Another brilliant tutorial from Robin. I was starting to run into these sort of problems and half working them out so your timing is perfect. This will really help me to think things through. Filling in the missing squares is really an end game strategy but this technique allows one to start looking at rows columns or blocks with more than three empty squares with more confidence. So it becomes more like an effective middle game strategy.

Hey Robin, at 12:24 you said there cant be a 3 in the middle block at the top, why is that? In the middle block on the left side could be a 3 on the top row and in the middle so you cant lock the 3 in the top row? Or why i am wrong? greetz ::D

Does a "danger, danger" mean that the setter removed 1 too many given digits or is that acceptable and the solvers responsibility to chose a solution that avoids the danger?

It is the solver's responsibility to spot and make corrections so that one corner of the rectangle is different. This stops the problem of having 2 solutions. Look at tutorial #93

Robin, great video. I keep getting bogged down (good Aussie term), in the expert and diabolical puzzles. I seem to be hopeless at spotting patterns more complex than an X-wing. Dear Sudoku Guy, great videos! I hate to point it out, but I think this puzzle just does not have a unique solution - it has three solutions. In the open cells in the very left column it could go 1-8-9 or 1-9-8 or 8-1-9 (from top to bottom). None of these possibilities leads to a contradiction.

@@SudokuGuy My key point is that your initial puzzle does not have a unique solution, it has three solutions. During your solve (around the 20 minute mark) you use uniqueness in order to write the big „1“ into the cell in row 3/column 1. This leads to one solution of this puzzle, but there are two other possible solutions: In column 1, there could be a „1“ in row 2 and an „8“ in row 3, or there could be a „1“ in row 2 and a „9“ in row 3. Both of these possibilties work just fine with the rest of the puzzle. In my understanding „Uniqueness“ is a shortcut where one uses the fact that a creator made a puzzle with just one solution in order to eliminate some possibilities. In a way, one just trusts in the creator, but by using this technique one cannot conclude that the puzzle does indeed only have one solution. Nevertheless, this is a great tutorial and you very clearly explain how to use uniqueness in a Sudoku puzzle. Please keep those videos coming!

Sudoku Guy, before I found you, I was thinking, China imported these puzzles just to torment us Americans, or the world. Well, you sure have showed the Chinese :). Anyhow, First puzzle, second row you got rid of the 8 and put in a 2, then you got rid of the 6 and put in a 5. I don't understand why not the 8 instead of the 2, and a 6 instead of the 5? I'm wondering what rule applies? Thank you in advance, and, you have made life, a lot better.
