This is the 3rd time I’m doing Dave’s baby steps… I thought it would be easy getting rid of bad habits and behaviour but it was not.. I stayed on track and then I would get sloppy and lazy and go back into debt… But I think this time I have it… been at it for 2 years now and by April 2025 I will be debt free once and for all!!!!! And I’m never going back.. it’s been damn hard… but I’m sick and tired of being sick and tired!!

Nursing is tough. I have been a registered nurse for 27 years and worked in various specialties including hospital nursing. Dave is so right it can be at times very stressful. Like he said it is hard on your back and feet. I suffer from low back pain and have had several bouts of plantar fasciitis through the years. She should definitely volunteer and see if she really likes the field before she takes on any more student loan debt.

Dave, thank you. As a nurse, I cant tell you how many people want to go into it because it pays well. And it does. BUT let me tell you, you work HaRD for that money. I have a lot of arthritis and back probs from my years as a pediatric nurse not wanting to wake parents up and using poor body mechanics. It can be gross. And depending where you work, you may be floated to other departments working in areas that include people who talk back at you, spit at you, throw their urine on you, etc. But if you fall in love with the field, it can also be one of the most rewarding. I had my college degree in marketing/public relations and worked in the field 10 years before going back to school for nursing in my 30's. I didnt have the pre-reqs from my under-grad or they were too old, so essentially had to do 2 years part time (while I worked part time) to do the nursing school pre-reqs. Then I went through a JC Assoc of nursing (ADN) program. Many hospitals these days prefer a BSN but I've been fine with my combination of education. Then to get into nursing school, it can be super competitive, so you have to have stellar grades. I wish this caller success.

As a retired RN in Critical Cre units, CCU, ICU, telemetry units, medical-surgical units.....it IS hard, heartbreaking, stressful and sometimes thankless work. Burnout is severe. Sleep disorders arise (I have one), stress related ulcers, staff enemies, and administration conflicts are real. Never spend thousands of dollars on this line of work unless you are prepared for all of that. Dave is right, volunteer and ask questions first. Are you prepared for 8, 10 or 12 hour shifts and back to back doubles? I would go home after 12 hours, have enough time for an hour of TV then go to bed for another 12 hour shift. I'd go over the shift in my mind to see if I could have done things other way and also there are your favorite patients that die are dying and you DO get personally involved. It does happen. I worked for over 35 years before I had to go on disability for my back and sleep disorder.

Sometimes we go about things the wrong way and we end up realizing it too late. First, stop relying on your feelings (i.e. hate, dislike, passion, this job is not the real me) about your job. It ain’t a hobby. It IS what pays your bills! Second, have a logical plan and a goal for when you decide to leave your job. Going to school to “get ahead in career” or “to earn more money” doesn’t guarantee you’ll get ahead or get more money. You’ll just incur more debt actually. So this time around use your brain and think about your next course of action instead of letting your feelings rule your decisions. Pass your GED, don’t leave your job if you have no other better paying job to replace it, save money to go to a community college for an associate nursing degree, which can be a pathway program to a 4-yr nursing degree. There are programs like that but it’s very competitive. If you’re not committed to the very end and run away at the first sign of hating the degree you’re taking, you’ll get into a huge student loan debt. Nurses earn a substantial amount of pay in exchange for 12-hour shifts and unholy amounts of stress, if you’re “hating” your job now for being boring and doing desk work, simply “loving kids” ain’t gonna cut it in that profession. THINK FIRST.

RN for 25 years. My thoughts: Start out as a CNA- you should have minimal dollar and time investment to do get certified as a CNA. Work as a CNA - find a place that has tuition reimbursement. Get an associates first at your local tech school - same RN degree as the expensive bachelors. Work as an RN and move towards the specialized NICU nurse while working as an associates degree RN. I worked my way through RN school as a CNA for a company that paid for my tuition. I think I paid 400 out of pocket for that degree. If you talk about this career goal with other nurses they will tell you a similar story. Good luck!

That’s a question I’ve asked myself ... how much other people don’t like their work. The reason is, I was raised with the family belief that part of having a good work ethic was about doing it and not being a complainer and giving it our best. Being called “lazy” was a VERY big insult in my family. Relatives perceived as that - and as not thankful and as “entitled” - were not respected and even talking about hating work was seen as lazy, too, (or at least, that was the message.) I have often wondered how it works with others and how they honestly feel about their work.

I would just take the GED test and see where we are first. Then, if you need more for GED, then do that while continuing to work. Also, look at your company, they may help with education. My company paid 90% of my MBA degree, and all that I had to do was pass the classes, to be reimbursed the 90%. Some companies have these programs so you should take advantage of this.

Watching Daves vids for a few months to remind me why I work. I have debt and now about 650 euros left to pay off. Have a new job lined up as forex portfolio manager and can't wait to just blast through the babysteps with the new salary ❤ If I had this job 2 years ago, the money would have either killed me or I would have bought rly stupid things instead of saving and thinking about the future. Thanks Dave much love

Moonlighting the NICU is a good idea to test the waters. I'm in a different field of Virtual Reality and 3D modeling. I love PART of the field I am in, and would pivot to teaching if the money weren't so scarily low. I like helping people grow. I like mentoring. I like watching people discover their own strengths. I like working with people that can have higher level conversations about our field, and I find myself stuck working with people that have very low interest in growing. It's like they have been waiting to retire for 20 years, while I was growing my skills the entire time, and the last 10 years has been me figuring out that they find my growth threatening, and it seems so weird. Why couldn't they have gotten a job that was simple, rather than gatekeeping others.

Nursing can be an emotional strain which could also lead to mental strain, ESPECIALLY in NICU. I have a cousin, on my husband’s side of the family, who was a NICU nurse for 30+ years. She had 4 children, the youngest two were twins. Her husband worked weekdays, she worked in NICU on weekends (36 hours @ full time wage). That’s what worked for her family. As a young girl, growing into a young lady, and mature adult, the LORD “prepared” her heart for what HE had planned for her life’s work. She followed the LORD’s Plan, and even though, there were very difficult emotional times, she “stayed the course”, and the LORD blessed her tremendously. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻❤

Once you are over the age of 18, you do not have to have a high school diploma to attend college. You don't have to take the ACTs or SATs either. There is a test you can take in its place, each college has their own.

I started nursing school in 1965 at age 18. Now retired RN after a long career. If you are not called in your soul to this vocation, do not take on nursing. It is exhausting work and poorly paid over the long haul. Your health will suffer. Sometimes our pay would seem to catch up for a short while, but then the staffing would be cut to the point of patient endangerment. I worked NICU for 7 years and it was exacting work that included major heartbreak. You need a strong internal core to deal with the emotional and spiritual aspects of caring for the ill and dying.

In Socal and maybe elsewhere she can find a community college with a (very competitive) nursing program, taking a full load. Then transfer to 4 yr state college for 1 year to get her RN. Don't know what further training is needed to qualify for NICU.

This woman needs to really consider how hard it is to become a nurse. I've been a nurse for 31 years. Thanks to God and my Dad, working 3 jobs to put me through school. I had zero student loans. It's hard, taxing to every part of your body, new things every year that you have to take classes to keep up your RN license, the license has to be paid for every 2 years, the price keeps rising, and this is not a 9 to 5 job. You leave when the job is finished . My brother has been a nurse in the burn unit for about 6 years. He has $70,000 in student loans. You don't have to go to a big university and spend a lot of money!! I went to community college and have the same title as my brother. Be smart. Consider all your options, if it's not a calling from God, then don't do it.

My advice to this lady would be no matter what start working towards getting the GED..make a plan and budget put up with your job until the credit cards are paid off…get your CNA license..for free there are plenty of jobs that will PAY for her to go back to school to become a RN especially the hospitals so she’ll have no debt.

She could go to a community college and get an associates in Nursing first. I teach English at a 2 year school with such a program. It is quite competitive to get in and nursing students are excellent at academics especially the sciences and writing. If the caller wants to go into health care there are so many excellent programs (even radiology and cardio technicians) that aren't expensive and lead to good careers. And they have fast track GED programs too.

I'm glad Dave discouraged her from going back to school. It amazes me how many people have a student debt and a low paying job or a job they don't like and their solution seems to be to go back to school. Maybe I'm wrong but that just seems like a really bad idea to me. Keep working and pay off your CURRENT student debt before you consider adding to it. Also, if you have a job that requires additional training, usually that company will pay for your additional schooling so she needs to settle into something she loves and THEN look around for schooling to help her advance. That's my humble opinion.

NICU nurse here.. while I love my job and I'm really good at it ---NO 6 years to get there not worth it. We are overworked and underpaid. I've been at the bedside for 14 years and staffing is the worst I've ever seen. Assigments are so heavy I see new nurses burning out so fast. I'm at a level 4 so sickest of the sick. I'd rather have some sort of flexible work from home job at this point in my career

Truth. My baby was born at 28 weeks and was in a NICU for 3 months. I cried everyday and life felt so hard being in a medical setting that long as a parent and seeing so many distraught parents and tiny babies. And I was one of the lucky ones who took my baby home. It was an overwhelming experience that still brings tears to my eyes. The nurses were angels and I will never forget them. I can't imagine working there all day every day. I suppose many of those nurses are nearing retirement 25 years later.

She does not want to work. She has this idea of a "dream job" but the reality is that she would rather go into debt and tell people about this wonderful thing she says she wants to do than work. BTW- in 2 years (after high school) you can be an RN, but most RN programs are demanding and she doesn't seem like she's into demanding. Learn to "love" (whatever that means) your current job and pay off debt. When that is done, figure out the next step.
