I’ve always loved AC Origins, but it’s been about 5 years since its launch and so I decided it was time to go back and give it another shot to see if it holds up. Turns out, it’s still amazing.

It's a real shame they didn't give Bayek a sequel. To me it felt like a logical next step, the story was competent enough to warrant exploring more of his future, not to mention the cliffhanger of him and Aya, where they both decided to dedicate their life to a new creed, potentially showing how Bayek helped start the foundation for the Assassin's. For some reason they really don't want to flesh out characters over multiple games anymore. Which is unfortunate.

One big thing that was missing from both Origins and Unity was spinning thread! People used to have spin thread to make clothes all the bloody time! One of my most memorable/satisfying moments of my play-through of origins was getting my ass absolutely wrecked in Origins by the phylakes in the early game, and after grinding to around mid game to level up and get stronger slowly taking out more and more of them. @@nicolot4652 In my opinion, both games compliment each other extremely well. You can't tell me the combat is better in Origins, it's not, to make that claim would be a joke. On the other hand, you can't beat ancient Egypt, you would think, but Odysessy has the most beautiful ocean waters and the sharks and a beautiful reef. Origins is mostly desert, or city surrounded by desert and when you are lucky, grasslands. Odysessy has beautiful vegetation and really is the better looking game, the DLCS are insane bro, you have no idea! One of the DLCS is okay, without ruining it, it's dark and looks kinda like hellish place. The other DLC is the most beautiful vegetation in the whole entire game, it's mind-blowing.
@nicolot4652
@nicolot4652 Жыл бұрын
@@vision821k4 I agree, I just finished both dlcs and the story, plus the new maps, are excellent. Persian dlc's story is kinda cringe but other than that it's good. I've spent 60 euros for both games plus all dlcs for both games, it's the same money I spend for that shit game called fifa every year. I know it's because those games are old and Microsoft always give them away on sale, but it's still something to take in consideration. Old Assassin's Creed were bugged as hell, but Origins and Odyssey, despite the giant maps, have very few bugs and every little detail matters; I like to follow npcs after i end my missions, and their actions are most of the time coherent with the storyline. Odyssey it's not an assassin's creed though, you can jump off a cliff and not get damage, or rush into forts without even caring about stealth and kill anyone in a 10 vs 1 with the right abilities. Those maps are breathtaking, when I first played Origins I was speechless, but as you say it's mostly sand, just like it's mostly mountains and sea in Odyssey. Both main stories are really good, I was kinda bored by Origins ending which was in my opinion rushed and stupid in some extent. Another thing I'd like to compare is the isu messages and enigmas... In origins it's excellent, I've discovered so much "unexplainable" stuff and I have those "abstract" thoughts as well. They tried to do the same things with Aletheia on Odyssey but it's not even close to Origins. Best games I've played since GTA 5 in 2013

@@nicolot4652 I read everything you said, and on my critique of origins, I was going to mention what you did though, that origins does have more stealthy game-play and is more fun in that respect. And for soccer games, I prefer Pes, lol. A game I know you would like would be Horizon New Dawn, I play on PC and there's no second game release, but the first was awesome. If that had been an Assassin's Creed release it could have fooled me, despite the machine part. Horizon New Dawn feels it was made by ubisoft, has towers, too lol

The world in this game is just on another level. The attention to detail and the way the team depicted the people's habits, the way they worked, the accuracy of the maps from a historic point of view..ugh so good. At one point I was just strolling around a small town and stumbled into some npcs painting portraits on some sarcophagus, went around the spot and another npc was dyeing fabrics, preparing salt and various herbs to embalm the dead ones. Then googled about it to find out more and found out everything actually existed. It was related to the Fayum mummy portraits. A mix of Greek and Egyptian naturalistic portraits where the two cultures clashed and brought up something new. That's just one spot on that whole map. The discovery tour is gorgeously made too.

Ubisoft has some incredible talent. Their tech, engine, and artistry really is top knotch when they want it to be. And I’ve always had a guilty pleasure for Ubisoft titles and own most of them. If they could just get the corporate stink out of it and let their teams really make something, they could come back to the acclaim they once had. They’ve just felt like kind of an assembly line company in recent years where the games look and play great, but have an air of mediocrity and underused talent about them. Maybe we’re just getting jaded to the type of games they’re capable of, I mean any other studio would kill to have a steady string of games that look like their games and have as much content, and there is a lot of minute detail even in Valhalla that we just kind of take for granted from them now, but it’s lacking a feel of any passion. Valhalla is an incredible looking game full of content and detail. But it just reeks of averageness. Like there’s nothing special that makes the experience rise above. I don’t know, it’s hard to explain. The fact that they have cranked out 3 massive scale open world AC titles, 3 Far Cry games, all the associated dlc, and games like Rider’s Republic in like a 5 year period is kind of nuts. And maybe it is just that lack of focused production that makes the games feel passionless. But man, if there was ever a face of tech and talent that is being underutilized to feel underwhelming, it is Ubisoft right now. They have the capabilities to make an incredible game. They just need focus and maybe to just let their teams lean into creativity rather than cranking out the next game off the assembly line.

I feel Ubisoft has always been underrated. Like Watch Dogs 2 was a damn masterpiece IMO and I enjoyed it better than GTA V. The open world in WD2 was insane. A lot of their genes do have a similar gameplay loop but at least you know what your going to get with them. All the worlds they create are top draw. They have the man power and resources to really give a company like Rockstar a run for their money if they invested it into one game and really took their time.

When you think about it, it is not just a torch, it is a gameplay mechanic that was very useful and they made it useless through the games by making it worthless to use. When you downgrade something like that, you do it mainly for perfs. And when you play games where night is dark and your tool to see is worthless, half of your experience is very affected. If it is just a torch, then it wouldn't have been mentionned in videos like this one for being a positive in a game.

I agree with you completely, Sylvain. I think you're right that they tweaked it to reduce system load. On Odyssey with the shadows on the highest setting, whipping out the torch doesn't touch performance in the slightest. It generates a wimpy, kind of ugly flame effect and has minimal influence on shadows and lighting. In Origins, it's a completely different beast. The flame effect is a lot more complex and its influence on shadows and lighting is a lot more pronounced. It's beautiful to behold, but man is it a system-hogging feature. When I had this game set to 4k on my computer with shadows on the highest detail setting, pulling out the torch would cost me 20% to 30% of my frames per second. At 80% of 4k resolution with Shadows on the high setting, I'm okay. So yeah, I'm right there with you on this. :-P I can't fault Ubisoft Quebec for tweaking the torch in Odyssey to save on performance (especially given the amount of plant life to render in Greece compared to Egypt), but yeah... it was a shame to see it downgraded.

A few houses in Alexandria have beautiful interiors. And the npc animations are amazingly detailed, in this one shop there was a npc using a pestle and mortar I watched the animation for 5 minutes straight before it looped.

I love these games. I remember the 3rd one in Colonial America just blew me away and it was so awesome to see what the cities looked and felt like to live in during that period. Been playing Origins the past couple weeks and it's gotten me all into Egyptology now. It's incredible to think how those Pyramids and stuff were already in ruins and were ancient by the time of Cleopatra. I'm gonna play Odessey next. I hope they do one based in feudal Japan one day and you can be a Samurai or a Ninja or something one day.

Main story really decent for an AC game, Bayek's a good protagonist. Side quests for the most part are lackluster content fillers. The two DLCs are worth it if you like the main game. The open world is absolutely phenomenal, not just the best out of all AC games but one of the best of all time hand down. Graphic wise beats almost every game of 2021/2022. Gameplay felt fresh compared to before and is fun enough, though it lacks in diversity and the AI is dumb as usual. Overall, definitely one of the better open world games to which I return periodically just because the world is breathtaking.

I used to read books of greek myths in the library of my school, learning almost every detail of the gods and goddesses of that culture. It became a dream come true to finally experience all that culture in a videogame (It was actually my first AC game, so I never knew of the stealth system of earlier games). AC Origins is currently on a free weekend and it's brilliant! The weird thing for me is that I literally just finished the AC Odyssey main stories an hour before the free weekend started, although I only found out about it a day later! What I like so far, apart from the obvious presence of a useable shield, is how similar it looks, feels and plays like Odyssey, which I know is pretty obvious given that Odyssey is the sequel and pretty much set in a similar time and setting, which you can tell by things like the weapons racks, scaffolding etc, so I have taken to it straight away! It was very clearly made before Odyssey as there are things in Odyssey that have been improved, like the armour, weapons and abilities screens and an easier to see map and it's easier to see loot and stuff without having to use the Animus Pulse all the time plus you can make your own save games. The one thing I love about Origins so far in particular is the Bayek's Promise quest involving the Egyptian constellations but am kind of surprised there wasn't a similar quest in Odyssey given how all the constellations we use today are based on Greek mythology, unless it was included and I missed it. Anyway, my entire life is now going to be devoted to playing Origins until Monday and then it'll be back to starting the Lost Tales of Greece in Odyssey until I get the new PS Plus pass at the start of July when I can continue with AC Valhalla, which I started on a previous free weekend, but tbh I didn't enjoy as much as I thought I would but that's another story.

Just hearing the Origins theme fading in at the beginning of the video gives me pure goosebumps...and wants to play the game again for like the 5th time

I really appreciated you taking the time to point out the bias inherent in how fans approached Origins/Odyssey/Valhalla in terms of personal fondness for the period or setting of the game. The way you feel about Egypt is how I feel about Greece, which is the big reason I love Odyssey so much. Whenever I think about trying out Origins, I stop short because I already have Odyssey and it scratches that same gameplay itch on a deeper sentimental/emotional level. But I may still have to grab it one of these days, since the story in particular gets such consistently high praise. Cheers!

I love Greece more than Egypt but I have to say they did a much better job with the world in Origins than Odyssey, it felt so surreal. I wish they could have done more for the Odyssey map.

The atmosphere in this game is something you experience only once in a lifetime. I through RDR2 had the best setting and atmosphere but after playing AC Origin it easily became my favorite game . It just makes you feel almost as you were there at that time. It's just amazing.

I disagree about origins atmosphere being as good as rdr2, just because of how insanely interactive the world is in that game. Literally everything reacts to multiple different scenarios accurately. Did you know arrows can split other arrows and will wobble more or less based on the surface they hit? Also, if you shoot things like rock or brick the arrows just bounce right off

@@tonyflamingosucks6590 You are talking about the details in RDR2 and no doubts it's the most detailed game ever created. It's a masterpiece and I played it like 3 times and couldn't get enough of it. Now what I meant in my comment is the atmosphere AC Origins gives you so you would feel like you are really living these moments. From sound design and world creation to the really well designed NPCs routines. For me this is the thing I was searching for. A game that really lets you dive in its atmosphere and experience things as if you were there at that time. I even didn't rush the game because I don't want this thing to end. Been playing it for like 4 months and I am not even half way through. At the end of the day that's my opinion and ofc not everybody would feel that way ;)

@@Bulker26 I’m really glad you enjoy it so much man, it’s been a few years since I’ve played it so I’m saving up the money to buy it right now. Ive been having that exact same experience with rdr2 again lately too, except it’s only been 3 months for me 😂

@@tonyflamingosucks6590 Glad to hear that 😁. And the thing is I am very invested in ancient Egyptian culture and that's why this game just hit that itch for me that has been just sitting there in my soul for years. And hey if you play on xbox or pc it's on gamepass right now. If want to own it I think there are some cheap keys you can buy from enba or other sites for like 6€ or 8$. No need to pay 60$ 😉

I definitely agree Origins is the hidden gem of AC universe and when I played it I didn't get it until I played the following games and wow Origins was definitely an amazing game and I'm with you why didn't Ubisoft keep that great foundation they created with Origins and build from there.

I've only recently started playing these games for the first time, the covers never stood out to me enough when I was younger to justify getting them. I have been absolutely mind blow by literally every game so far, purely from a historic aspect like you mentioned, before playing AC3, I wouldn't have cared at all about colonial houses and buildings in colonial America, now I do. I never really had any interest in visiting Paris or London, now I do. I couldn't have imagined the construction possible by the Egyptians and Greeks but I am completely and entirely fascinated for nearly a hundred hours in each game so far.

I just hit the 100-hour mark on Origins (with 100% completion) and am still going back for more. Such an incredible game. I also loved the DLC because I was hoping some mythological elements would be tossed in (beyond the Animus glitches).
