I Have KK vs. AA! SET OVER SET! Can I Lay This Down?

Here's another crazy high stakes hands I played on Poker Night In America over the weekend. This time I've got my 2nd favorite hand with tens of thousands of dollars shoveling into the pot. Unfortunately, my opponent Kyle Julias has my 1st favorite hand, pocket aces. An ace and a king on the flop don't help matters, but the turn card gives me hope, and by the river I think I notice something fishy going on. Can I make one of the sickest laydowns in poker history?

LOL love the ending. Just wanted to thank you for the vids. I've been somewhat successful in local games for the past several years, but always based my strategy more around reads. I've been trying to switch over to more GTO just accented with reads, and it's absolutely absurd how often, especially at lower stakes, even my not-good-at-theory ass can find spots people are just super unbalanced. I find myself not caring about the actual results, and only about trying to make the right decision based off of range. I found myself at a table with someone I really respect in the game (Blair Hinkle) last night. I ended up bluffing him in 3 of the 4 hands we played, and at least two of them I wouldn't have previously. I just recognized that the board runout was better for my range than his, and acted accordingly. I really feel like my game has improved by leaps and bounds in the past several months since I started following you and can't thank you enough.

Question about the river bet: If the action goes to a 5-bet and call preflop, shouldn't you consider that you're only against either AK or AA, especially after the call on the 8KA flop? If he somehow has JJd or QQd (I really don't see AQ or QJ reaching the river), would those hands really call your jam? Bottom line is: When jamming on the river you're virtually flipping a coin between him having AK and AA. 13:52 "This is a hand that I'll have to jam." But do you really have to? I know I'm not a professional poker player(and I don't know if I would have gotten away from it), but all joking aside, I don't see how this is a snap shove.

SVillainG what hands do you think you'd beat here in a showdown by checking river after the hand went 4bet pre and he called your bet on the flop? Doug's range here is also much wider than Julius not only because ; what is Julius calling a 4 bet but not jaming when you're this deep? QQ JJ TT AK sometimes AQ and rarely KK and AA (some most of the time, you're ahead with KK), but also because Doug is a looser player. although Doug's range is small, it's much wider than Julius because his bottom range could be KQsuited, QJsuited and on rarer occasions unconnected Broadway suited hands. The shove here looks bad cuz of the result but jaming here is way better than checking. although you're most likely going to get called only by better or possibly AK, you could make someone fold better hands when you're this deep. better sets and flushes because you hold (potentialy) the nut flush with the K of diamonds. I'm no poker pro either but I see a shove as much more profitable in the longer run ( EV) than checking.

Why not AQ? He could have easily called preflop with AQ or AK and the flop bet by Polk was small in comparison to the pot. So yes AQ and AK is a reasonable guess for what your opponent has. It is very rare someone with Aces will not re-reraise preflop after doug re-raised and he never reraised polks bet on the flop and he never bet turn or river. It was maximum deceptiveness. He played that hand well against doug. He knew doug is not a tight player and that doug might either bluff the river or doug might try to get value from his hand. I will admit, that river check was fairly risky. Ity's not the easiest to put Doug on kings there either based on the play.

@Doug Polk Poker Surely there isn't much value in shipping it when the board bricks there, because you're only getting called by AA and maybe AK. Was this a mathematical consideration? Did you think that since the effective stack size was 10k, you were laying yourself 10k:15k, such that you only need to be good 40% of the time on his calls. But what if he finds a fold with AK there. Have you seen Julius cold-call 4-bets and 5-bets with AQ AK type hands before? Anyone else have any ideas?

Julius only had ~9k left on the river, and the pot was ~14k. If Polk is sure that Julius doesn't have a flush, then the river shove is fine, because it's impossible to put someone on AA there. (All IMO, of course.)

Given the way Julius played the hand, I'd have a hard time putting him on AA. I'm old-school when it comes to flopping a set; if you don't go broke with it, you probably played it wrong. You didn't really go into your river thinking and I think you might have made the wrong move, so curious what you think. Given the large sizing, I think hands like KQ, QJ, and JT suited would almost always fold preflop, so very unlikely your opponent called you with diamonds on the flop and got there on the turn. It could happen, but very unlikely. If he called with hands like QQ or JJ they are going to fold on the flop, and if somehow they call, they'll definitely fold on the river bet anyway. Because of this, I think his river range is essentially AA, AK, and AQ suited, since you block KK. To your bet on the river, AQ is an obvious fold. There are three combos of AA and three combos of AK. AA will snap call you, AK probably will call it off since you might be trying to bluff him or push him off a chop, but might make a hero fold. Because of this, I think you should check back against his range since even if he calls it off with AA and AK this is an EV neutral play. I think if you construct your river range as JJ+, AK, AQs, I would do as follows. Give up and check back JJ and QQ (if you even 5-bet with these, JJ is probably doubtful here). Check back KK for the reasons mentioned above, you're at best getting called by worse 50% of the time. Bet AA for value obviously. Bluff with AQ suited. Check back AK also. With that being said, you might have thought that he might jam the river himself with AA or AQ. However, I think he needs to check the river with his aces to protect his AK's, otherwise his range is capped and you can jam AA, KK, AK to get him off chops, AQs, and maybe even your whole range (QQ as well).

IMHO, a very good summary! Villain`s range,given the previous action, at the river is too narrow (AA/AK/AQ) to make a value bet profitable. The only real counter argument I can see is that we often bluff here, with the intention to get said AQ to fold. Then, we have to bet KK for thin value, to balance our bluffs; - otherwise, AQ would indeed become a hero call, as we in this case only have a single combo of AA as value. However, it is actually rather unlikely that we reach the river with a bluff hand; - maybe JJ (if we even 5bet it pre this deep) with a diamond? And, more so, do we have to be balanced for this random case ? Bluffing with AQ (QQ is obv even worse) is likely a bad idea,however, as it looks exactly like the hand we are bluffing against. AK likely has to check-herocall, as it blocks both AA and KK. As a last point, it is not clear at all whether AK/AQ are normally in a 5-bet coldcall range; maybe AKs/AQs. In this case, the only real hand we hope to get value from with KK is AKss.

I agree with that Badbentham. To bet a hand for value, you need over 50% of his range to call you. Assuming he cold-calls the 5-bet and calls the river with AA and every AK then he is calling exactly 50% of the time here, which makes it an exactly neutral value bet. And if any of those assumptions don't hold, i.e., if he is ever folding AKo pre-flop or folding AK on the river, then you can't bet this hand for value. I think the counter-argument is as you said Raisemaniac maybe Doug discounted AA because AA can jam pre-flop, check-jam flop, jam turn, or jam river, so a lot of AA combos might not be in his river range. On the other hand, AKs can sometimes jam pre-flop as a bluff, AKo should never jam pre-flop (although might fold pre-flop), and post-flop all AK will check-call flop and check down, which means there might be more AK combos that make the river than AA combos. However, some people might call with 100% of their range to a 5-bet with those stack sizes to protect their worse hands and a lot of people were flatting AA and KK pre-flop throughout the sessions. Side point, I made a mistake in previous comment when I said "Given the large sizing, I think hands like KQ, QJ, and JT suited would almost always fold preflop, so very unlikely your opponent called you with diamonds on the flop and got there on the turn. It could happen, but very unlikely." since he can't have KdQd since Doug has the king of diamonds. Also, because E-Tay was 3-betting light the whole session (wtf is 3-betting 95s against the best player at the table with 2 players left to act), Julius's 4-bet range might be wider which might make his 5-bet call range wider even though Doug is playing GTO and probably isn't expanding his 5-bet range and Doug's 5-bet sizing was huge. However, the only hands that might somehow make the river besides AA, AK, and AQ is a QJ or JT flush anyway, and very unlikely, so really a non-factor in my opinion. Honestly, I think it isn't crazy to value-bet KK in this spot, just wish Doug expanded upon it more, I really don't think it is so simple because I think Julius could find an AK fold here, and up until the river I actually would expect Julius to play AA like this (I think he might bet the river himself with AA). On the other hand, if I was playing at the 2-5 live tables I typically play, I would definitely value-bet KK since you'd have to be really good to fold AK on the river.

Maybe Julius was playing pretty loose pre-flop and he felt AK AQ type hands were more likely than AA. And all AK hands would check-call flop and check it down, whereas AA might ship it before the river. Although I still think that objectively it's equally likely Julius reaches river with AA as AK (and mathematically 3 combos of each). Therefore I guess it comes down to context and hand histories which only Doug (and the others at the table) could clarify for us. Presumably Doug went all in for good reason.

Hmmmmmmmm. It's a pretty weird situation to check KK there but you do actually make some great points. The instant decision would be to shove the river but what actually calls other than AA and AK? I guess you could argue that there are more AK that just call pre rather than AA which are more likely to shove but I'm not entirely sure about that either. AK could arguably (although unlikely) fold pre or COULD shove if he thinks Doug's 5 betting light and wants to take it down there. In all I think there's slightly more AKs than AA and maybe even a few AQs that MIGHT call BUT there's also some really dodgy flushes as well. Is it possible he could hero call with QQ or JJ thinking Doug's made a loose preflop play and is trying to make a play on the river? Hmmmmmm what a spot to be in. I think he's right to shove but it's tighter than it first appears. Conventionally Julius should only really call AK or AA there but I've seen stranger things. Live poker can make some weird things happen. Great analysis. Most people would scoff at the idea of checking back KK there but you've got some valid points imo.

Doug, even though I was critical of you on your recent post about players getting hacked and security with phones and trusting online sites with passwords, I think you're okay. I think your videos are too wordy and long and I find myself not really even listening to your commentary about hands because it seems like you discuss pretty much every scenario that's possibly and miss the basics about poker in that it's a lot of chance and luck many times. It's not always about "do they have xyz" type of hands in each specific scenario. It's fine that you discuss the possibilities but again, I think you go way too far with your commentary. If you could minimize it to about 10% of what you discuss, it would be more worthwhile and I would probably listen.
