this scene makes my heart soar . What makes it so real is that Barry doesn’t turn from a push-over into a Man because he WANTS to. He changes from a lonely blue boy into a self-possessed person because he HAS to. and it feels so damn good to finally see him stand his ground for himself and his newfound Love.

well 98% of the times people change because they have to, not because they want to. The psychological pain is such that they cant bear it, that forces people to change.

@@user-oy3xl7zb7f good call, it does sound like that but it sounds more real that way. I checked the script and neither line is in it. It goes : "I'm a nice and reasonable man. I didn't do anything wrong. Please don't make me hurt you. And I'm telling you: that if you ever hurt me or if you hurt someone that I love.....I will hurt you many, many, many times over.....because it's not right to take people's trust. "

Mattress Man needing the last word is hilarious, but I also just like the way they resolved their conflict. While I do think Mattress Man felt intimidated and backed down, I believe there was a mutual respect between the two - Barry being pushed to stand up for himself and Mattress Man respecting that he did it face to face.

I was going through some stuff when I was younger. Nothing too serious to the extend of PDL, but Sandler's character in this movie really resonated with me. I felt out of place, angry, socially inept, and pathetic. I didn't lash out like Barry, but I felt like Barry. The way Barry is portrayed as "pathetic" but really he's just human was a big help to me, reminded me that my mistakes and faults were not because I was less than human. In the end Barry is strong, loving, and worthy of respect even though he has faults, and I think that applies to most of us.

they probably heard about how a guy they were scamming went haywire and beat up their crew in LA. they probably didn't get pushback like that and when Barry yelled at him on the phone it probably rattled mattress man. so he was already a question mark for him. mattress man seemed like more bluster than anything (especially without his crew).. so I bet when he saw the guy standing there in a kind of threatening way not saying anything.. and maybe he noticed the phone in his hand. he figured, oh this is probably that one guy who seemed unhinged, and got nervous.
