can tell that you have trouble with stiffness and form/structure, but you know what? You have absolutely nailed a consistent aesthetic with your style, your floral designs are beautiful (and very flowy!) and your understanding of color and copic blending methods is really outstanding. And overall, since you are acknowledging the parts of your art that need work and taking steps to improve then you're already a better artist than some. As for an honest critique of your bunnies I would say that you've nailed the tricky shape that is the ear and how it connects to the head. Referring to what you said about leaving some gaps in the line work, I feel like anything with fur or that is fuzzy (ie. an object that doesn't have a hard edge) can really benefit from gaps in the line work. Having small, broken parallel lines going along what would have been one connected line can trick the brain into thinking it's looking at a softer edge. ANYWAY, I hope all that rambling whatsit I just typed made some sort of sense. Your determination and discipline are inspiring so keep on going! Whoot!! :3

I graduated from illustration 4 years ago and I am nowhere near being done learning. I take evening classes all the time in different things and I find it extremely helpful. It’s usually once a week for like 3 months. I have done classes in comics, children’s book illustration, figure drawing and more, I like trying different things. I am just not good enough at holding myself accountable for learning a new skill and I find that learning from a professional artist in person is often better than watching youtube videos. I’m not saying it can’t be done, I just find that it works better for me. I also find a change of scenery often good, I realize that this is not great for recording a video but going to a cafe or park with a sketchbook can be refreshing.

Stiffness is something that I struggle with alot in my art, I just wanted to share some exercises that really helped me! 1. Draw BIG. If you can get some cheap wallpaper and stick it together to form a huge sheet of paper do it. Draw bigger than life size. Doing this will force you to use your whole body to draw and really help to loosen up. (If you wanted an end product, maybe try making a cardboard cutout of a charecter!) 2. Use a medium that forces you to be loose. Oil pastels are what I've used in the past for this because I find it hard to create detailed drawings using them. Knowing that the small elements wouldn't matter it allowed me to feel more comfortable being a bit gestural 3. Draw from life, specifically the bits of life that move. Drawing something like your cats would be great practice as you have to deal with the animal moving, and you have to adjust for it! This again forces more gesture

The beginning of this video says so much about the art culture/community. I think it's justifiable to simply want to improve yourself and others shouldn't feel bad because of that. We all have our artistic journeys. That being said, I also feel guilty at times for saying to others I want to change my art- to get better because I don't want to step on anyone's toes. So, it's nice to hear others be honest with their struggles. Plus it's awesome how you're actively making a point to do it and to share why you want to do it. I think your to-improve-upon list is something that most artists want to keep getting better at and I hope that with these changes to your schedule, the dedicated time to draw can help with loving your art again. It's so important to be happy with what we create.

I love this! I think this is a wonderful idea and I wish more artists would do series like these on KZbin! For me I've always valued studying over the final product when it comes to art, and I think that's help me improve faster than if I was to only paint/draw when I wanted a final piece. Filling up sketchbooks w just studies of hands or feet or the skeletal system is imperative to improvement. Also I'm in art school right now and one of the best quotes I've ever heard from a peer is 'practice doesn't make perfect, perfect practice makes perfect' and she was so correct. You could draw the same thing over and over for months and not improve because you're not focusing on the actual form or line or anatomy. I think for critiquing these I'd say maybe start inward? Like instead of doing the bunny, do the skeleton or muscle system of it instead. I feel like you're art looks hallow sometimes, especially in your animals where I don't get a sense of life because I feel like I don't see a gesture of the muscle of a leg or a bone and if you added that it might make it look a bit more realistic even if it's still a cartoon drawing. Being able to take something from the real world and stylize it pleasingly is so difficult sometimes and it's still a struggle for me personally. I love the placement of the sketches themselves in this, also your line quality is great! And so is the light shading which gives it a bit more depth Please continue this series id love to watch you improve in the months to come!

It's always good to see a big artist be objectively critical of their art. Too many people either just roll with however the art turns out or are too harsh to themselves and whine more than they actually work. For future video ideas, maybe some nice expressive gesture drawing? Could even be draw-along type of vid
