My ancestors came from the North and North East of Scotland when the slave trade was ongoing. They worked hard and some were moved on due to the Highland Clearances. They received no benefit from the slave trade or the plantations, like most of the UK population. It was the rich merchants and bankers. So why should my taxes be handed over for something my ancestors were not guilty of?

Exactly. And many Scots still hate the English because of what happened during these times. Yet the vast, vast majority of English people were every bit as much victims of this kind of thing. The Scottish ruling classes did more to harm ordinary Scots than ordinary English people ever did. If compensation is to paid out over past harms, 99.9% of the world's population has a claim. You can't hold any nation, race or religion responsible because it was always a small subset of powerful people fleecing everyone.

Most Brits have some family members who've had some run in with a workhouse; then there's the people who forcibly had their children removed from them because they were conceived out of wedlock (Ireland). In 1807 the UK made steps to abolish slavery. In 1833 the slavery abolition act came into power. Its says that the men and women should be freed from their enslavers. James Mansfield even said the air here is too pure, that anyone who breathed it became free. We then proceeded to pay for the slavery. over the space of around 200 years, ending in 2015. Families, generations of men and women paid taxes for something they had nothing to do with. meanwhile slavery didn't end in America till 1865, Portugal in 1869. It took until the 1930's for Egypt to end slavery. Iran in 1929 and 1962 in Saudi Arabia. What have these countries done to pay for their pasts?

The slave trade was abolished by the UK in 1807 and ever since these countries have benefitted from being part of the Commonwealth and their citizens can live in the UK, study in the UK for free (yes, look up the number of grants there are) and even seek British citizenship, and many have. What would we be paying them for?? Also, what about the Brits who were enslaved by other countries? People fail to mention that. Will their descendents get slavery payments too? Here's a solution to this reparations crap. Work out what we owe them and the as a counter claim put in one for Britain who ended slavery via the Royal Navy in the 19th Century. Work out the costs involved in paying off the Planters and owners of slaves to free them; work out the costs to the ancestors of all those British sailors who died fighting slavery on the High Seas and through disease; work out the damage to our Royal Navy ships and the cost of armaments used; work out the cost of freedom for all those slaves freed so that we can ask their ancestors for reparations for work this country did to make sure they are free and finally work out what all those costs come to in the CURRENT climate. I reckon they would owe us big time because two can play the reparations game!!
