Honda lawn mower HRR216VYA. I do not like this lawn mower after over one year of ownership. I explain in the video. Walmart had a Briggs and Stratton electric start self propelled lawn mower I wanted to purchase. Problem was a waited a little too long and that style of mower was discontinued.

SCraig 2018 Hmm. I wonder why. I have never had a clogging problem, and my yard looks larger than your yard based on what I saw in the video. I suppose it could be a few factors such as mulching wet grass. That can clog, but I can’t seem to find any other cause of clogging.

Oh, the HR214, for 30 years, incredibly durable machine. My current one smokes at cold start but once warm, the machine runs relatively clean. It needs to have a hole patched next to the transmisssion and soon needs a new bag but it has been a very reliable machine. I grew up with one too that used to mow some fairly high gradient hills out in the country. I may say they were, in some areas, more than 20% and that machine continued to run for another 20 years after the first eight or nine. Well, I have to admit it sat for five years with a clogged carburetor but one cleaning later, it fired to life and gave me another three seasons before ultimately being scrapped as I learned a bit about small engines repairing that machine and probably would still be running today if I didn't take it apart and messed with it. I have two other Honda mowers, one being an HRR216 that needs some work and an old polymer (NeXite) bodied HRM215 that I absolutely love as a mulching machine. Neither of those machines have a drive system which sucks, but are relatively light to move. At some point I want to replace one of these two machines with a Honda HRC2163HXC (known in the States as HRC216HXA) and also have a side discharge elbow. Right now for side discharge I use an old poly snow pusher blade as a deflector and the bag door held open by some channel aluminum.

Mulching 100% of the time. Mulches incredible I was buying a new one each year from wearing them out (wheel gears), now use honda commercial with wheel ratchets. But other than the wheel gears the home depot honda mower is a great mower

The tiny bit of grass that gets into those spots for the bag only happens when you run without the bag. And only take a literal seconds to clean. It's a 21" mower that's pretty normal for a push mower. The blade engagement bar almost takes no effort to hold. I have the same one and the newer model of this and I'm very satisfied they fixed all those issues. The handle is taller now the shoot doesn't build up grass in the bag clip area so bad unless you cut wet grass. And the handle if firm. They ditched all the adjustments for the drive blades and rpm tho. I used some rubber stick on seals and closed up some areas on the new one and it suvks in all the grass better now and doesn't flings dirt and grass out the holes.

I didn't like the "Smart Drive" at all when I first got the mower. It took me a while to figure out where to put it, too. Once I got used to it, though, I've noticed that I now mow one handed more than I ever have. 180-degree turns are almost effortless, and the wheel always seems to land exactly where it's supposed to for the next line. It may be that it's because I'm probably shorter than you are. Mine also has three holes for the handle height and I use the middle hole. The other piddly things I just take care of as they happen. You think that there is a lot of grass in those little holes under the deck. Just wait until you change the belt. There will be dried grass in all sorts of places that you never had on any other mower before. The one thing that I really don't like is the amount of dust that comes through the bag when bagging the grass. I won't wear a mask for the C-virus, but I will for the Honda bagger (if I don't want my sinuses full of mud). I have no problems when mulching but once I switch to bag, I mask up or tie on a bandana. The cut quality is my favorite part and is better than any other mower that I've ever owned or used over the last 50 or so years that I have been dealing lawn mowers. A reel mower on short Bermuda grass may be slightly better, but I don't have Bermuda anymore. In my yard, a reel mower leaves too many long stems. The Honda doesn't care what type of grass it is. It'll cut any of it good. Have a great weekend!

I have this same mower bought it brand new 3 years ago. I have not been very happy with it either. Mainly because the drive wheels do not roll backwards very well and there was a service bulletin about it but when I took it back to the place I bought it they would not repair it under warranty even thought it has a 3 year warranty. I have sales receipt and it has not been 3 yrs yet. I also hate the grass discharge out the rear right at your feet instead of the side. The wheel are small and don’t get much traction being made of plastic instead of rubber. I do like the roto stop and throttle control but that’s about it. I don’t understand how they can refuse to do a warranty repair when there is a bulletin and it’s still under their 3 year warranty.

@@SCraig-Handsome My HR214SX can be pulled backwards and has a 2 speed transmission. Actually, rolling it backwards is probably better for the wheels than pushing it forward when the machine is off as the ratchets engage the drive shaft and the drive shaft rides on two ball bearings. Now, the transmission, on the other hand, may not be so happy. Not that the wheels really wear out pushing forward as I have only had to replace one set of wheels on the HR214.

The "thumb paddles" found on lower-end model Honda mowers are not ergonomic and probably Honda's weakest feature. Even when adjusted, I was unable obtain a satisfactory hand position. Honda GVC 160 engines are much noisy than even more powerful Briggs & Stratton engines thanks to Briggs excellent mufflers. I've also experienced both hot and cold starting issues on a Honda, as well as carb problems.
@WJCTechyman
@WJCTechyman 4 жыл бұрын
@@BadfingerFan It depends on the model of mower, some Briggs engines could have pancake mufflers that make a lot of noise or go to higher end units and they could have mufflers that make the machine sound like a sewing machine next to a commercial axial fan. Honda's made some pretty quiet mufflers for its machines, so I don't know where you get your information. I have seen the build quality between Honda and Briggs mufflers...and other components and Honda typically has better build quality. Sorry, that's just what I have found.

I used to have the previous version of that mower. I agree about the handle issues - the wobbly handle was annoying, and the bolts that hold it in the holes were weak. I ended up drilling an extra hole to raise the handle. I also didn’t like the SmartDrive lever because it was uncomfortable to use. Other than that, it was a good mower and I used the hell out of it. I literally used it until the wheels fell of - the front bracket broke off and could not be fixed. Replaced it with a Honda HRX with blade stop and hydro drive. It’s much better.

Concensus can be, and is often, wrong. While Honda lawn mower engines are very good, they are not the holy grail the brand-dropping crowd perceives them to be. Case and point: My Honda GVC 160 engine was under powered when compared to my Briggs & Stratton 173 cc engine. The Honda was harder to start in both cold or hot conditions. On the other hand the Briggs & Stratton engine started easier, had more power and was far quieter. Quieter, thanks for the nice, ear-saving muffler. Honda, on the other hand, minimized their mufflers on their GVC 160 and GVC 190 mowers. Buy a briggs & Stratton 7.25 hp or more engine and find out for yourself. Your ears will appreciate it.

It's a good mower and, even if it's been neglected (like his was), can be brought back up to do a good job again. But my favorite is the Honda HRX217 with the SmartDrive. As I said, I didn't like the SmartDrive at all at first. But once I got used to it, it's so easy to control the speed you need for the different mowing scenarios. And the two-blade setup has such good cut quality, whether I bag or mulch. I've got to where I use the grass from the bag to cover seeding in bare spots because it's cut so fine and uniform in size. I also use it in my compost pile for the same reason. I've never had any mower cut as good as that one. Take care and have a great weekend!

@@tinkerscorner54 thx, here we getting hammered by rain so my weekend was spent inside LOL. I really wanted to know how the honda dual blade stacked up to the gator. Was at my local shop the other to ask about hardfacing. Wanna modify my gator a bit. Is the smart drive hydrostatic? Bcoz ive had a chance to use a cub cadet rear wheel drive. My mower is not hydro and if i lift the back wheels up to turn it i risk damaging the teeth in the drive wheels bciz its a solid axle. But the cub cadet was hydro, the wheels can spin independently. Friend of mine told me i shoulda buy the cub cadet 4 wheel drive mower but at that time i was under the impression that it would b 2 solid axles like my brute. I will b honest tho, i wont b in the market for a new mower. I dont know if i mentioned it but i did make a sacrifice this year to buy a brand new briggs engine. Same line as the one i got 190cc, but its the more powerful profesional series with ohv putting out 8.75 ft/lbs. When the season is over i will reluctantly install bcoz the current engine, everytime something happens to it and i fix it, it keeps going. I mean, its astonishing. Its the reason why i bought a new briggs.... anyway, one more question: your honda, what its displacement and torque? More to the point: its iron sleeve, do you need to warm it up b4 using it? I don’t like mine either. There is wayyyy too much resistance pulling it backwards and it leaves divots in my grass. I pulled the whole transmission and rear axle apart thinking that something was wrong. It turns out that the design just inherently has a ton of friction even at ‘rest’. I like the rear discharge and the cut it great. It’s not great for mulching. I have spectacular grass and I mow twice a week, but it still drops huge clumps of grass all over the lawn. It might work excellent on thinner grass.

The new lawnmowers are pure junk nowadays, whether you buy it from walmart, lowe's, home depot, tractor supply or ace hardware. My uncle has a lawn boy push mower which is basically 20 years old and John Deere garden tractors (most of the tractors are over 30 years old) and did not even have one issue with it. The older mowers (up to the 1990's) are definitely a lot better than any new mower, whether honda, lawn boy, briggs, tecumseh, john deere, wards, or sears, and whatnot. You can also look around for a vintage 1980s Lawn Boy 6261 for 50 bucks that is still in perfect condition.

An honest review the way i see it. If honda still made an aluminium deck mower i would have bought one. Why wont i buy a second hand honda? Well basically only the commercial companies use them, and theyre used every single day. They get run into the ground with untold hours. Indeed many honda mowers i have considered buying, needed a full engine rebuild purely from use and the asking price was damned near what my brand new briggs DOV mower cost. I own 2 very old briggs mowers, a mk1 quantum and a mk2 quantum, one 30 years old and the other 34 years old. Both still run perfect and cut perfect but high hours are getting to both of them, mainly the mk2 quantum from 1990 with over 1000 hours of use. Most parts for both mowers are very scarce. Engine parts not too scarce but i doubt many places will even know what the mk1 quantum engine is anymore. Found it hard enough to get an air filter box for it

Excellent review. I owned a very similar Honda mower with the NeXite deck. When you state that the cut pattern is a bit narrow, I know just what you are thinking. The Nexite desk is huge in width and extends far beyond the 21" blade. It is frustrating when the wide deck prevents mowing near fences and other borders. Also, the mower requires more storage space than just about any other 21" lawn mower on the market. Why have such a space-hogging mower with only a 21" blade? The control "thumb paddles" are not ergonomic. A moderate amount of thumb pressure is required at all times in order for the self-propelled feature to engage. Even when adjusted for user comfort, none could be optained, due to poor designed and limited adjustability. This is probably the mower's biggest flaw. Honda chooses low restriction mufflers for both their GVC 160 and GVC 190 motors. Maybe some people don't think about the health of their ears, but believe me, Honda mufflers are a big fail. Compared to the mufflers on Briggs & Stratton's 190 cc motors, there is no comparison in terms of noise--Briggs are much, much quieter. And while we're speaking about sound, I never liked Honda's drive mechanism's clicking sound. It click when the mower is rolled, even if the motor is not running. My Honda's handle was very strong and rigid, so rigid, that it transferred all the bumps and vibration to my hands and wrists. Honda was the only mower that made my hands feel numb. My Toro Super Recycler's handle was not as rigid. However, the lack of rigidity helped to insulate the bumps and vibrations. Honda has a fuel shut off, which is great especially if you must tilt the mower. As with all lawn mower engines, including Briggs & Stratton, the mower should only be tilted with the carburetor side up. So Honda gets a point for having a fuel shut off valve. I agree that the Clip Director isn't that great and must be cleaned out, but it's still pretty good. Most of all, avoid cutting wet grass. Yes, the NeXite deck's underside bee hive/waffle openings can be a problem with debris and moisture. In addition to usng a honda gvc 190, I've also owned a Honda gvc 160. The 160 was noisier than my briggs 190 cc. The honda had both common hot and cold start problems and needed a carburetor rebuild, while the Briggs still starts on the first pull when cold and was never worked on. My Super Recycler was easier to roll than the Honda, plus, it didn't make any of the annoying clicking sounds. The mower was smaller, yet still employed a 21" blade. There really are no perfect lawn mowers, however. Toro Recycler's have excellent, intuitive controls but have far weaker transmissions. Much to my disappoint, Honda lawn mowers are a let down and did not live up to my expectations.

1. That thing on the handle wasn't a Briggs design, its its whatever mower manufacturer your talking about. It sounds like the EZ walk from Husqvarna. 2. Grass builds up on any mower, you gotta clean that off. Flick of a finger for the bag holders. 3. The carburetors are located in the same spot, Honda and Briggs. 4. That back area with the holes is the mold from the factory and for added strength. 5. Its a standard 21" cut mower. Its the same size as any 21" cut mower size wise. You go back to referring to another mower as a Briggs. It had a Briggs engine, but what mower are you referring too? 6. You go back to saying maybe Briggs had a patent on the other style drive lever. The mower isn't Briggs, its whoever made the mower. Lastly, if you like your other mower better, why did you sell it? You say this one cuts nice. Your right it looks like it does. If you don't like this one, sell it and go back to another one that had a Briggs. Tell us which mower that is, because the mower isnt a Briggs only the engine is. The new Briggs push mower engines are crap, they have plastic carburetors, their generally toss away engines now, but if you think thats what you want go back to one. Briggs is currently in bankruptcy keep that in mind as well.
