Lucy's intro was straight up character creation with her listing the perks she has, and the smile on my face damn near swallowed my ears when I realized it. In my opinion, I think all three central characters started in a Fallout game's (probably Fallout 4) character creator, then the director and writers developed them from there.

When I see each of them, I keep seeing like characteristics perks and stats popping in my mind. Norm is like Small Frame, hacking, intelligent and speech like he’s sister. Maximus intelligence is below avg, but not too low. Or maybe it is with he’s little dialogue. High charisma or luck? That people supports him despite what he’s done. Definitely “More critical”. He don’t fight that well but when he does get into it. Huge damage occurs. Killed the bear in just two shots. Took out first few of the raiders trying to get the armour after he woke up and got serious. The scientist definitely had high luck with the turret.

I was in the same boat, but I decided to try it out because I was desperate for any new Fallout content. It's honestly not awful, but it doesn't measure up to the other games. It's structured as an MMO, so the NPC's are more infrequent and have less to say than the other games. The carrying capacity is also a pain to deal with.

The game would be great - if it wasn't an MMO. It just doesn't work very well as one. If it was a privately hosted co-op, it would be significantly better. Being an MMO just makes the world feel inconsistent, the weird mix of solo and party missions completely breaks the gameplay loop and the server lag is very noticeable when others are nearby.

@MasterKjK I believe the implication is that the fall and the nuke are two different events. It seems like Shady Sands was no longer the capital of the NCR so the economic loss may have resulted in it going from a massive hub of civilization to a bit of a backwater. Or the set design people just made a mistake.
@joshuadarrow

I'm leaning on production mistake for that one. 2277 is roughly the same date as the first battle of hoover dam, and while "fall" could mean a lot, having the place nuked would completely overshadow anything that happened in the years prior to that.

I personally don't know any of the exact time lines. However, from what I got in the show was most of the time lines all came down to lies and propaganda from Hank and Vaultec which in my opinion seemed pretty smart from the showrunners so that it could be up to the viewers to fill the gaps with context from games. Perhaps Max or other characters will fix it up season 2. Also squires can be any age really, Max seemed like he kept messing up (or just getting unlucky with his Knights) which would make sense that he's an older squire. Correct me if I'm wrong, but that bombardment is something you can stop, yes? If so. @@Imfphas20 I mean maybe, but there was *so* much New Vegas stuff there in the last couple of episodes that I think the time for assuming that Bethesda has an axe to grind with the popularity of New Vegas is kind of over. It's been 15 years. Obsidian generally isn't interested in working on someone else's IP after all the bad experiences they had. I don't think there's a beef. And whether it was the showrunners or anyone else there were *clearly* New Vegas fans behind the wheel. Any implication that Shady Sands was bombed out of existence before New Vegas was clearly unintended. It's been clarified at this point that the bombing of Shady Sands is meant to take place right after New Vegas. Given that several (or was it just one guy? My memory is hazy so maybe I'm remembering the same thing twice or something?) Fallout veterans had already said that the expansion and growth of the NCR was taking Fallout too far away from it's roots and they would likely have gotten rid of it if they were still in charge of the story... I always felt like if we were ever to return to the West Coast in the Fallout series the NCR would need to be gone or fractured. New Vegas was kind of setting up for that, showing how the NCR was really crumbling under it's own weight even in a best-case scenario. Tying the bombing to Ulysses is something I would have disliked. I don't care if they retcon or pick canon endings for Fallout 4. But don't tell me my Courier straight up *failed* Lonesome Road or that the outcome was entirely different to what I achieved. That's not respecting Old Lore. That'd be disrespecting players. If they have to pick a canon ending for certain things I'm fine with that, but doing it just to somehow flex that they played New Vegas would be both superfluous and disrespectful of the players investment in their own version of the stories. Still, the fact that Ulysses *could* access and make use of an old nuclear base like that also makes it very clear that it's not a big stretch for Vault-Tec remnants to manage the same thing. So knowing the New Vegas story still helps strengthening that of the show in this regard, knowing that the ability to drop nukes wasn't just pulled out of a hat because the show wanted it's "Holdo Maneuver". If anything *not* tying it directly to Ulysses, but still being able to lean back on that as an indication that there's still plenty of un-launched nukes around shows that they *did* respect the lore established by Obsidian *without* feeling the need to rewrite it to stroke their own egos, I'm an Obsidian fanboy and generally don't like most of what Bethesda does. (Fallout 4 has good gameplay by the standards of the series, but dear *god* that writing.) But the whole "Bethesda has it out for *real* Fallout" thing is getting hella old and tired and quite frankly sounds like it's coming from a very childish world-view. It's a little embarassing to watch since pretty much any OG fan of New Vegas kind of has to be a full adult at this point.

@@HellaGust The presence of elements from FNV by itself does not mean much. There's plenty of OT stuff in the Disney Star Wars films but the lore is far from respected. The next part is citing opinions, not much to say there. Any future entry must accept various choices that were made by player characters. You could side with the Master in Fallout 1, but the lore (and those players who did) were not disrespected by Fallout 2 acknowledging an ending where the Master loses. I don't even care that Bethesda doesn't respect the old lore. But I don't like people peeing on my leg and telling me it's raining. NV seems to be a wasteland and that makes it feel like the events after the game are being made out to be well, swiped away or disposed of off screen. It's not fun. The issue I have with the show is that it feels like Bethesda's way to basically turn back the clock on the West Coast. The east coast Fallout (Bethesda's) is exactly how Jesse describes it. A Post Apocalypse that doesn't take itself seriously. Megaton is alone. Rivet City is alone. All the small outposts in the waste are basically alone. They dont' work together send trade to each other or anything. Fallout 4 introduced the idea of settlements. but it also shows that no one was really rebuilding in the east. Diamond city is the lone area, and your character basically rebuilds the rest of the commenwealth. Bethesda is stuck in the "Immediate Aftermath" mode of the post apocalypse. Fallout 1 was sort of like that, but they still had the Caravans. They had people going town to town trading water and goods to keep people together. it was already established. Fallout 2 expanded it, now you have actual functioning cities that are becoming like they were in the old world before the bomb. Fallout 1,2 and New Vegas deals with a POST -Post apocalypse. Dealing with the issues that comes after the dust settles and you go "what now". The story of those games dealt with what the answers were for "We survived, how do we now thrive?" The Master wanted to uplift humanity to be perfectly adapted to the new world, weather the people wanted to or not. Enclave wanted to just go back to the way it was before. To keep this short. What the Fallout TV show right now feels like, is resetting this world back to "Post Apocalypse". The Enclave has "somehow returned", The BoS was nearly wiped out in Fallout New Vegas, yet now are just as powerful as the NCR were. And the NCR has basically been reduced to raiders/settlers/vault dwellers. It feels like Bethesda shot the West Coast dead, and replaced it with the East Coast wearing a cowboy hat.

Not every enclave outpost was destroyed, there are three known that haven’t been touched by the game plots. As to the NCR, this great government entity was in absolute shambles during NV. So much so they were getting their ass handed to them by a group of raiders cosplaying as Romans. With multiple references to the main land deteriorating and losing control. So much so that you actively have to work harder to help them following their path in game with nearly double the missions. The game tells you outright nothing is ever going to change, there is no power that’s going to make the world whole again. War never changes.

@HellaGust
@HellaGust 5 ай бұрын
@@Imfphas20 House wanting to prevent the collapse of the NCR isn't necessarily the same as him succeeding in that goal if another player with greater influence decided they *did* want the Republic to collapse. I feel like what happened with Shady Sands happened *regardless* of how New Vegas panned out. And this would also let them be kind of vague on who actually won the second battle of Hoover Dam in the show. The big thing is basically whether or not House will appear in the show. Beyond that what happens in New Vegas only matters to the survival of the NCR if we assume that there weren't forces *outside* of the New Vegas factions working against the NCR, which the show confirms there being. So while New Vegas isn't retconned, no particular ending is more or less appropriate than any other. The Legion could've won then fallen to bits after the death of Caesar, leaving the Mojave more or less as it was before the Legion and NCR started fighting over it. Or the NCR won but fell to internal power struggles regardless of the attempts of House to keep that from happening. Or the Vault-Tec remnants or other nefarious organizations we have not yet encountered (*is* there actually enough of the Enclave left for Wilzig to be from there, or was that misdirection?). To anyone in that meeting of corpo heads or those following in their footsteps the NCR would be the biggest threat to their idea of letting humanity wipe itself out and then coming in to pick up the pieces. Any number of hitherto unseen factions would have had the NCR in their crosshairs. House's reach in the best-case scenario didn't really reach beyond the Mojave. Without help from The Courier he could barely keep The Strip in line. You're right that Ulysses nuking the NCR would be one of the end-states most likely to trigger the republic collapsing even before Shady Sands was nuked. But I find it fairly unlikely that the showrunners is gonna tie the NCR's collapse to any particular choice or quest outcome achieved by the player in New Vegas. New Vegas was generally making a point of the potential collapse of the NCR looming large even if the Legion was defeated. Caesar in his megalomania saw himself as the arbiter of civilization's salvation by forcing the NCR into a shape that could survive through a conflict he was never expecting to win in the long run. Now I do think Mr. House is boss enough that they might well have him around in Season 2 which would make a specific ending canonical. But they could also just pass it off as the *real* House having survived, hiding somewhere while waiting for all the chaos to blow over. Or have that final shot of New Vegas be a bit of a fakeout and not dwell there very long and just leave it vague. Lots of possibilities without needing to commit to a hard retcon.

The "Fall of Shady Sands" being in 2277 feels like a production mistake to me. Bethesda's official line in that the 2277 "fall" and the nuke are different events. According to word of god, the nuke hit Shady Sands shortly after New Vegas in 2281. That said, I don't find this a reasonable or satisfying explanation when all the stuff with Maximus and Lucy's mom imply the fall and the bomb are the same event. Also, there isn't any dialogue in New Vegas that implies that any event that could reasonably be called "the Fall of Shady Sands" has befallen the capital of the NCR 4 years before that game even began. So, that's why I think this is just a mistake on the show's part.

The part that gets me with the dates and how the new California republic is portrayed in the show is that it feels like the show, and by extension, Bethesda, are trying to ret con the the first two games and New Vegas out of existence. Now I have no confirmation of this, and like Jesse, I'd love to have a concrete answer as to what is going on and when things happened. However, I do know that Bethesda has been pretty salty that New Vegas always gets brought up whenever they release a new fallout title, and I wouldn't put it past them to try to retcon the entirety of the west coast fallout series.

Shows/Movies that show of the world and tell their own stories in those worlds, showing the interesting lore around them off, seems to do well. Think Fallout, Arcane, Edgerunners, Last of Us, even the recent DnD Movie. But we also get showrunners who think "they know better" and dont really want to connect with the franchise they are making and consequently dont understand why its interesting in the first place. Thats what happened with The Witcher, Halo and the WoW Movie.

I loved the series, with the exception of the Shady Sands stuff. I like the sets, Walter being a goblin, the dependency on real world props and not CGI, its depiction of brutality in the wastes, Power Armor actually looks and feels badass. There are no real good guys and morality is slowly being chipped away in the best of people. I want the Mysterious Stranger in season two so bad and Lucy being, 'What the fuck?' I'm not fond of the destruction of Shady Sands because it may set a precedent I don't like. I don't want Shady Sands to be destroyed, but it happening is not anathema to me; bad stuff happens in the wasteland all the time. It's that it was destroyed to prove some nebulous point that "surface dwellers bad, vault dweller good" and that Lucy's mom took the kids because she didn't trust dad. Dad then killed thousands and made an enemy of the NCR... and nothing came of it. Shady Sands getting destroyed ended up being as a means to make a bad guy look bad without any of the fallout of the actions of committing a warcrime. Where are the bounties for his head? It's just such a major thing to change with so very little payoff. I do not understand. I get why New Vegas players are worried and upset because they don't want the same thing to happen to the city or Hoover Dam.

My own two cents on the Fall of Shady Sands ; Bethesda should just admit the TV show goofed up and made a minor error. Was Shady Sands nuked in 2277? If so, why did President Kimball fly over to New Vegas from irradiated ruins? Did it fall in 2277, but only get nuked later? If so, what does that mean? Wasn't the city getting nuked unrelated to any of the NCR's domestic problems? Or were those two events connected somehow? If so, how? Was the nuke just a very nasty cherry on top of a radioactive pie? It just feels super confusing and inconsistent to me. Anyway, in the grand scheme of things, it doesn't really matter much. It's very tempting to give in to righteous nerd rage but sometimes the smart thing to do is to go outside and listen to the birds sing instead.

So they need to have those factions mess upp and fail time after time or there will be no Fallout. This is also why they are never erased completley so they can be used the next time a faction get's to strong. So yes NCR is out there and so is the Enclave and all the rest of them. @@Imfphas20 Yes minor parts is the key words. But NCR didn't play a minor part they had almost all of California, and then the Legion had almost all of the midwest. Let's say the NCR was still there and Lucy left the vault, then what? All she needed to do was to go the nearset NCR police station and report the crime and then sit and wait for the NCR to deal with it. Fun show that would have been. Todd confirmed that it's after 2281. The timeline does indicate that the nuke came after the fall. Even in Fallout New Vegas the NCR wasn't doing hot, was spreading themselves too thin and I don't find it hard to believe that Shady Sands was in peril too. To explain the blackboard. The fall of Shady Sands is the start of the decline of the capital of the NCR. They were really spread out by that time fighting a war on too many fronts. Then New Vegas the game happens. We dont know what the canonical ending is yet that will be revealed in season 2. But some time after the canonical ending of New Vegas a nuke goes off in Shady Sands because of events in the shows. That is why they are 2 separate events on the blackboard.

Except that's not "Fall of the NCR" but "Fall of Shady Sands", which are far two different things. You talk about the Fall of the Roman Empire to talk about how the Empire declined over centuries until it was no more, you talk about the Fall of Constantinople to talk about how a city was destroyed, conquered or pillaged during a war. So it either means that it is indeed nuked at that date, or it means that someone fucked up while writing on the props.

imo with the NCR stuff, it is not the point of the (or at least my) complaints, that the date is a bit off (or not). Its the feeling, that Bethesda just always disliked the fact Fallout Fans like new vegas more then any Bethesda Game (not all of course, but a fair amount). Even if the timeline would be perfectly fine, it just feels.. petty that everything established in the west is just open to be burned to the ground and overwritten by the "Bethesda aocalypse feeling" (meaning outside of small shanty towns everyone is just out for themselfs, no one even tries to really rebuild and so on.)

I got into a discussion about the same thing (the timeline stuff) with someone else too. This is what I came up with (sorry for the upcoming wall 😅). SPOILERS obviously. Looking at timelines and such: - The "Great Plague" that supposedly took Rose's life happened in 2277. - Shady Sands (presumably) wasn't actually nuked by Hank until roughly 2282. Here's what I think likely happened: - In 2277, Rose realized society had already reestablished itself nearby without any help from Vault-Tec. When Hank tried to convince her she was wrong, she refused to listen, and took Lucy and Norm with her out of the vault into the Wasteland. - Hank quickly found them and took Lucy and Norm back to the vault without Rose. - Hank and Betty cooked up the "Great Plague" of 2277 as an excuse to quarantine everyone, in order to cover up Rose's disappearance and figure out how to deal with Shady Sands. - Hank may or may not have tried to convince Rose again to ignore that the Wasteland was populated and thriving (as much as one can thrive in that environment). Maybe the time between 2277 and 2282 was spent trying to find a nuke to wipe out Shady Sands with. That bit is very up in the air. - In the meantime, Hank likely gaslit Lucy into believing that she'd never gone with Rose into the Wasteland. He wouldn't have had to do much to manipulate an upset child into believing that what happened wasn't real, especially if he'd already told her that her mother was "dead". - After that, Lucy's mind decided the memory of the sun stinging her skin while playing with Rose was just something she imagined. - Around 2282, Hank finally nukes Shady Sands.

I think the main difference with the more successful shows is the games they come from have a vague lore to play around. Fallout and Cyberpunk have a story that your customized citizen can follow, but is just one person in a large world. Because of character creation, the player feels more connected to the world than the story. LoL has brief summaries for each character background and connections but is still loose on a lot of the finer details. These allow for creative freedom without upsetting their respective fanbases too much, even while retconning some of the broader strokes in the lore. Halo, on the other hand, is a game where you play a specific character through a very linear story. You aren't wandering wastelands aimlessly with your rando character or cruising Night City looking to start some trouble. You are Master Chief, focused on following one objective at a time, and there are no side quests. Hell, the script is practically written already. They just needed to attach marketable talent, and the biggest name that I can see attached to Halo is... Bokeem Woodbine. The reason The Last of Us worked despite being a linear story was they attached some relatively bigger names, Pedro Pascal being the main draw due to his recent success on The Mandalorian, but also Bella Ramsey, Nick Offerman, and Storm Reid, as well as various voice actors from the game itself making cameo appearances, like Troy Baker, Ashley Johnson, and Laura Bailey. It was just an all-around more marketable product than Halo.

I understand not wanting to touch 76, I really do. That game when it launched was a slap to the face of every fan of the franchise, but After trying it out now? In 2024? It has gotten SO much better and definitely deserves a shot in current day, ESPECIALLY if you are a Fallout fan. Fallout 76 captures the unpredictable sense of the wasteland to the letter, the game has interesting characters as well as choices involved with said characters that feel impactful, the community is so welcoming, and is probably the BEST sense of roleplaying I have ever felt in a Bethesda game (IN AN RPG!!! IMAGINE THAT!!!!!) Is it perfect? No of course not. It is a Bethesda game at the end of the day and I know that's a big grain of salt to take, but if you're willing to give it a shot there is something magical in those Appalachian hills. I've heard people call this game "a 7/10 game, but a DAMN good 7/10 game" quite a few times, and if that sounds at least a LITTLE bit compelling, then maybe consider it when it goes on sale. I remember finding out that Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening was a direct sequel to LoZ: A Link to the past (I found out circa 2004, over 10 years after the release). My head exploded, because Zelda games just.... didn't have "sequels" or "continuity," each was kind of its own thing. And I just got used to that being the way of it. So, the TV series having different continuity than the game, really doesn't *seem* like a big deal. I remember watching the Watchmen movie in theatres (and V or Vendetta, to a lesser extent), and *knowing:* things were different from the comic books, because *movies* are not *comics.* These are adaptations, definitionally: things are going to be different.

The way I saw it was the fall of Shady Sands was the first battle for the Hoover Dam in 2277. So many NPCs you talk to in FNV say how the NCR is stretched too thin and corrupt now. Then the nuke happened right after the events of FNV. Keeps the timeline intact just fine, and anything we get about the Lucy and Maximus backstories not lining up time-wise is just them being unreliable narrators (they were kids, makes sense)

Hey Jesse. Just a few notes on the whole timeline thing and how it isn't much of an issue really. For anyone worried about spoilers... Why did you watch Jesse's video but I will push it down a bit. ... ... ... Hank took Lucy back in 77 and told everyone a plague came and locked the Vault so when Lucy who was too young to remember or had some level of amnesia inflicted upon her she is told later her mother died in the plague in 77... Then Hank told Vault-Tec in Vault 31 which likely has some level of control or possible contact over other Vault-Tec resources or perhaps the Enclave and these outside sources only managed to nuke Shady Sands after New Vegas from 2281 to 2282... This basically leaves New Vegas plot intact as while Shady Sands may have started to FALL which by flexible definition could mean decline, be under siege, suffer some slow disaster, become decadent to others or breaking away from the NCR in 77 onward was still likely considered part of the NCR until it was nuked in 2281 or later. For whatever reason this fall was not enough to drive Lucy's mother from the city and Moldiver was not seemingly caught in the nuke so likely was away from the blast. The fall of Rome was not said to have happened instantly and not from just destruction but self destruction or others thinking them too decadent. The show is set in 96 so we can do some math to determine ages. Hank was unfrozen in 68 so he likely went to Vault 33 then to marry his wife. Lucy is the oldest child and looked at minimum around 5 to 6 years old but if we use her actresses age as of now it is 7 years old. So in 77 she is 7 so in 96 she would be 26 to 27 years old. Her younger brother would be thus at maximum 24 years old. She also did 10 years of "Cousin Stuff" so she likely did so from age 14 to 16 if it is what the show implies so 24 to 26 for such fits fairly well. You could even consider with how innocent she could be she may have dated her cousin from say 10 with kisses and such counting and stopped dating him earlier than this. Maximus looked to be around again maybe 5 to 6 so but if we use his actors age of 8 he would be 8 at 2281 or later. This would make him around 23 to 24 at 2296. Both could be older or younger but not by much but I likely think they are both as young as the various things allow since both of their characters seem young and passionate with youth and inexperience or a level of naivete. This leaves the timeline intact...

From what I can tell, the complaints around the "retcon" are because it's pretty much only effecting New Vegas, the fallout game people liked the most and the one Bethesda didn't make. Obsidian got screwed over when the game came out because the review scores were tanked and now the show seems like it's trying to pretend New Vegas never happened. I've never personally played New Vegas but I've heard people go on and on about how it's the best (and how much they've hated Todd Howard since), so I think overall the discourse isn't just "That's confusing, why did you make it confusing" but more "Why do you keep doing this to New Vegas Todd Howard you bastard!!!! *shakes fists*"

I want to preface this with saying that I thoroughly enjoyed the show. It really captured the essence of the universe and the feel of the games. However, there were things that stood out to me as... not top-tier choices, I guess. Purely in terms of being a narrative medium, that is. For one, I felt the casting of Aaron as Maximus and of Moises as Norm were strange choices. They're good actors, but for Maximus I did not think his performance suited the character. For Norm it was the same thing, he acted both older and younger than Lucy, and, well, it was simply a strange choice to me. Don't get me wrong, they're 7/10 choices, and I'm happy with them, I just don't think they were slam dunks. Then there are the plot holes. I don't even know if they're holes, they're just nagging details that are right there in front of us. For example, why did the NCR become raiders in order to infiltrate Vault 33 and stick around for a wedding ceremony at all, and then murder everyone, when all they wanted was Hank? Why did they not also grab Lucy or Norm if they thought it would make Hank more pliable? And Hank should've immediately clocked Moldaver, too - why didn't he? There's also the thing where they leave with Hank and blow up the Vault 32 entrance, where Moldaver tells Hank to choose between Lucy and the other vault dwellers. Except... the choice has literally no impact whatsoever? And then there's a thing of the Vault 32 entrance being left completely unguarded, even though the overseer clearly knows that it's possible for people to clear some of the rocks and come through. They don't know that there are no people left on the other side. If anything, they KNOW there are people on the other side, because the "raiders" left through there - who knows, they might have left their vault door open to the wasteland and let anyone wander inside. And why, oh why, were the V31 people doing what they were doing? I understand their original purpose, but why were they being thawed one by one to be overseers for V33? Maybe that's my fault for not making the connection, but it just did not make sense to me.

Shady Sands, since people seem to forget or miss the billboard, was no longer the NCR Capital by the time it gets nuked. The billboard also shows the population of it to be almost 40,000 people, but the games say the NCR has a total population of over 500,000 (think it was around 700,000). There are more NCR controlled areas farther north like Reno, which is probably one of the possible locations they moved the capital to. The NCR is not gone or wiped out, they've just lost their southernmost territories. Judging by the end credits sequence of the final episode, they might have made an attempt to take New Vegas, or to reinforce/assist it, which probably drained their resources even more.

I think the simple answer is that they wanted the timeline to be vague. "The fall of Shady Sands" happened at the same time as the First Battle of Hoover Dam. So I think Fallout fans were already use to every Fallout property being its own thing. On the flip side, I think if the Halo showrunners decided to just tell a story in the Halo universe that wasn't about the Halo or Master Chief, I think people would have been on their case about, "How dare you not give us stories about the things we care about!" I think any game series that revolves around one character or group and their storylines are backed into this awkward corner where they either get stuck having to do a faithful adaption, or risk the wrath of the fans if they try to do their own thing. It's been a while since I've played New Vegas, but I'm trying to remember if Shady Sands was ever referenced as being the CURRENT NCR capital, especially by any actual NCR characters. This potential retcon doesn't bug me, regardless, but if it's never mentioned as being the current capital, as possible easy explanation is that it fell in 2277 like the show says, and the NCR move their capital elsewhere, but info is obviously slow to get out into the world, so any books, terminals, random wanderers who still think Shady Sands is the capital could just simply be out of date on their info.

It's really weird that people are hung up on the dates. That you need to cross-reference multiple things and take a bunch of (potentially unreliable) narration as given. When there's so many giant glaring plot-holes in the show. I binge-watched the show. I really liked it. It kept me engaged and entertained. But now I'm thinking about it and there's so many things that just straight up make absolutely zero sense. Like the inciting incident. There's a triennial exchange between Vaults 32 and 33. Which in context should be every 3 years. So there's at least a dozen people in Vault33 that were born and grew up in Vault32. And not one of them, not a single one of them, noticed that absolutely none of these people coming from 'Vault32' were people they knew. That the "New Overseer" was someone they had never met and never heard of. The Vaults aren't that big, you get to know basically everyone. That's why the incest thing is a problem in the first place, and why they even need to do these exchanges. Because everyone in a given Vault are at least close to family. That's just one issue. But there's a lot of them in the first episode alone. So many things just don't make sense the more you think about it. And you can make the argument to not care about these things and just enjoy it. But you can't make that argument when you're hung-up on cross-referencing dates from the games.

I think... the date issue is probably a calendar problem. Like, how do you know what year it is if people didn't have any calendars for a few post-apoc years? Or just didn't think it was important until way after they started to rebuild. People wouldn't all lose track the same way, and in the vaults, well... vault-tec's time-keeping would be about as trustworthy as everything else about 'em. So you'd need to check with a couple surviving vaults to know the date by the old calendars.

Didn't maximus say that the bombs fell 12 years prior. It's played off like the brotherhood is just rewriting history, but i tbink its ment to be hes telling lucy about the bomb that destroyed shady sands. Which would make the timeline work because then shady sand was destroyed in 2284. 3 years after new vegas

I loved it aswell. So much to talk about, but the Fallout references were so seemless it was beautiful. The organ harvesters. was such a classic Fallout "quest" and of course you come out with a ton of loot, after wrecking havoc. The Waterchip reference! The whole contrast of Coop and Lucy. He is the maxed out player and she is the fresh new player. Or max in skill vs max in morals. It was also very topical, with the past scenes and the power of the private industriel complex. But that is a whole other discussion. Really good actors all around. Gotta correct Jesse a bit tho Maclean and Mclane is not the same. Norm the actor and character was great, but it threw me off how little they looked alike as a family. Last but not least a retorical question: If you have a Vault where fish and human interbreeding in a theme. Where does the Caviar come from.

Mediocre. I for see poor intent, that was cut, and reshot. Likely will make its way back in. But greatest isue, is who is this really for… Its not well written for new viewers, does little to introduce whats even happening on screen… to an outsider its often just random chaos of loosely tied together story.. And for fans…. Well they dont really know the lore, or half the setting… but throw out member berries they themselves don’t understand. That being said the plot is laughable. Things just sorta happen, people coming from completely different directions just meat up… time and time again. And Vaults one of the funner writing exercises were written so dully its mind boggling.

I've never played a single Fallout game, but immediately after watching the series, I began looking stuff up online. Don't get me wrong, I loved the show, I just wanted more information about the world of Fallout. That said, I will absolutely dog pile on the steaming heap that is the Halo show. I'm not even a big Halo fan, in fact I would argue that Halo simply stole the plot from the original Metroid game, but I couldn't even make it through the first season before I was like, F*** this show. Another video game adaptation that kind of did the same thing as Fallout, was the need Mortal Kombat movie. Rather than try and follow around an existing character from the game, the movie created a new character, had them interact with game characters, and ultimately told a new story.

My real only problem with this series is that it's connected to the games canon. It's just puts limits on what the show can do. And, you are inviting fans to call bullshit, when the canon doesn't match. If you are OK with playing loose with the canon? Then just say the show is it's own thing, and no one would care. And, there are so many games, with so many endings to those games, how can you pick 1 ending from all of them, and try to make it work? Why even try? What this honestly feels like is Bethesda flipping the bird at the people that think Fallout 1, 2, NV, are better games than the ones they've made. Which I am not one of those people, I love all those games. It just honestly feels weird and petty.

At frist, i wasn't erally a fan of seeing the BoS going even further down the route from Fo4 but then I thought "Hey the story just started, maybe they're painting the BoS being like thatso maybe Maximus, with his idealistic ideas, can start making some changes". So now, I'm just considering it as a starting point, not just for the BoS but for everyone storeyline and hope to see some devlopement in the next season.

Agreed Jesse except for 1 thing: The whole rewriting the narrative of story we already know isn't just a video game thing. It's a Hollywood issue. Anime, games, comics, simple remakes, and so on. It's always an issue. Just tell me a story in the world that might also need a little telling. That'd be great. Also I am huge fan of binge releases. If there's anything I am growing to hate it's a weekly release schedule.

There is one thing I really didn't like the Fallout show, and I'm not really seeing a lot of talk over, is the SA scene at the beginning? Lucy's introduction (spoilers) of having sex with a literal Raider is coercion, straight up r*pe, and made me really uncomfortable that they were going to do a surprise pregnancy plot line since the entire point of them having sex was to have a kid. I'm only 4 episodes in, so I'm not sure if they touch on it again, but it's a detail I never got comfortable with.

I'm not a fan of the NCR being hit like that. It's not enough to make me hate the show, more sigh and be kinda irritated when it comes up. And it's for a bunch of the same reasons I dislike how the Star Wars sequel trilogy handled the New Republic. It feels like the setting's kinda getting hit with artificial stasis - make sure it's just like how everyone loved it in the games, right?! But... that makes it feel kinda trapped in amber. Like they won't really let anything happen to it.

i think there are 2 types of game adaptations. World adaptations and Story adaptations the world adaptation is far less about the stories of the games and far more about capturing the world and its style. generally the games that work better for world adaptations are things like RPGs or more open games with a sort of anthology style to them. games also set outside our world. stuff like Pokemon, Warcraft, Fallout, Silent Hill, Cyberpunk, Zelda, Mass Effect ect work far better with this kind of adaptation. Story adaptations are games that have specific stories they tell or worlds not expansive enough that they restrict you to using specific main characters. Mortal Kombat for example needs to be about a Mortal Kombat Tournament, its story is just a function to get certain characters to fight at certain times, and in order to make that not too confusing jumping you into like the 2nd or 3rd story its just easier for a Mortal Kombat movie if you adapt the first games plot. Mario is a story that you cant really separate from the "bowser kidnaps someone" storyline so regardless what you do it needs to be about bowser kidnapping someone. The Last Of Us does indeed have a more expansive world of stories to tell and its adaptation does make some big changes from the games, but its hard for the narrative to escape the fact that the story people want to see is the father daughter dynamic and that Ellie Joel relationship, Tomb Raider and Uncharted needs to be about Lara Croft and Nathan Drake finding ancient artefacts the refusal to do one or both of these leads to a bad adaptation. if you're adapting GTA or RDR then fine but you need to make it about the story of one of the games because the world of GTA isn't rich enough owing to the fact its near enough our world so what's the point why not just make any other crime/western movie. meanwhile if you made a Warcraft movie with a focus on trying to just tell the lore in the games it asks the question "why am I not playing the games".

I really think if they'd just put a freakin date under the bomb on the timeline it would have cleared a lot up. It's the only point in the timeline on the chalkboard that doesn't have a date on it so people got confused and I totally get it. The fall of shady sands and the nuking of shady sands were two separate events, the latter happening almost immediately after New Vegas according to Todd Howard. Still, "The Fall of Shady Sands" raises so many questions.

Good take Jesse. My problem is that The New California Republic spans entirety of California, It has 5 states within it, If Shady Sands was destroyed, what happened to the other 4 states? All i am wishing for is a rational and lore-accurate status of the NCR, If what we see in the show is litterally the last of the NCR then it has ruined fallout for me.

I'd rather shows or adaptations be creative and different than just be a run by numbers straight translation of the original property. I want to see newcomers bring in new takes and introduce new ideas make things fresh and shake up the status quo, those things make a franchise move and grow. I saw the first episode of the second season of Halo TV and as a long-time halo fan, I liked it. It just seems that a lot of older halo fans have a stick up their behinds about the show; that is upfront that it's not set in the same continuity of the games and books, being upset about it not being the games, and you can tell that they don't pay attention because they would simply do something else other than whine about it like children. As for the Shady Sands timeline confusion, it could be part of a mystery to think about, or it could also be a flub of dates, who knows until we get interviews asking those questions. The Brotherhood being more and more bad guy like is definitely a set up for them to be the big evil bad of a game sometime in the future. Even in Fallout 4 the former Lyon's Brotherhood of Goodguys have turned into more like thugs and zealots rather than being diplomatic under the direction of the more og BoS aligned Maxon. That in of itself is a small story of how good institutions can be corrupted to become evil. I think that they have put the NCR on the backfoot to really challenge the faction down to the wire and make characters and stories about dealing with that. Consider this also, the good endings in Fallout games have always been cannon up to a point, Fallout 4 and New Vegas are more murkier and as you said Jessie, they don't hold your hand, you have to think and consider all the options that the game presents you and think on what would happen to the regions and characters outside the limits of the game. Those games endings aren't really tied to Karma as you can be both good and evil on any of the factions in New Vegas even with the factions that are black and white. For Fallout 4, it doesn't track Nate/Nora's moral/Karma standing because the game doesn't deem it to be important but rather WHO do you choose to support and rule the Commonwealth. It doesn't want the player to be sitting on a fence, it tells you to choose which faction lives and lets you stew in your decision without judgement outside of the companions reactions, and I think for a fallout game is pretty mature.

From my perspective fans seemed more worried that Bethesda is trying to sh*t on Obsidian and Fallout New Vegas by retconning stuff. Fans have the feeling that Bethesda is still jealous that gamers still think New Vegas is best of the new Fallouts. So the destruction of Shandy Sands and possible change to New Vegas itself, seems to many fans as the final stab to kill New Vegas (the game) forever. To the point Obsidian came out and said that is not the case and fans should not think that.
