With artificial grass fields becoming so common these days, it's still surprising that all of the football boot brands haven't made a bigger push with AG specific stud patterns. They make them, but availability is nothing like the FG options. With that said, I've got my hands on all of the current AG stud pattern options from Adidas, and I must say, it seems like they're getting a little lazy!
In today's video we take a closer look at the Adidas X Speedportal.1, Predatoe Edge.1 and Copa Sense.1, all with AG soleplates and stud patterns. How much do they differ from the FG versions, and are the truly worth it over other AG options available from other brands? I'll share my opinion of course, but I think you'll also be able to judge for yourself. There isn't much of a difference...

I love Adidas, best of the big 3, but their current inline boots are trash. Edge is unwearable, Copa has no leather, Speedportal is inferior to Speedflow.... now these bad ag patterns on the Edge and Speedportal... just sad. Hope the replacements will be much, much better

What is also very disappointing is their step-down variant of their current lineup, like the .3 speedportal. They just stitch the upper material with the fabric. Unlike in the previous Ghosted or Speedflow models where it has a smoother transition from the upper material to the fabric.

This is why I went back to Nike for AG. I wanted to get the Speedflows, but by the time I went to order them it was an out of stock situation. Nike has been good to me with their veloce ii ag-pro model way back around 2016 as well as their vapor 13 pro AG. Just got myself a pair of the vapor 15 elites as I also wanted to try the Zoom tech and can't wait to get them on the turf!

I would recommend Pumas MG stud pattern on AG pitches. Nikes hollow AG studs are probably the best in the Elite range of boots. New Mercural ZOOM AGs are really good if you get blisters or struggle with stud pressure issues.

The AG stud pattern Adidas was using in the Copas 17.1/18.1/19.1 was the best stud pattern for both AG and HG or dry grass FG. Such a disappointment when they change something great for the sake of change while making it worse.

It’s weird that they wouldn’t be more different because you’d have to make new tooling to get that new stud pattern so they had all the leeway in the world to change it.

I appreciate your honesty here. I was really happy to see that Adidas was selling the AG version of the Speedportals here in the US, but became very disappointed when my daughter tried them at the store. They felt basically the same as the FG version. To be honest I don't see any difference in the size/height of the studs between them. Way too aggressive for artificial grass. Too bad the Puma Ultra for women no longer comes with conical studs. Hey Nike, it is time for you to start selling your Elite AG boots here in the US!!

thank you for mentioning injuries about using fg or sg on ag. I tore my acl playing that way and learned the hard way. Can you play with turf shoes on ag or vise versa and what reallyi is the difference between ag and turf. kind regards

Acording to Nike their Tiempo Legend 9 Academy version can be used for both AG and FG. And it is cheaper. I will take their offer

I bought Vapor 15 Academy AG and they are amazing on AG pitches. But looking on Elites they are sooooo much better in terms of safety and performance and overall usage on AG. Especially with zoom unit and rounded studs. I had Adidas Speedflow.3 TF and got several blisters from them, neither on Vapors.

Hey Josh, I’ve had a hard time finding AG shoes here in the US, top end at least. In 2015 it was easier to find AG-Pros from Nike however now you have to get them from the EU. Anyway I was wondering if you could do a play test/comparison on using TF shoes on AG? I have TFs but since TF is more flat and like carpet I’d like to hear your take on using TFs on AG pitches! Since Tfs are easier to obtain

TFs are fine on both turf and the carpet like surface. The only thing is on turf you have less bite and grip which isn’t necessarily a bad thing… but I like a bit more traction on turf than TFs offer, which is why AG soleplate dare so nice. Idk feels like it helps me push off more. The whole AG thing being exclusive to Europe is lame but you can still get them.. they just make it hard for us to get them 😢

I started getting soreness under my right toe after we moved to AG two weeks ago. I do use the usual Nike AG soleplate on the Phantom Vision, so I can’t really make any improvements there and I just have to hope the soreness goes away.

Might be worth trying some turf boots if you think the pain is being caused by stud pressure 👍

I have the ag version of the speedflow and the the main reason a picked it is because it works good and also if I wanted an ag pair of vapors they are hard to find and when I finally found them on Nike they wanted 320 bucks for them

Puma Future Z are pretty good for AG. They're rated by Puma as FG/AG and they fit the bill for a boot with a good all around stud pattern.

Imo, adidas doesnt make good boots anymore, predators supposed to be best leather boot ever but instead they completely took it out and made the same with X, then only copa were made out of nowhere instead of focusing to develop on classic series. To me, good old predators with tounge, leather and blade stud are still the best boots. My last predator was ace 16.1 but was tore after sometimes then i get Freak it never feel the same so i've changed to Tiempo, and i dont feel like i will be wearing the freak ever again

I personally think the studs are on the longer side for use on AG. Stability could be an issue, but stud pressure will likely be a problem long term.

I have these. Great cleats. I recommend them for natural grass. They are ok on new artificial grass. Don't use them on worn out, flattened artificial grass.

Long overdue vid. Appreciate your honesty Josh. Makes no sense why adidas would go away from their ag specific soleplate. Although I own the speedflows ag this is one of the reasons why i moved away from buying adidas cleats. I only wear phantom ag's now I find they do a better job on both fg and ag. Although i dont why the new mercs have blades in the heel in their ag variation so not sure how that is safe. Once nike stops making the ag plate that they make in the phantom I guess I will stop buying boots.

Ahh. I used to be pretty anti-Nike back in when I was 12 or so. I was in the Adidas camp back then, wanted the original F50 Adizero so bad back then. Up until the incredible Vapor 8 at least, they blew teenage me away. Like 75% of my collection and rotation these past 10 years have been Nike.
