I went through three different manifold assemblies before getting one to seal up totally. I will go get everything else welded up and then it will be as quiet as new.

New subscriber here. I am glad to have found this! I have a 1985 Dodge D150 truck with only (just turned) 26k original miles on it (I have known about the truck and original owner for quite some time) and it has developed a manifold leak and I can't stand that noise so now I know what type of gasket to buy and have put on! Thanks again!

I gotta confess that someday, I hope to also make videos in which I wrench on old vehicles. Maybe someday when I get out of school and have some money, I'll get into it. Your videos are truly inspiring, and every time I watch one, it reminds me of that goal. Can listen to you talk and watch you wrench all day long, haha. Keep up the excellent work. ~Vandal

I fix all intake/exaust manifold leaks by taking them to the machine shop and having them faced on the gasket surfaces!!! By refacing both manifolds and getting all the warpage out they seal and don't leak again!!! Everything works so much better once everything is square and sealed!!! I've done countless from Chevys to Ford's and even a Dodge!!! Mill your manifold and your problem is solved!!!! Keep Rocking!!!!

I like to think you and I would get along great, the problem is we are a lot alike,(we both try to fix things correctly, with quality in mind) so we may clash, but I feel like I could hang out with you all day and just absorb the energy. I'd offer to help but if you're anything like me you probably prefer to do things yourself so you know things are done the way you want them done. I like vids where you talk and explain things. Keep going I'll be watching.

One tip I can give you on working on a Chrysler from the 60s and 70s is go ahead and mount a second ballast resistor to the firewall that way when it goes out it's 30 second job to switch the wires you will thank me when you are 30 miles from home on a Sunday night in the pouring rain

I have learned that shit happens when you work on old cars! When we were kids growing up, if the car broke down, you walked! So we learned from necessity to fix things. Later on, I figured out to be fearless with working on cars because if a human built it, a human can fix it! I now let nothing hold me back, and if I can’t figure it out I find something that will teach me to……

Nice to see..I remember it well..firstly that choke system was on the earlier slants,ones fitted with Holley or Bendix single barrel carburettors..Carter twin barrel had a choke mechanism in a bakelite cup on the side of the air horn (carb upper section) which had a simple pipe attached which h went down and through the exhaust manifold...By now all those steel bolts holding the exhaust system on will have been weakened by heat,and can easily be snapped off..all too easily..I myself would replace the exhaust manifold with a header/extractor system..which is more efficient than the original cast iron one..and replace all the bolts with new ones as I went..I would also replace that Holley carburettor while I was about it..none if the single barrel carbs were any good, there was Holley,Bendix,and Carter models..in later Valiants there was the even worse Carter RBS ..You could install a FISH carburettor instead,which is FAR better...I notice your car doesnt have a brake booster,all our models of that year did..should be easy to retro fit..regards Bob

The slant engines are good my biggest complaint about them is the nylon gear for the distributer. When you do a tune up on them and pull the rotor in the distributer it breaks the nylon gear at the bottom of the distributer

Those manifolds often crack and warp. I now save the cracked ones because they can usually be used to make a split exhaust manifold. The exhaust manifolds from the '80s are less likely to crack As for simple Fords, get a Maverick. There is a electric chock kit that is popular and worth the conversion effort. Braise the hole for the chock stove.

Thanks. Looks like you oriented the triangle and conical washers correctly, but can't quite make out in the video. That throws a lot of people off since opposite of what seems intuitive. you want the cone sides facing the nuts. www.slantsix.org has a detailed writeup. If you don't orient correctly, the exhaust manifold can later crack. I had a 1969 Dart 225 for decades. That Holley 1920 carburetor drove me nuts. I went thru ~4 rebuilt ones before I found one that made the engine idle extremely smooth. All the others caused a stumbly idle and even dying leaving a stoplight. I had mechanics tell me "intake leak", "bad valves", and such. After a whole new long block and same poor idle, I knew it must be the carburetor. They have a sealed metering block which can get clogged and most rebuilders don't fix that nor test them. A later Holley 1945 carburetor is apparently better or many people switch to a 2 barrel "Super Six" manifold (Volare/Aspen) or a 4 bbl aftermarket one (Clifford of Offy).

I also have an 82 Dodge D150 with a slant 6 that I added the 2 bbl intake to I used a Holley 2280 and trashed the lean burn system for the earlier style Chrysler electronic ignition (4 pin orange box) and it immediately ran cleaner than it ever did with the 1bbl and the lean burn ignition but I've been thinking about installing a Weber staged 2 bbl made for the jeep straight 6 that came with the Carter BBD 2 bbl carb and since mine has a manual transmission I don't have to mess with an auto trans kickdown linkage

I've learned over the years to create a professional gasket of any type you place a piece of paper over the part to be gasketed ,,secure it as best you can w/ tape then take a pencil & move it back & forth over the surface to create a traced pattern on the paper ,,now you will have a perfect replica of the gasket you need ,,then take your drawing & send it to Cometic Gaskets ( you can find them online ) they will create a professional gasket in whatever material you desire & in a few weeks you will have your hard to find gasket professionally made .

If all the nuts are off the bolts its probably just stuck on..just tug on it a little or put something between the runners and pull a little..it should pop loose..biggest issue on exaust manifolds on a slant is breaking the studs trying to take them loose

A Holly 1946 Ford carb. can replace a Holly 1945 Chrysler carb. The Ford carb. has a choke on the carb. whereas the Chrysler carb. has the choke on the manifold. It's the same except the chokes. The kits are the same. The Ford carb. mixture isn't adjustable. The float level may be different. That carb. isn't a 1945 or 1946. EBAY has those chokes. They costs! Slant 6's may have the heat-riser.
@moeshouse575

here is a tip . DO use anti-size compound on exhaust bolts. then when putting them on only tighten to 70-80 % of full torque. they after 4-6 full heat cycles take to full torque. NEVER EVER use a cad plated bolt or nut.

Hello from a subscriber down under! I wish that I had a $1 for every Valiant I bought with a cracked exhaust manifold. I would be $30 richer lol. Headers became cheaper to buy than factory manifolds. Mainly as one resto place sold reconditioned ones with a new operational heat coil. Did you say that your exhaust manifolds are 2 pieces? Ours are all one piece and used to warp and crack. I really enjoy your channel. Best of luck.

I need to push myself into tackling my old car, I can do an oil change but that's about it. I'll be damned if I'm going to pay a mechanic to fix it though as it has a lot of sentimental value to me but the car itself is practically worthless. It needs timing belt, thermostat and a radiator fan which isn't a lot really but I do get anxious about it and think I'm going to screw it up. As you say though if I do then I'll just have to fix it there isn't much other choice. It's in my driveway so I've got as long as I want to work on it without anybody bothering me.
