What a brilliant episode... it shows how real you are as a muso... been unable to play since the beginning of June due to ill health, this is just what I needed to see... thankyou...

My Dad was a piano player and was proficient plus and beyond. If he was playing Saturday night he’d spend 2 hours Saturday afternoon practicing. As a kid I must have heard him play the same songs many hundreds of times. When I asked him why he needed to rehearse stuff he’d played a thousand times he told me he needed to physically and mentally get in tune. It took me until I was in my mid 20’s to understand that. What’s happening in your mind has to get to your fingers and transpose to your instrument. Timing, phrasing, sustain, playing softly or let it rip. So many variables. Thanks Shane, a great video and you brought back a flood of memories.

Love it… this almost a behind the scenes view, not the polished produced version. Having said that, it increases the respect I have for the quality of what you can put out. Awesome range of stuff for on the fly!

I have been playing for about 40 years. I’ve had a few breaks maybe even a month or more what you lose in terms of dexterity you gain in creativity. I find my playing much fresher after a break. You will rock it

Whenever I take a break, as long as it isn’t too long, I usually come back feeling fresh, even if my fingers are a little wobbly. I have fun new ideas, or a mindful confidence moving between chords Three weeks is too long, but worth it for Hawaii!

Shane. Good to see you do a music video ( instead of a gear review ) - and on such a 'personal' honest level. People seem to learn music ( and instruments ) from completely different angles, so can think differently about playing the same thing. How about a video telling us more about your playing ? ( ie. Lessons of self taught ? ... Theory or scales / patterns guy ? ... Do you mix scales ? ... etc ).

Good to see Shane, interesting how different guitarists warm up and get back into playing. It's hard to not play for that long, but happens when on holidays sometimes.

Inspirational insights. Thanks Shane. I have picked up my guitar again recently after many years... because, life. I'm relearning my way around the fretboard on an electric acoustic with 20 yr old strings. Yes. Really. The old amp is still good. I've also picked up a new Artist LP59, a new valve tone amp and some toy pedals. But most of my time is on the old basic. Back at ground zero. Getting my 70yr old fingers to work, and the calouses back on the fingertips..I'm chasing Clapton, but that’s a long journey from clapt out. I had a spinal cord injury in 2022 and I haven’t been able to play since. My fingers are weak and numb. I have to be content now with looking at my guitars and listening to my old recordings to remember what it was like to be a musician.

Like all of us I have a home studio and my band and I are finishing off our second lot of recordings of original materia but between guitar solos / vocal tracking and mixing I don't get enough guitar practice time in. Cheers Shane.

G'day Shane, using blues backing tracks is how I'm teaching myself the 5 minor pentatonic position's. Im playing clean with slight delay and some reverb. Ive improved a lot doing this in the past few months and its fun. You mentioned a your mate Brian, does he have a channel too?, id like to check it out.

Great advice here Shane. We all love our 'toys' and 'effects' when playing, but when you need to get your playing back in line, you need to play 'clean'. If the playing is any good, it will be superior even without 'effects' and still knock people out. I think a lot of players forget that and tend to use 'effects' to try and 'play better' when it's a process of elimination. If I have not played in a long and I need to get into shape, I'll start out back on an acoustic guitar, it's brutal, painful, but long term it's a benefit. A bit like sandpaper, then I move up through the grades, onto electric guitars, lighter strings, effects to compliment etc etc.... It's a funny thing, you can spend years playing and think you have this thing 'nailed', but the guitar can still put you on your @ss! whenever it wants, it remains 'the boss'! I guess that's why we have great respect for it. :)

I can't imagine stopping at all. I've played at least an hour a day since I first picked up a guitar in December of 2020. Not being a traveler, I'd rather buy gear!
@bluesrocker918 күн бұрын
I really can't imagine going three whole weeks without playing, let alone two months... In 20 years I don't think I've gone more than two consecutive days without playing. At the age of 14 I more or less vowed to myself that I would play every day that I could, and while I do have nights off, I still typically play six nights out of seven. Realistically, I could probably do with a break... I've been getting bad shoulder pains lately, and the burnout is very real. But just entertaining the idea of a week or two away from the guitar genuinely gives me anxiety. Any time I skip a night, I find it takes double the effort to pick it up again the night after, and I worry that if I put the guitar down for a week or two, I might never be able to motivate myself to pick it up again.

Have you ever zoomed in on your timing on a grid on your daw? I did that today and found that i play slightly before the beat on most notes. It's not audible to me at all but I apparently do lol.

That's what MAKES you HUMAN!
@bluesrocker918 күн бұрын
Don't overthink it... The DAW and time grid didn't exist before the '90s. Drop any classic rock or blues track from the '60s, '70s or '80s into your DAW and you'll see that it always drifts in and out with the grid. Guitar licks, snare hits, vocal lines etc. Often the whole lot will speed up slightly as the energy builds. The most important thing is that it sounds and feels good, not what it looks like on a mathematical chart.
@DMSProduktions8 күн бұрын
@@bluesrocker91 Actually grids did exist prior as MIDI worked on clocks!
