You seem determined, thoughtful, constructive, kind, structured, self-sufficient, creative, aesthetically clear, and disciplined - to me, it just feels obvious that the world is going to read your novels. It made me smile to see you get a reputable agent, and I thought: well, duh. A few times in my life, I've had a quiet gut feeling (usually about people I saw in film). Like, when I first saw the back then mostly unknown Eddie Redmayne in "Savage Grace", I was just so captivated by his... vibe? I felt that he'd go far and beyond, establish his place in the industry, if he was willig to go there. Still, I'd been amazed when it actually started to happen to the max. I was so proud of him. Anyhow, enough of this random comment about gut feelings, hope it didn't weird you out too much, aha. I sincerely wish you all the energy, joy, and luck on your way! 🌼

Major respect on putting your foot down on the agent who wanted the romance subplot. I guarantee they only wanted to include it for the sake of marketing your book as "Romantasy", which is the "big genre" in American publishing right now. And any agent who would want to Frankenstin your book to feed the latest trends would not be a good agent in the long run. Good luck on the next steps in your publishing journey and hope to see your book on shelves soon 💜

I love romance, which is why making someone shoehorn one in is doing such a diservice to the genre. Not to mention adding a superfluous arc to your very carefully crafted and balanced story. Well done again on achieving your literary agent milestone, I've comfort watched that video 3x already ✨

Christy I swear your videos are some of the only ones I can actually watch all the way through and be so thoroughly engaged!! I am happy to be a patreon supporter and will continue! I truly believe in your talent and just you as a person! I feel you on the romance stuff. No dig to romance plot lines but every story doesn’t need it and just because you’re a woman doesn’t mean that’s automatically included. I get ppl love the idea of slow burning tension lol but when appropriate. If your story did not have that originally, then I think it was a wise decision to keep it out. I’m so looking forward to getting your book!!! ❤️

This sort of thing is common in other areas too. "Survivors guilt" when posting in an illness group that one is in remission, or announcing that one is pregnant after years of trying, knowing that others are still trying too. But it's ok to share our good news.

It’s so great to see an author from South Australia have success in getting an international agent in recent times, that answers my unspoken question of whether it’s even possible for a smallish town Australian writer like me to possibly achieve that some day

I watch Jack Edward’s channel too and I was thinking to myself while he talked about the Women’s Awards a while ago that allll of those long listed books are about divorce or some kind of tragedy that is specific to women. It highlighted for the first time for me that most books by women are about love and all the different variables of it, and I couldnt help but roll my eyes, which is surprising because I definitely do adore some love-oriented books with female protagonists, my bookshelf holds a number of them! But I guess the market is seriously lacking in female main characters who do literally anything else. I’m excited for project teacup and I hope it’ll scratch a certain itch that I think a lot of women are feeling.

I'm glad someone thought to ask about the questions you asked because I was wondering too. I was also wondering - how does it feel (I guess?) having submitted what you think is the "best" version of a project to then get a bunch of edits back? I guess I'm wondering whether the reaction is "I can't believe I didn't see that" or "that's an edit only someone experienced could offer" because obviously you'd have had multiple people reading the manuscript before you sent it off. (like, you think it's the very best, most polished it could possibly be and then someone suggests an edit - it must be weird?)

Omg I did not realise Australia in general doesn't have much support for spec fic. That makes so much sense now.
@christy-anne-jones
@christy-anne-jones 7 ай бұрын
It has basically none! Our literary festivals don't invite fantasy authors, our creative writing lecturers at universities are snobby about fantasy (or at least, basically all of mine were 😅), our 'speculative fiction' competitions only give awards to literary pieces with the vaguest magical realism elements, our writers residencies often stipulate that ONLY literary fiction authors can apply… It is tiring. Especially as literary fiction makes up such a small % of sales in Australia compared to genre fiction

@@christy-anne-jones Basically I've always had a vague distaste for "Australian literature" (I'm Australian) and didn't understand why, but I think it's that lack of support for anything a bit more out of the box. Anyway I'm studying writing at uni and the focus is definitely on lit fic, but I have my first genre fic class this semester so I'm excited to write more of what I like to read.

I don't like how agents want romance in certain genres , but I think it's the editors telling them it's easier to sell it to them with a romance. It's weird how that preference runs into genres other than romance. And YA as an age category, I've heard needs a romance subplot

hi Christy! in my home country (Nigeria) the traditional publishing path is not that clear, and i'm not sure i want to self-publish. but you mentioned that you got an agent outside Australia, does that mean you can get an agent outside your country without actually meeting them in person? how will meetings go as such? how will you get your final copy of the book if you're not in the country where it's published? thanks
@christy-anne-jones
@christy-anne-jones 7 ай бұрын
Absolutely! I got my agent without meeting her in person. We had all our meetings over Zoom. So you could do the same thing: submit to agents in the UK and US, while living elsewhere. Regarding WHERE the book is published: what would happen is that the agent will sell first to their own region (Bailey is from the US, so she'll try to get a book deal for the US first). And then once that's done, they try to sell to other regions. I'm not sure which category Nigeria falls into. Australia is under Commonwealth rights (I think). So there needs to be an additional deal made for that. However, if the book sells in the US but not the Commonwealth regions, I kind of have to be at peace with that. That's not something I have much control over. (You could always order a copy of your book FROM the US though, if that happened)
