Now you've got to do forehand comparing one finger, two finger, three finger, stacked and pistol grips. One thing I noticed is that with otherwise keeping your throws the same as possible, that a one finger grip has a natural slight hyzer angle, and three finger had a natural anhyzer angle when compared to the other grips. I would love to know if testing data would back this up.

I'm very glad y'all tested the bonopane. I have rather small hands. It took a fair bit for me to dial in the bonopane, especially with the thumb position (for me the thumb is much closer to the rim so my pointer finger can wrap over and around my thumb) and Josh got it spot on with how it rips the pads of your middle and ring fingers, it does get better and especially when you start getting calluses, but I had plenty of blood blisters. I'm using it less now unless it's an uncommon-for-me wide-rim distance driver throw. Though, if putting in the work on a power grip can get me more controllable distance, that would be great. But it's also pretty rare where I am I ever need to throw more than 400'. I'm so glad y'all included the bonopane, but I think it really should be something tested after more experience throwing it. But of course it's all different for everyone. Bonopane has been the most comfortable grip for me for drivers since I started back in '08.

Good way to get nose angle down on power grip is to start your grip like the Bonopane grip, but then take your index finger off the top and wrap it underneath into a power grip. Helps get the disc at the correct angle in your hand.

I would love to see a front loaded power grip vs more of a back loaded power grip. I have a more back loaded power grip where alot of my torque and spin is generated with my middle finger and my pointer finger acts more as a guide and sits on the edge of the disc. I always felt like I could get more power if I front loaded the grip but can't find a comfortable grip, it just slips out early everytime. I feel like my hand is too small or something. Would like to see the science between the two

I was coming here to say this too. I did "power grip" for a couple years and then figured out power grip is more than one grip within it. I was working on everything else and never figured out nose angle until I realized the front load version. Now I can reach baskets 🙂

I was going through the Flying Disc Museum's catalog of old frisbee magazines, and stumbled on a Bonopane interview from 1980. "Although nearly everyone who tries it agrees that the disc leaves their hand more quickly with more power, it generally takes along with it vital epidermic tissue. The accompanying blood loss can also be a problem [. . .]" "So , if you 're in need of a little more power, not discouraged by blood loss and tissue damage , and can live with a year or two of control problems- try my grip." -Alan Bonopane, Frisbee Disc World vol. 5 no. 1, pg. 8-11 It's a really fascinating look at the state of the art at the time. Did you know that in 1980 the consensus was the sidearm had greater distance potential than the backhand?

Followup video idea on power grips; I'd be really curious about comparing 2, 3, and 4 finger variants. I feel like I get more snap more consistently when I don't use all four fingers. I have a theory that it's just because it helps force the pressure to be towards the front of the grip vs back when I don't have a pinky on, but curious if there's more to it than just mental

Wobble is caused by the deflection of the disc itself as it snaps back to flat after receiving rotational and directional forces. The pros should be causing a larger deflection of the disc as they power up and getting more wobble. The wobble doesn’t affect their throw because of the rpms they achieve.

@@Gh0stz9211 for sure. I may pull it out here this week just for fun to see what happens now lol. But yeah, I threw all backhand drives with it for probably 4-5 weeks and then went back to my 3 finger power grip and noticed nose angle was generally a lot better. Haven't really gone back since. But definitely a good teacher of muscle memory (at least for me) of the wrist angle since that pressure over the thumb forces it down.

Some of the most fascinating disc golf content out there! As a predominantly forehand thrower, I’m wondering if you have plans to compare FH and BH in the future? I out throw my BH by about 50 feet pretty consistently on FH, which seems to be backwards off the “norm”, so I’m curious to know how they compare in general to understand why that might be. The warm up session prior to the start of the data collection was epic!!! Here is a question? What is the added weight to a disc and or what is added effect of wobble, spin, speed etc that the tech disc product itself causes verses when its not there and does Tech Disc factor that into there own equation of data collection? I mean it has to create some drag right? And if it weights more then is it calculating your true arm speed etc? Or should you just assume without it there it would only be better?

I'm throwing 46-51mph consistently but I use the bonapane grip and yes it's weird as can be starting off for a week but I also modified it for me when I'm not trying to hit 100% max distance I'll put my index finger curled up next to my thumb it works a lot better but I have not gotten a problem with my middle finger until I got the net and thrown a couple hundred shots in one session using the bonopane grip then it started to blister, I probably could use more practice getting the angle down with powergrip but by wrist will not allow it right now.

Think the other variable that would be worth testing is hand size. I have small hands and cannot get four fingers on a driver, even three fingers is tough and doesn't give a firm connection. What I've found is that by using my middle, ring and pinky finger as a three finger power grip, and putting the index under the rim, I get the benefits of both the power grip (speed) and pain grip (nose down).

You were talking about how wobble makes the disc fly more Understable. I am not wondering how GYRO might affect the numbers. I always found any MVP/Axiom disc to usually fly more OS than the numbers suggest. What I’m wondering is if the gyro effect of having more weight on the rim actually actually works by reducing wobble which is what gives a more OS flight and that is what makes the disc more aerodynamic in theory. Don’t know if you read the comments a month later but it popped in my head so I figured I’d put it out there.

I would love to see a comparison of gripping the disc at 9 o'clock (or less) from start to finish vs the tendon-bounce, where the disc rotates clockwise toward 12 and then when the wrist reaches maximum extension, it bounces back to 7 o'clock right at the hit. Eagle does this when he wants to really crank on a disc. There was a slow-mo of him at DGLO I think where this was really evident. I'll see if I can find it and post the link.

It appears the min/avg/max a) speed and b) spin rate is slightly higher for power grip, but the min/avg/max c) wobble is lower for the fan grip. This seems to align with the common thinking that power grip gives more distance, but fan grip more control. Slightly. Wobble has a relationship with spin rate. Also wobble makes discs less stable - initially - but at some point in the flight the gyroscopic forces smooth out the off-axis torque. What that means in real world terms is a) the disc flips up more in the beginning, and b) the speed is reduced more initially. One thing to pay attention to with wrist position - curled vs flat - is to see how it affects spin and wobble, not just speed. In theory the greater curl should increase spin and minimize wobble, though I suspect there's a law of diminishing returns there.

@@OverthrowDiscGolf It is a statistical analysis method that allows to determine if means are significantly different between two groups of data. You can have the mean of one group (let's say for speed) being greater than the mean of the other group, but the difference might not be statistically significant. Several methods can be used for that, Anova being one of them. But I realize that the app developed by Tech Disc might not include such functionality. It's possible to do it in Exel with a bit of programming, or use open source stat apps like 'r', but it would require some learning for sure.

Considering the size of their data set, I would have just had each person throw only one set of each grip and then gone back through again with grip order reversed.

@@OverthrowDiscGolf oh I meant that you would have a break in the middle where the other two people would throw and then you would throw again going back up the grips. Sorry I wasn't clear there. I don't think the way you did it was bad, just that fatigue would have been even less of a factor. Anyway, great stuff! I'm nerding out on this series.

So 3 people who are good at throwing with a certain grip are better at throwing with that grip. Maybe someone who prefers the bonapane grip would also see performance drop if they tested a grip they hated.
