If I were to buy one JDM car nowadays, I´d choose Type R blindfolded the design is awesome, that engine seems high spirited and mated to a MT 👌

Making a rwd civic type r makes as much sense as a fwd sedan mustang. APPRECIATE it for what it is!

Nice review from a designer's perspective! I already own a Gen 1 Audi R8 V10 manual(AWD) and an E46 M3 manual(RWD), then we just added an FL5 Type R to the garage just a couple weeks ago. I'd say that its rounds out the selection of 4-wheeled weapons to drive! I have to say, its just as fun, if not more fun, to rip thru the backroads or up the mountain than the other two, more powerful cars. Its just that good. And that shifter out of the box is just divine! Best shifter out of all 3 of our cars. Honda did this iteration of the Civic Type R just right. As nice as the Integra Type S is, it just doesn't feel as special as the CTR. Thats what sets them apart. In 10-20 years, the CTR will be more sought after by car enthusiasts than the ITS. I guarantee it.

Exactly why I chose the type r over the type s. The type s looked like an afterthought whereas the type r was built from the ground up. Acura cars in general don’t age well at all.

@@ka124as to be honest, when Acura revived the Integra name, and then I saw renders of the concept, I was already turned off. I grew up during the 90s when import sport compacts were all the rage and the Integras were one of the popular models to tune. The GSR and then the Type R were iconic. This iteration of the Integra from a design perspective doesn't really carry on any of the lineage that the old Integras possessed. It's 4 doors, much heavier, and not as sleek looking. Kinda along the same lines as the NSX. It's almost a complete departure of the original formula that made the OG versions classics. As far as the FL5, they kept alot of the recipe intact, in a more modern package. You still feel the spirit of the 90s CTRs when you get behind the wheel of it and drive.

The FK8 won many awards though. FL5 is sleek. That's always Honda's trend. I bet the next gen would be aggressive looking again. Remember the FD to FB to FC.

This is a way better drivers car ……far better steering feedback, more agile feel, way better gearbox, comparable ride, and a nicer interior is my thoughts after previously owning a 2017 M2 and 2020 M2 Comp

This is a fantastic car. The only issue I have is the stiff suspension from the factory. But there's a module that controls the adaptive suspension from the Integra type s. It makes the type R suspicious more softer in comfort. That's the only modification I'd do to it.

It's kind of funny how everybody was bashing the FK8 styling until the fl5 was released. Too much seasonings to bland. But i still respect the looks of the fl5.

I gotta say, while I much prefer the FL5, it also made me appreciate the FK8 when I had previously despised it. The reserved styling looks great and I now I don’t mind getting a little silly with maximal styling on the FK8.

Yeah there’s nothing else on the road that looks like the FK8 Type R. I think the people who designed it knew that going in. They knew it would be controversial initially but that in hindsight its design would start to look really unique.

My thoughts exactly. I kinda miss the over-the-top playful styling of the FK8, and then I also appreciate how handsome the FL5 is.

Imo Fk8 is a tribute to Japanese robot animes like gundam or sth like that. Which is not appealing to westerners. FL5 is more like a popular and mature guy who everybody likes. But with less Japanese identity

ironic because most of FK8 sales were in the US, the target market for the car FL5 allocations have been prioritized for Japan first then US then the rest of the world

It’s a fun car to drive. It actually holds cargo, the fuel economy is great as well. Its a dying breed, and that is also sad.

Agreed....a more contoured hatch edge with a lip extension similar to a supra would have looked better.

The kicks on the sides of the front bumper are indeed functional - they create a high pressure zone in front of the bumper which encouraged air to route along the side of the car. They are not "fake vents", as described in this video. This is a detail that has been missed by many on early reviews, but for God's sakes man this video is just a month old as of today. Do some research before making a video, at least!

FK8 is better. This one looks boring and the interior isn't as nice. The back of the front seats is really cheap looking fabric. The FK8 has a nice, molded plastic backing and they look sportier. The FK8 has a nicer steering wheel with two-tone black/red leather and a flat bottom. The FK8 has fog lights and looks way more aggressive from the front. The FK8 has an integrated infotainment screen. The 2023 has a cheap-looking screen mounted on top of the dashboard. I hate that look in a car. The only feature that's better in the 2023 is the Bose sound system. The FK8 has the worst audio system ever.

⚫⚫⚫⚫⚫I like the fl5, but it looks a bit too generic. (5:23) Bembli's redesign here reasonably makes it look less generic on the road For eg: You can see lose resemblance to something like a Toyota CHR SUV from both the front and rear. ///////Some other notes: 1. 17:39 it's the same thing with the fk8. You can't see the spoiler typically as it follows the line of the roof as well. 2. Glad you pointed out that fl5 still has fake vents at 3:35 and 8:11. Many reviewers don't bother highlighting that, but point out artificial vents on the fk8 only. they both have basically the same number of artificial vents. 3. The Fk8's bonnet vent is also functional, according to Honda Press Release. You can see channels from the vent leading to the open side fender vents 4. With fk8's artificial vents though, one can easily remove the cap and do stuff like front mounted turbos, which you can't do on fl5 because it's fake vents are tiny on the front bumper. 5. 6:04 Both fk8 and fl5 have functional side fender vents Overall both reasonably nice cars, fk8 / fl5

@@jameswillard1 lap times against the most popular competitors, details about suspension and body rigidity, real whp on the dyno and so on... There are a lot of interesting things you can go with especially if you claim you have a lot things to say. Not just boring facts about exterior and interior that are obvious and have been already covered in every single review since fl5 came out.

Too much money for just a FWD. My 2023 WRX is a much better road car that seats five and will easily out handle this is bad weather with AWD.

No one cares about peak handling in bad conditions, lol. Wrx loses In everything other than dig racing and driving in snow/wet (which is not when people race). CTR mops the floor with the wrx. CTR has a way better engine, tranny, and resale value, too.

Love the look of the new type R. It's a great looking car all around and seems like a great driver. But personally, for what they are selling for, I would opt to spend a bit more money and get the Lexus IS500.

@generic9777 yeah, I think there's still alot of hype around the type R (or just optioned to the moon) and it seems like they are all over 50k+ in my area. IS500's are roughly 60k. A bit more money but you get 200 more hp, rwd and a better quality interior.

this isn't true. tbh, I think dealerships try to inflate the price. but I own the fl5 and spent 4 hours haggling the price down to msrp. You just have to be serious that you'll buy it that day and stick to it. If they don't think you'll buy it, you won't get it.
