There is a very specific procedure in the factory shop manual for reassembling the intake/exhaust manifold assembly to the engine. If this is not followed carefully, you're nearly guaranteed a cracked manifold and exhaust leak. You first loosely assemble the intake to the exhaust via the three bolts that you mentioned. I believe one of these bolts was missing when you removed the unit. Use a Remflex gasket set. The flat metal ones, and also the larger gasket that goes against the engine, are worthless and leak all the time. Remflex gaskets are far superior. Install a Remflex gasket between the intake and exhaust, leaving the three bolts a bit loose. Now install the intake/exhaust onto the engine using the larger Remflex gasket and torque it to 10 lbs. You must use the original factory fasteners, which include brass sliders on the front and rear studs and a conical brass washer on the center stud. If you installed the hardware store fasteners that came on the engine, you just wasted all your effort and it will crack. When the intake is torqued down, go back and tighten the three bolts that connect the intake to the exhaust. In doing so, you have allowed the mating surface between the block and the manifold to adapt to any irregularity in its flatness. The Remflex gasket will do the rest and seal everything up. Yeah, it's a pain but you gotta use the right gaskets, the right fasteners, and the right installation procedure. Anything else is just a waste of time and money, and you'll soon have to do it over the right way. Go get yourself a FSM (factory shop manual) and it'll work out great.

This was helpful thanks man. I’m 18 and my first project 79’ volare has a slant in it and I’m trying to replace the gasket. My struggle is having an A/C compressor in the way. AC is a blessing and a curse lol.

Yeah sonoften so much stuff has to come off to make a simple repair. One thing I have found is filming the things I do makes it very easy to reference incase I forget how something was installed.

My buddy just got a dart slant 6. In the trunk of the car is a 4 barrel Clifford intake with the longer runners. The motor has the factory 1 barrel intake and carb on it. If we were to swap the clifford onto the motor, what is the proper CFM 4 barrel carb that should go on top? And also, is it worth it to do in the first place? Would it make a noticeable difference in power?

With no other power adders the the /6. Id say small 4 barrel 400-500 cfm maybe smaller. Everything i have heard says the intake and exhaust upgrade is a significant shot in the arm. If you decide to use the Clifford adaptor and go with the 2 barrel I have a good weber that would work well with it. Either way thats an awesome find !

Was an absolute pain. But was able to reach in with a universal and long extension. Putting it back on was even worse. I taped up the universal to stiffin it and hold better position

Those manifolds only torqued to 10 ft lbs. to begin with, and going from a slant to a 360 isn't an upgrade. JMHO

I believe the outer bolts with conical washers torque to 10ft lbs and others torque to 15ft lbs. I did er to the higher torque since it had leaked with previous. I agree the 360 isn't an upgrade in quality of engine. But it is a power upgrade and is easier to find parts for. Plus it would be a free swap I appreciate the feedback. Alway good to hear Thanks so much for the comment!
