Totally missed opportunity in the "watch you chase a mudskipper all over the room"department! Set up a camera on a tripod when you're shifting creatures. If nothing else, I bet you'll get a few laughs! My favorite video over at the Dark Den is when Petko lost a wee little spider during a tarantula transfer and ended up having to move all his furniture and take the baseboard off, only to have the little baggage come walzing out from a sofa cushion where it was hiding all the time! Humor at other people's expense is the best youtube humor! ;-) Lord knows we've all been there!

My funny mudskipper story: As I was opening the shipping bag, my mudskipper jumped out of the net into my kitchen sink where the hot water was running (girlfriend was doing dishes) and he thrashed around in that dirty sink in hot tap water for ten or twenty seconds while I was panicking and trying to save my pet. Long story short...he lived and is thriving...these guys are unstoppable. I've seen them literally thriving in open sewer ditches in several third world countries.

Have had both lots of fun. You need to get rid of the coarse gravel not good for them only fine sand, coarse gravel over time is to rough for them.

Question for you, so I'm setting up my first ever mudskipper tank, how important is a mud substrate for them or is it ok to do it with the wet sand like you have? I would rather do it with the sand like yours if it don't really matter to them mainly so its cleaner and easier to see the guys in there.
@Dalmom721 Жыл бұрын
I am so obsessed! I breed a few different types of fish and I want mudskippers. I've not had anything brackish yet, so mudskippers, bumblebee gobies and probably pee puffers are going to be my foray into brackish water. Do they need to have gravel like this or can they do sand. Or a combination of both be okay? I have a 40 breeder that I was going to put them all in and I was going to make it so the fish could go underneath the area that the mudskippers are on. I was trying to figure out what kind of substrate I would use. I'm trying to do all my due diligence and research it forever before I make a decision on exactly what I want and how I want to do it. But these are definitely on my to do for this year!
@Dovietail5 жыл бұрын
Those are the cutest wee blighters I've ever seen in my life! Glad you got them. Totally worth the drive as far as I'm concerned. Of course I'm not buying the gas! Anyway, I'm taking it on as a project to figure out what fish can go in with African mudskippers. Exactly how big are their mouths, and where are they from in Africa? These and other questions... What about kribensis? What about Congo tetras? Also, are there plants that will grow in a sandy briny environment for the land portions of a mudskipper habitat? Maybe something emergent? That tank need some green in the worst way.
@TazawaTanks5 жыл бұрын
As far as their mouths, they can eat a guppy whole. I don’t think they would do well with Congo tetras or kribs, as they are from brackish water. I have had zero luck having any real plants thrive in the brackish water. I had some Java fern barely survive for a few weeks. I have some realistic synthetic plants coming my way, which I will review and showcase.
@Dovietail5 жыл бұрын
@@TazawaTanks of course! I totally forgot about the brackish because of the Guppies. How about Sailfin mollies?

You’re making me want mudskippers. Think 2-3 Indian dwarfs would do okay in a 20 long?
@TazawaTanks5 жыл бұрын
Yes, 3 can easily be housed in a 20 long. Just make sure that you have a few different areas above water, and some decor do break up the line of sight.

Tazawa Tanks I’ve got river stones and a couple small pieces of driftwood. So something around 8-10 gallons of water with a small sponge filter?
@TazawaTanks5 жыл бұрын
Sure. You don’t need that much water though. Shallow is fine.
@thatoneguy129865 жыл бұрын
Tazawa Tanks right on. This would be my first nano tank. It’s hard to wrap my brain around anything less than 40-60 gallons. That does give me a little more flexibility scaping the tank though. Now to just find some.

Why? They spend more time on land than in the water. You can easily keep these in a tank with just a couple of inches of water. The depth I have in this tank is to allow for the waterfall and the guppies.
