Overthrow Disc Golf

Күн бұрын

Ive been getting coached by Josh for 3 years now... It's crazy to see how far my form has come. Recently we got a tech disc, and it has really been an eye opening experience for all of us here. We are messing around with things day in and day out, and now that we have some pro stats to compare our throws to, is there a chance that my current throws are already at an elite level? Guess you will have to watch to see ;)

Based off of playing with the dashboard and simulator, seems like the ingredients for an ideal throw are about: - 10-15° hyzer - 0° nose angle - 5° launch - 3.5° wobble I got these numbers by sorting by distance and the creating sets out of a few distance ranges. Nose angle tended to be higher in the slower speeds, but it makes sense to me that at higher distances, on average, it wasn't all negative degrees of nose down, it was closer to zero at 0.3°. Anything not zero is probably going to create more drag since the disc is not flat. I think ideally, for distance you want to throw 0° nose angle to minimize resistance in the air. But manipulating the nose angle is definitely something to practice for shot shaping. To me this indicates that the best release is clean, 0° nose angle, and slight hyzer. If you want to throw farther, speed is king. Since the rpm increases pretty linearly with speed, I don't think you need to put more spin on the disc, just throw faster. This is the average speed and rpm across distances: - 400 ft = 62 mph, 1,100 rpm - 450 ft = 66 mph, 1,200 rpm - 500 ft = 71 mph, 1,300 rpm - 550 ft = 75 mph, 1,400 rpm - 575+ ft = 77.6 mph, 1,430 rpm So if you want to throw 500ft you need to learn how to get up to 70mph. This information is of course only as good as the data and simulator. It will be interesting to check these numbers out with larger sample sizes and fieldwork to verify distances.

Congrats on your improvements! Personally, I'm glad to see this type of video finally coming out. There's been too much division across the various coaches, that I think to some extent a few students take too personally, and try to tear down other coaches individually. Rather than accepting that they are all trying to help, they assume incompetence, if not ill intent. I think there's a little bit of "talking past each other" from coaches and students alike, and I think what gets ignored is that all of these coaches are helping a lot of people - despite being imperfect, or not knowing all the answers.

Glad to see the continued success' of each of you on an individual basis as well as the entire collective of the O.T. buisness model and brand and what it brings to the growth and evolution of disc golf. To even having a online disc and merch store with the highly sought after disc molds and how they show support and growth with stocking other quality brands like Trash Panda discs and the important sustainability movement. The O.T. brand is one I highly reccomend and have and continue to gain strides in my form from applying the vast wealth of information they share not only online on youtube or instagram for free but with your patreons subscriptions you get more in depth analysis and those 1 on 1 break downs of individual said patreons form reviews. Along with the touring clinics Josh and O.T. have done. Each are great avenues to better your form with the entire O.T. team and you can count on O.T. staying on the leading edge of data collection for acheiving those top notch mechanics we all seek to gain with products they use like Tech Disc to ensure accurate data collection with no gimmicks but rather provide you with real science on how to improve your form and overall game as Mikey has clearly shown how its improved his form here. Im ready to see Mikey in the cash on the Pro Tour in 2024 already. Just saying, I can see it coming and you will too with Josh of O.T.'s excellent coaching strategies...... (and no Im not paid to say these things). I firmly believe in Josh and his knowledge and attention to the details.

It depends. I know for a fact though that a coach is better for a beginner than a tech disc. I really feel like someone needs to be guided through good form otherwise you might see a couple of your stats increase from doing something that is actually wrong, and then you will have something that is bad for you in the long run as your form just because you saw the stats go up. "yelling helps". When you yell you are expelling air which relaxes the muscles in your chest/back allowing the arm to move more freely. Prob why KJ does a big air expel when he throws bombs too. (Breathing out on drives helps me not tense my shoulder when I throw.)

Question for you guys: Can you take the tech disc outside and throw a distance line (high anny release) like Garret, AB, Wiggins etc? I feel like you can't throw that line into a net because it's too high, you'll miss the net. Or does the tech disc not fly like a regular disc due to the puck? Can you still get the "simulated" distance from this type of throw outside?
@OverthrowDiscGolf
@OverthrowDiscGolf 10 ай бұрын
Good question. Josh and I were discussing that yesterday
@tech_disc
@tech_disc 10 ай бұрын
You can throw the TechDisc outside to hit that max distance high-anny line. The TechDisc will fly more understable than a normal distance driver, but we only measure what you do to the disc, not how that disc flies. It would be fun to set up a max distance shot (high launch angle, negative nose angle, anhyzer) in the simulator and then try to match that in the field.

@@OverthrowDiscGolfI wonder if the software adjusts the distance based on which disc it is. I am going to poke around on their website to see if I can find any reason to pick one disc over another for this. I could see picking a putter if you plan to throw in a field because it is less distance you have to go to retrieve it for the next throw. If you are throwing into a net then maybe the decision depends on which disc fits better in your hand. Need more data before I make the purchase. Love the idea and a big thank you to both of you for doing videos on this product.

It actually helps our brace quite a bit and is easier to hit higher numbers indoors because of it. Eventually the goal would be to transfer momentum perfectly obviously but this is actually more efficient than blowing past the base.

It's not throwing far that is so beneficial, but being able to throw far that makes the difference. Being able to throw far mean you can disc down and not throw 90% power on shots of 300'. It lets you throw a putter inside 350' so you reduce or eliminate fade and skip. It allows you to throw a really over stable disc in the wind and still get 400', plus the reliability of not flipping the disc over and knowing it will fade predictably. Also, being able to throw far means your form is more refined and, if you don't need to throw max distance, you should be less likely to suffer from injuries. More distance is just a byproduct of better form, and better form improves your whole game.
