I am a rookie here and I was really into a bad depression with constant suicidal thoughts 💭every day , and one day I went to a bridge to jump off because at that time life had no meaning, and I didn’t have much to leave for, My family was all back in Uganda, my wife was bipolar and we kept fighting everyday so the American dream instead became a curse for me. I couldn’t jump off the bridge for some reason and I remember going inside the house and praying to God, I testify to you all that Jesus healed me from that depression and he gave me new purpose in life that keeps me going everyday. I promise he can do the same for you. “PRAYER WORKS “ JESUS IS REAL and he is willing to help whoever reaches out. Love you all God bless you Truckers

I’m 44 years old and I’m gonna be getting my cdl. I appreciate all of your advice and I’ve been struggling with depression. I spent 10 years in the navy (special operations) and when I got out I worked in a coal mine for 11 years 12 hrs a day. I’ve always wanted my cdl because there are always jobs in the trucking industry. I have a 3 year old boy that I love very much and I don’t wanna be away from my family for long periods of time but I want them to have a decent life. My plan is to hit the road for a year and get my experience and then get a local job. I just hope I’m making the right decision based on me having depression. Oh and I’ll be going through SWIFTS academy lol. Hope that’s a good choice. Thanks for being real brother.

Some people are depressed because of a chemical reaction in their brain, but sometimes it is caused by being treated poorly or just a life that sucks.

There is a difference. One is a mental health disorder. It's an imbalance of chemicals in the brain. That's true depression. You could be having the best day of your life and all of a sudden you're sad as hell and want to crawl into a hole in the wall. The other is being bummed out about certain shitty circumstances in ones life. Everyone goes through that at times. Just going into more of what you said.

I personally deal with this as well and wanted to share some tips that have helped me along the way. This is still a daily battle with me and will most likely follow me for the rest of my life. 1)Something that has helped me is to learn to love yourself including those faults. Depression and anxiety is a negative but it is also the very thing that makes me a perfectionist, hard worker, and strive for success. 2)People tend to give a big sigh of relief when you talk to them "real". Trucking is full of people trying to be macho and better then other people. It's a breathe of fresh air when someone can talk about stuff like you did. I find the more real you are with others, the better circle of friends end up surrounding you. 3)If you are becoming a truck driver or thinking about taking a leap into being an owner operator. Understand that if you have depression/anxiety it is going to test you a lot. Rushing to get out of the door so you can make sure your on time for a delivery Monday morning after barely having time for your family. Truck breaking down in the middle of nowhere. Months where nothing is going right and everything you touch is costing you money with your truck. Problems at home but you can't be there to help. This is all stuff that will wreak havoc on you mentally and you've got to take time to nurture your mind. 4)I for one have times where my anxiety and depression get the best of me. I've had to learn to make big decisions slowly and make sure I'm thinking clearly. Realize these faults and how they affect your business. Then put yourself aside personally and think about how your mind is affecting the business.

Good video my friend. That’s why I tell people get your finances straight so u can live. People have to learn how to simplify their lifestyle because if you don’t it will keep u a modern day slave to the trade The idea is that you do not want to fall in the trap of working just to make money. The more you earn the more crap you buy, a bigger house, a nicer car that is more than your yearly salary etc. And of that has to be maintained which takes more money and then you will want to upgrade which takes even more money. So u then reach a point where u need so much money to keep everything going and eventually you crack and it all falls apart. If we learn to live more simply with less stuff we would need far less money and could spend our lives in a vocation, of which we love doing, with far less stress. Depression comes from your surroundings and the people u be around and what u put in your mind like watching the Media, Negative and Dysfunctional ass people talking about their problems and who’s going to be the next President and your mind takes control of you then it takes control of your emotional behavior and then your mind starts to race and u go into a depression state. Think about it what ever junk that u put into your mind that’s what u will get. You are the one that controls your mind u are the one that puts one feet out and one feet in. The man in the mirror is a mans worst enemy. The only way to fight depression is live your life like u are going to die tomorrow because once u leave this world it’s no coming back ,it’s over.

I wish more people would realize that career change is possible at any age. Being so miserable in your day to day activities and feeling trapped by bills only makes depression worse. It is better to down size and let go of reaching a salary goal than getting to the place where you feel the only escape is leaving this earth. Your family would rather have you and less money in most cases.

Been there brother. I would drive 2 or 3 months at a time. Begin to become depressed feeling tied to the truck. Found myself developing bad habits. I became someone completely different. I didn't get into truck for trucking. Got in it for the love and once that left so did my discipline. I worked for a few bad companies in a row for about 2 yrs straight. Some family died while in this time, people I promised to come see. I snapped. I didn't care but basically I'm no longer able to do long distance or local because of the stress. Went home to totally reinvent myself without a truck. Trucking became the beautiful girl who seemed nice when you met her but once you started dating, she wanted everything plus your soul. I never attempted to have balance. Even when I should have stayed home, I never said no. Now I'm out of it done. The money isn't great where I'm at like trucking but I go home every night. My peace of mind is returning. I'm no longer trying to justify my mental scars with money. All the missed opportunity for love because I wanted to be out there. I feel you brother. I started a tee shirt company in the truck. Now I'm working to get it off the ground.

I low level depression but what helped me overcome boredom and burnout is having a goal and a solid plan to follow it up. If you're living paycheck to paycheck, any job will burn you out, it doesn't matter what it is. A good way to picture it is with Maslow's hierarchy of needs. If you're depressed and don't know why, unless it's a chemical imbalance obviously, you can compare that pyramid to yourself and you usually figure out what is causing it.

I've wanted to be an owner operator since I started trucking. Figured I'd get a feel for the industry then start to explore O/O options. But then I had a kid, then another. So I gave up the flatbed regional that I enjoyed but didn't pay well, picked up a regional car haul gig, soon to be transferring into a local car haul gig being home every night. Once the kids get bigger and older, I might end up going flatbed O/O.

I appreciate your honesty. I know what depression is. I went through it for 32 years. You tell me every up and down, every curve, chances I've been there. I am about to go on the road. Still looking for a good trucking company that has good reputation on trainers.

Whenever I want to make a change, I build it into my daily routine in a way that I have to do it. So, for instance, your point of the exercise, I was buying my groceries every fourth day during the covid lockdown here in Chile. That meant I was only getting about a half-hour walked every four days for exercise. It didn't take long to figure out that wasn't good enough. As soon as they lifted that, I started buying every second day. It's about a fifteen-minute walk to the supermarket. So...a half-hour roundtrip. Well, then I decided that wasn't good enough. So, I split my 2-day shopping in half. I get part of it one day, and the rest on the second day. Now I've built into my daily routine a half-hour walks every day at a minimum. I do that sort of thing with every change I want to make. Food for thought.

Thank you, man. I came to trucking after a successful 30-year desk career. Was lucky to work from home for 20 of those years. I did struggle with depression- therapy, Effexor, Paxil, then off the meds for about 6 years. Things changed a couple years ago and looked more bi-polar. Lexapro has been great. Meditation helps. Being positive about myself does help, eating right. Career things changed and I’m now scratching my OTR itch. I love it and eat right, cook in the truck. Exercise, not so much... it’s the next goal. My youngest is a college senior, I’m separated and friends with my wife. We’ll sell the house and divorce in a couple of years. I can stay OTR for months. And I’m comfortable with the pace and staying out. My girlfriend comes out on the road a lot. I’ve got wonderful support, thankfully. It’s a daily effort to keep the brain focused on the positive nonetheless. Be grateful to those around you and, importantly, yourself. Recognize how hard you work to do the best for those around you. You, me, many of us, strive to rise above the negative without and within. Thanks for this great video! ✌️❤️🙏

Don't know you personally but trust you are not alone and I applaud you for putting your guard down to speak about something that isn't easy to deal with let alone talk about to others..... I’m not even over the road anymore but I used to be. I come home every weekend and I still hate it, it’s hard to stay in shape out here it’s already hard enough at home, add sitting for 11 hours a day and stress eating and spending money on food because of it. It’s a really hard life, hard on the body no matter what and also hard on the mind.

4 years in I have/had a good family structure behind me that is key. Over the Xmas holidays drama was stirred up to divide us. I belive the money brought jealousy spitefullness and inspiration among us. But its got to the point where its brought hatred between us. I am moving forward 😌 but the one thing I valued more than the grind was my family a few found out about that created issues a cause and yanked It out from under me. Luckily this kind of thing makes me work harder hopefully everything wi ll repair itself. But to me good vibes and a family structure at home is key. Nutritions good advice to. Stay safe out there it gets better brother hard work always pays off in every way 💪 🙏.

I have a very similar issue sometime it leaves me not even wanting to get out the bed. The best thing that works for me is just naming all the things I'm grateful for in my life even the smallest of things because as small as they may seem it's always people who really struggle to have things we may take for granted. God Bless.

Yeah I’ve dealt with depression since I was in my teen yrs and I’m 41 now. It was real intense in my 20’s and it sometimes lasted like everyday for months. For whatever reason in my 30’s it started getting slightly better, but it still comes and goes. I drove truck OTR for 4 yrs. I loved driving and I still kind of miss it. The problem for me was in my final year, every little thing just started bothering the hell out of me. The asshole drivers, the rush hr traffic and if it wasn’t rush hr traffic it was a damn construction zone or an accident scene. In the winter you have to monitor the damn weather and driving in shitty weather sucks. The DOT regulations especially the stupid HOS! The thing that finally led me to quitting was I started thinking of how many hrs a week you spend not driving and not getting paid, but are still on your 14 hr clock. For example drop & hook trailers, cleaning out trailers, having to try and fix something or call and wait for maintenance, sitting at a customer waiting to get loaded/unloaded and detention pay is a damn joke!. Some weeks are worse than others. I started keeping track of how many hrs I spend doing dumb shit and not getting paid for a couple of months. I finally had it and said, “why am I giving free time to this company while being extremely frustrated and irritable. I tried like hell to not have such a bad and pissy attitude about things I can’t control, which was like everything, so no matter how I tried looking at things differently and changing my attitude nothing had worked, so I said, “fuck it this isn’t healthy for me mentally anymore”. Truck driving is a dangerous job and you have a huge responsibility, the pay just wasn’t justified either.

I was recently diagnosed with autism and adhd, being alone in the truck is my favorite thing, it's therapy for me. I rarely want to go home... Guess God built me for OTR. But I to have had bouts of homesickness and loneliness but that was when I needed to take care of stuff at home, once that was taken care of things got way better.

Thank you for sharing your feelings. About 7 years ago , when I started in this business, I felt like shit !! Even though I never drove for anyone other than myself , I’m an o/o 100% independent. Quickly , I found out a better way to disípate my depression. I pick the loads and places that I want to go . If I get the money that I want , I haul it , otherwise I stay home .to make my driving journey I bought me a guitar , harmonica , soccer ball , good books , I listened and watch educational videos and now I love this job . I run about 60. To 70,000 miles per year the most and I gross over 200,000 per year . I run reefer. I wish you the best and keep sharing with us .

True words, I try to be home every other weekend to cope with the isolation. I do have an apartment that I pay for but it's an oasis in the desert when I'm not in a truck. Found out it's not all about the money because at the end of the day we will die leaving it behind. With that being said I try new hobbies, fishing, playing music, sewing, creating new channels on YT, Investing, going to the Gym, trying new recipes, play keyboard, reading. I did not mention anything about family or friends because it's very important to make sure I am standing first so as to support others. Be blessed and keep Trucking

Shoot, I am a corporate pilot and I am tired of my job too. I have my Class A test July 6TH. I have the opportunity to drive for a local tanker company, Mon-Fri. I know we all burn out at one point or another, but all I know is I have always loved trucks ever since a little kid. When I drive that trainer truck I absolutely love it. My wife has noticed that I have a genuine passion for trucking, she can't say the same thing for flying. In fact, I have a trip tomorrow and I am hating life right now, I would much rather drive. Well, soon enough I will be able to make my career change! And most people think I am crazy for giving up flying for trucking, but this is my life and I know what I want to do.

Brother, I don't talk to people about this. I'm now a flatbed driver with a mega-carrier as a new guy in the profession. It is tough man. I was in the army before this, and frequently did long business trips before, but something about this is tough. Combat arms military wasn't tough. This is mentally rough on a person. It's why I joke a lot. It's why I comment on all of your videos. Your 1 of few people who can relate to what is going on at this phase. I'm with ya. Also, you and Eric helped me into this career. I need you to help me along the way. It's going to be a lot of advice for a long time. You've got the door in the fog brother.

Thanks sir, all what you have said is true for trucking Business. How ever , it is a manageable and controble. For example, 1. 30 min. Any kind of exercise I believe every truck driver can do but we don't instead we are busy our smart phones. 2. Look around better spend time when you are looking for contractors, dedicated routs, etc. There are nice paying ones out there don't jump the first one you found. Sometimes Brokers may tell you $2 per mile but after negotiation you may ended up $3.3 p/m 3. If you owner operator make sure to add your license with Hazmat endorsement. Personally, having it gave me a huge deal. I do dedicated rout 4.5 hours a trip 9 h ours round trip, home with kids everyday , and make similar or sometimes more if I go over the road and miss the family 2-3 weeks. 4. Nutrition is important less Donuts, sweets, less all sugary stuff, etc. To be healthy. Otherwise, the body will accumulate all these unhealthy food and it will hunt you back. 5. Drinking more water and less colored drinks such soda, juicy. Don't worry about that you may need frequently restroom if you drink more water. Who cares if you stop for restroom and lost in about 10min. or less. But, your health is long term. Some drivers losing 10 min is more important than drinking more water stopping for restroom. ( bad idea) list can go on and on but just take care yourself so you can support yourself , your family ,and community at large. 6. 7. 8.
