I USED TO HATE OUR HOUSE, then I did this... | Valencia Artisan Leather L-Shape Sofa
The couch we have: heyshayla.com/couch
Yes, I'm telling you to be "content" and not in a bad or "settling" type of way, but in a grateful for what you DO have kind of way, and also a work with what you've got (and what the budget allows) kind of way!
I was constantly wanting a bigger house, and then one day decided to flip the script!
Be CONTENT = be grateful.
We transformed 2 spaces in our home, the living room by moving the TV above the fireplace, adding a new couch (heyshayla.com/couch), and changing one wall to board and batten! We really wanted a cozy place we could all hang and host people.
The other space was our backyard (video tour here: • Tour Our Kid Friendly ... ) The outdoor space was REALLY important to us, so we added a sandbox, swing set, trampoline, climbing dome, fire place, hot tub and cold plunge (heyshayla.com/icebarrel) OVER SEVERAL YEARS as the budget allows.
I know this might seem like "are you REALLY being content, and in one way no, but in the other way yes! We're making our space work for us and ENJOY everything we have. Do we need all this stuff? NO WAY. But we're loving it.

I love this! We're in a 2 bedroom apartment and expecting our first child. My husband works from home so the baby will be in our bedroom (no nursery) for the first 4-5 months. I feel bad that we don't have a bigger space, but we're also so lucky to have a clean, beautiful apartment with a swingset right out back, walking distance to the park, a clean and safe pool, a brand new elementary school that's walkable, and friends nearby. Just because it's not what I grew up with doesn't make it bad!

Love this. I haven’t seen anyone talk about contentment, it’s all about what you should buy to be happy and it messes with me. We have a great home and I blame the internet for making me feel like it’s not enough 😩 trying to reframe my brain from “I need more space” to “I need less stuff”

Keep the wood burning stove!! I’ve had one growing up and if you vent it right, it shouldn’t smell in the house. If nothing else, if you keep wood around you can use it if the power goes out - and that is everything. Way better than worrying about freezing in the winter!

Great Video!! Love all your rambling content but this one is excellent. My husband and I decided nighttime was not working with our 4 yr old and 10mo so we made a family bed in what was a second kid bedroom, turned our master bedroom into a movie room (gonna get a projector!) and our oldest’s old bedroom into a dressing room with all 4 of our clothes in it! It has been the perfect change for us and we love it!

Im 38 weeks pregnant, have a 1.5 year old n have been nesting in our little 3 bedroom house, I've been so annoyed about how nothing really fits together, we are always in a tight budget and almost everything has been purchased used but right now im so greatful my sweet babies have a warm and cozy home to spend the winter in. They have their own bedrooms, lots of cheap little presents under our 6 foot tree n they are thriving, healthy little girls. Im extremely greatful for my life. Thank you God❤

Oof this video is EXACTLY what I needed right now. I have been in that same headspace for ages, constantly browsing properties we just can’t quite afford… Having kids (mine are 2.5 and 1.5) makes you realize how much space you don’t have 😅

My husband and I literally just got back from going to see a possible house, and our realtor text us that the owners just accepted an offer. The housing frenzy is just blowing my mind. House prices are sky high, and intrest rates are high too! It's just such a crazy market for houses to be going so fast. We both love our current home, we just don't love our neighborhood, and and we don't have enough space for our larger extended family to get together. I think we'll be staying put a while longer, still feeling grateful that we were able to buy into a house before the market went insane.

@@heyshaylaNot sure what you’ve read, but we love our wood burning fireplace so much! We had a chimney sweep come look at it, and they said the proportions are just right to use it safely without building up carbon monoxide. Just make sure you ALWAYS burn with the grate closed and glass doors open, and leave the glass doors open overnight after a fire. No, it doesn’t get too cold, the chimney should be designed so smoke and everything wants to go OUT, not let the cold air in. If you’re nervous (like I was) the first time you burn, you can crack a window across the room to allow good airflow. But our living room is big enough, it doesn’t need it. It’s so cozy, and our toddler loves it. He just knows not to touch the fireplace. We extended that rule to always, not just when there’s a fire, so it’s not confusing.

I love that you can lock into a low rate in the states for a long time. We have 5 year terms in Canada. It's a guessing game what you will be paying when the 5 years is up.

My sister sold her house with a 2.8 interest rate so she could buy a bigger one 😢 but they can’t afford a bigger one… I frankly love my 2 bedroom apartment. I have a toddler and a baby due in June and having already had a house… I’m looking forward to just having everything right HERE. In one spot. We are pretty good about material possessions so our space works well for us. It sucks not having a yard. It sucks not being able to upgrade our space due to renting. BUT having the knowledge of homeownership not being what it is cracked up to be is a huge gratitude booster. As you say, Upgrade what you have and stay put if you have that beautiful old interest rate 😅

I used to hate our house. I drive an hour to work. I would love to not have to do that. But we refinanced at 3.25%. Now we have to stay here forever. And they built a wonderful park and trail down the street. It’s all give and take

Your house is so pretty. My house basically has to be completely gutted to get where I would like it. My husband picked it out before we were married. He didn't look at it with a family in mind. We're doing some renovations, but it's taking forever.

What a great video! I've been wanting to change up things at our place to make it more homey and this was the perfect watch. Your living room is so cute!! I can totally understand being hesitant about the wood fireplace. But what I will say is that my parents have a wood burning stove and the heat and light that comes from it is so soothing and peaceful. Definitely worth looking into if there's a way to use it that you would feel comfortable with because it would be so lovely! Thanks for the great video!

I could live in a smaller house but I really want more yard space & outdoor privacy. we live in a nice neighborhood, nice house, but there's just a back deck. moving neighborhoods for my son's middle school in the spring and they have bigger yards over yonder further from downtown.... yay. Had a rough day, and yes this comment was pointless and unhelpful but it made me feel the happiest I have all day thankyouforlistening

It's crazy that you always post a video EXACTLY at the same time as I'm dealing with something. First baby in summer 2020, then second child 21 months later. Questions about #3 (we decided not to but loved that video), and now this. We just decided we are staying in our house. We are going to add an ensuite bathroom and potentially make an outdoor office tiny house space to have a better work-from-home situation. If we do all the things we'd like to do it will still cost us way way less than moving. I had no idea how much it costs to buy and sell. We are in Canada and spent over 40k just on realtor fees and property transfer tax. Not to mention the actually mortgage payment almost doubling. Anyway here's to contentment.

Don’t you have to renew your mortgage every 5yr or so in the states? In Canada you can only lock in rates for typically 5yr ( some people do 3yr). So eventually everyone gets hit with these high interest rates.
