I met you a while back loading poles down in Louisiana. We had a short conversation but you really came as a genuinely good, humble guy. My two cents, when I have feeling like this, I take time away from the truck and focus on me whether it’s a week or a month. Take a break. I enjoy taking my family on small mini vacations, seeing their smiles reminds me of why I work so hard. I also decrease my trucking radius to minimize the amount of nights I’m on the road. I may not make as much money but my overhead is extremely low. I run my truck but it’s does not run me. Best wishes.

The biggest thing I like about driving local is I get to sleep in my own bed even if it's only a few hours a night. I sleep in when I'm on my 34. The 2nd thing is I don't have to eat truck stop food, but the bad thing is I still eat on the run. One thing bad about driving local depending on how some of runs are, it's sometimes hard to budget time to stop for fuel, because you hate to go there when it's busy and you don't have much time left on your clock.

I spent 10 years in the navy (special operations) and when I got out I worked in a coal mine for 11 years 12 hrs a day. I’ve always wanted my cdl because there are always jobs in the trucking industry. I have a 3 year old boy that I love very much and I don’t wanna be away from my family for long periods of time but I want them to have a decent life. My plan is to hit the road for a year and get my experience and then get a local job. I just hope I’m making the right decision based on me having depression. Oh and I’ll be going through SWIFTS academy lol. Hope that’s a good choice. Thanks for being real brother.

I drove OTR cause I wanted the experience, and I adjusted to the lifestyle, then got out before my health was effected. It is a lifestyle I'm standing by that statement, you're not talking to a novice. OTR is living in a truck, living on the go, living for the job, so yeah it's a damn lifestyle pal admit it or not.

I personally deal with this as well and wanted to share some tips that have helped me along the way. This is still a daily battle with me and will most likely follow me for the rest of my life. 1)Something that has helped me is to learn to love yourself including those faults. Depression and anxiety is a negative but it is also the very thing that makes me a perfectionist, hard worker, and strive for success. 2)People tend to give a big sigh of relief when you talk to them "real". Trucking is full of people trying to be macho and better then other people. It's a breathe of fresh air when someone can talk about stuff like you did. I find the more real you are with others, the better circle of friends end up surrounding you. 3)If you are becoming a truck driver or thinking about taking a leap into being an owner operator. Understand that if you have depression/anxiety it is going to test you a lot. Rushing to get out of the door so you can make sure your on time for a delivery Monday morning after barely having time for your family. Truck breaking down in the middle of nowhere. Months where nothing is going right and everything you touch is costing you money with your truck. Problems at home but you can't be there to help. This is all stuff that will wreak havoc on you mentally and you've got to take time to nurture your mind. 4)I for one have times where my anxiety and depression get the best of me. I've had to learn to make big decisions slowly and make sure I'm thinking clearly. Realize these faults and how they affect your business. Then put yourself aside personally and think about how your mind is affecting the business.

Good video my friend. That’s why I tell people get your finances straight so u can live. People have to learn how to simplify their lifestyle because if you don’t it will keep u a modern day slave to the trade The idea is that you do not want to fall in the trap of working just to make money. The more you earn the more crap you buy, a bigger house, a nicer car that is more than your yearly salary etc. And of that has to be maintained which takes more money and then you will want to upgrade which takes even more money. So u then reach a point where u need so much money to keep everything going and eventually you crack and it all falls apart. If we learn to live more simply with less stuff we would need far less money and could spend our lives in a vocation, of which we love doing, with far less stress. Depression comes from your surroundings and the people u be around and what u put in your mind like watching the Media, Negative and Dysfunctional ass people talking about their problems and who’s going to be the next President and your mind takes control of you then it takes control of your emotional behavior and then your mind starts to race and u go into a depression state. Think about it what ever junk that u put into your mind that’s what u will get. You are the one that controls your mind u are the one that puts one feet out and one feet in. The man in the mirror is a mans worst enemy. The only way to fight depression is live your life like u are going to die tomorrow because once u leave this world it’s no coming back ,it’s over.

It's something I've wanted to do since I was in high school, and I'm finally taking the plunge now that my kid is grown and we've got some money in the bank. The issues you address here have been on my mind every step of the way while I was researching this career. Thanks very much for this video, and everything you do to inform new drivers. Thanks to you and content creators like you, I'm able to go into this with my eyes open. Take care, brother.

I can relate. I don't have a family but I have a goal. When I get discouraged or things seem to pile on me with hardly any room left to breathe I slow down, park the truck, turn off the music, take a deep breath, and think of nothing but my goal. Stay strong my friend.

Ive always suffered from being depressed too. Went OTR for 1 year because I felt like I couldn't make money for my family any other way. (I started driving at 22 and I have 3 kids) . I'm local now but wow the wave of emotions i dealt with. Wife left me in that amount of time. Came home to nothing. I'm local now and the toll it took on me in the amount of time really terrorized my mind. Couldn't imagine where I'd be now if I would have stayed out. Hats off to all you guys we all know the struggle, everyone can think we are paid tourists but its a lot more than that.

What three years OTR did for me - crazy high cholesterol, a1c 10.1, blood pressure elevated, weight 285 lbs . Its taken me 9 months off the road to lose just 30 lbs and my get my blood work near the normal range, its all still in the red zone (just barely). And I have always eaten pretty healthy. My number one recommendation: walk 30 to 45 minutes a day without fail. Power walking even better. And Fix your diet = oatmeal is way better than anything else for breakfast you need the fiber to help absorb cholesterol. The trouble driving all day, you never want to stop and walk more than five or ten minutes. Better for me to come home every night, use my home gym, eat a super clean diet, shower in my shower. The money wont be worth it if I die suddenly out over the road. Also, no one mentions this very much but vitamin D deficiency happens because you are not getting sunlight. That sunlight through the glass is not the same as actual sunlight, you have to get outside more often to get in the sun.

It’ll be 3 years OTR for me this February so I’m definitely with ya on the over weight thing & probably lack of sunlight since they normally run me north more so than south. I hope this will be my last winter over the road I gotta have a better balance of work life & home life.

Thanks for sharing Brain, mental health has been a struggle since i was a kid. And it still is, but my motorcycle and my daily walks keep me going. Those are the things that keep me from doing something stupid. And it's good to know that we are not alone. Even the little things can make a huge difference. Last i had a really hard day, and on my walk this elder man started to talk to me about how lonely he was because off covid. And this 10minute conversation we had made his day. And it made me feel good. All it was 10 minutes off my time, and i don't think that old man knows he made my day from really bad to pretty good. Still love watching the video's 👌 stay driven 👊

Well Brian, who would guess? You seem so energetic. I too call my relatives only when not depressed. You are out of Texas. There's gotta be some local or regional work to to stay close to home. Sunlight exposure is crucial. At least bear chest. If not available must take vitamin D3. Strength exercise is very important also. I've noticed my mood getting better after only 30 minutes doing pull ups. I have to praise you for dealing with it like a man.

What?? There's no need to forfeit your own critical thinking skills so you don't have to give a shit about anything. Humans help humans. If you need help with ANYTHING, have the courage to reach out to people who drive who YOU are. "Giving" it to your sky daddy is NOT helping clinical depression. It just keeps it balled. Think for yourself. Much more truth, beauty and wisdom will come to you that way...

I got into this as a "retirement job" at age 60. It's a tough job. I'm routinely running out the 70 hour weekly clock, not to mention the various 11 and 14 hour clocks. Take home pay right now doesn't match the effort. Will it get better? I'm told it will. But yeah, it's a tough job.

Losing Chris Cornell (and subsequently Chester) was a huge blow for me. Depression is real. Mental health and awareness is important, and only recently is becoming talked about mainstream (thank goodness!)!. You hit the nail on the head with a lot of points here. One of the reasons I follow you & a select few others is for the ‘real world’ perspective on trucking. You’re right, not all sunshine and rainbows, it’s a hard career, and from someone who also has young ones at home, being away from family is challenging. Thanks for putting it all out on the table Brian. Be safe, take care, and best to you & yours for the holidays. Looking forward to more content when you’re able. Cheers.

Brother, 67V here. Scout helicopter repair. Thank you for your service! I have been in the life of depression/ anxiety. Please give me your ear. Suffering had no meaning, hence hopelessness was sometimes my companion. It got real bad in 2002 after my wife left. I was so angry, I had to do something. Hear me out, I always believed but never really acted like it. Now I do, always. Like it’s my purpose. Service, just like 67V , only multiply it by 10 Thousand. No more meaningless suffering. I still suffer, but there is joy attached to it, not hopelessness. I’m trying not to sound trite, because when humans join the supernatural, it’s not to be taken lightly. Blessed be. No need to suffer brother, any longer than necessary! Thank you for your service to our great civilization and thank you for your videos. Both have been very helpful. Pain is inevitable, misery is optional. Peace

Gavin here from Scotland. I’ve done a few years living in the truck. Good days and bad days. I’d force myself to find a positive in everything that was happening. I missed out on a lot not being there as much with my daughter. Positive I took from that though was because I was working away I could afford to have a roof over her head at weekends and take her on days out and get some quality time in on the few days I had. I still managed to make a few memories. I’m off tramping now and now on nights. Currently working towards day shifts. These moves weren’t possible without the slog to start off with. Takes a Big man to be honest about your feelings. Respect brother
