The mopar slant 6 is such an underappreciated power plant. Always loved them, so smooth and plenty of power on tap if tuned properly. I still remember my old man towing a 74 seater Leyland bus for 300+ miles with his Valiant Safari wagon. Up and down serious hills and valleys without breaking a sweat.

You might want to hook up the throttle pressure linkage before you cook the trans, and the vacuum advance goes to ported vacuum, not manifold.

Yes you will SHRED the clutch discs with no throttle pressure linkage! Set it to have the throttle lever on the transmission be fully rearward by the time your carburetor gets to wide open throttle. It is better to set it so the carb stops even a little before WOT, as long as the trans lever is all the way back! Needs full line pressure in the transmission!

In 1971 that engine had 145 hp and 215 lbs of torque from the factory. The 4 barrel carburetor and header dual exhaust should bump up that number quite a bit.

My oldest son bussed tables and washed dishes to save up his money to buy a 75 Duster. We worked a week of my vacation to put a 400 big block in it. It made for a mean little ride. Its life was ended when a drunk and stoned person rear ended it with another vehicle. I was amazed that the rear glass was still intact as it stuffed the trunk into the rear seat. My son drove it home, with me following close behind. We were going to put a trunk pan in it next, I'm glad we didnt now. My son sold it for the engine and what parts that could be salvaged. That was a sad day. The local police didnt even give the other guy a ticket. At least the other car DIDN’T drive away. The rollback driver had a hard time just getting it loaded. Cheers Terry

Just a quick tip, when pulling spark plug wires with the engine running, run a small jumper wire from the plyers to ground, you can loose the big glove, the spark will never hit you.

Slant 6 Was my first hand-me-down. I spent countless hours learning how to work on cars on that old two door. Before you swap out the automatic for a manual try putting in a shift kit. Back in the day I installed a B&M shift kit and it really helped wake up the transmission. I’m talking tire chirping good times!

Really interesting tools for tight spaces, I only do drum brakes now and again, but I need those tools, having a spring shoot across the garage, this is not nice! its a very interesting project, it really needs a manual, or at least a harder shifting auto and a way shorter final, would like to see the potential of that Straight 6 (neat to see the exhaust note change so much after valves\timing advance)

I wrote pretty much a full article on another comment above and it hasn't seemed to work too let them know about this Mopar Trans. And the incredibly important linkage that is on the Trans valve body that controls the pressures and the shifting points to work properly and not burn the clutches and drum liners in a very fast way. Even if you're in first with the shifter it's going to only get the idling pressure and not really hold the clutches tightly for very long and it creates a lot of extra heat in the fluid. I hope that they put a piece of linkage or something like a TV cable on a gm Trans and it literally will act like a totally different car!

But that A904 Auto Trans has a very important lever for telling the Trans how much throttle it is seeing and it literally will adjust the entire pressure for holding the clutch pack more tightly and it also tells the Trans when to make shifts at the correct speed and the kick down is also done with the same lever and it makes the valve body work in a entire different way and it will make a massive difference in power delivery and can use the torque converter to create a much more torque and way more power when it is not fighting the entire parasitic loss from it literally only seeing a idle amount of holding pressure and it makes everything work twice as hard with no torque multiplication and the sun gear and planetary gear will not work correctly. This will wake it way up! Good luck. And it literally needs a four barrel that is a more adjustable across from front to back so the end cylinders doesn't run as lean. BP

Your washing technique is getting way better. Wet car, foam cannon, and then do a good rinse with the power washer. If that power washer is anything higher than 1700psi, you’ll damage paint on most cars if you get it too close. The magic erasers are a good idea. I just don’t know if you need them. You could use those microfiber wash mitts. The ones with all the dangly microfiber fingers. You just need to use like 4 or 5 on a super dirty car. Then use the magic erasers on the hard stuff since those are mildly abrasive. You are usually doing a cut and polish after anyways, so I may not matter. Keep up the awesome videos. I’m always jealous that you get to spend that amount of time with your dad. Plus you both have such a good attitude while doing frustratingly hard work. Rock on

Boy, you weren't kidding about the ineffective pressure wash. Never seen one do such a lousy job removing dirt from a car body. Magic Erasers to the rescue! Watch Bad Tree productions on KZbin here because 2 of the guys on the channel are running built small blocks but they just did some modifications to the 904s using Cope transmission parts and kits to modify the transmissions for the cars they not only drive on the streets but race at the No Name Nationals . They just had build videos of completely going through those transmissions showing the mods done & why they were doing these mods such as eliminating the kick down & using full reverse manual valve bodies and one of the transmissions they set it up for a trans brake so check them out .

The 727 is a 3 speed. The A-518 is a 727 with an electric overdrive. The OD can be operated with a simple toggle switch.

You watch one slant six video and up pops suggestions for others.... and so my brain (74) kicked in and remembered a slant six duster I had since new and then parked when money improved. I had probably more snow machines than anyone should ever own.... hence a slide draft carburetor set up in the making.... I put one on every cylinder and it would lift the tires off of the ground for about twenty feet. The weak point was a three on the column shift... scattered every transmission that I put behind it. I adapted a M22 from a chevy and it held till it blew up after a ton of races and just ran out of oil. A outfit in Minnesota builds superchargers for these and they make over six hundred horse power. Its a all custom setup but can you have more fun in clothes than that

I haven't watched the entire video yet, but that 225 sounds awesome. It's DEFINITELY got an aftermarket cam, headers, an Offenhauser intake, a Carter AFB Competition 4bbl carb, and some slight ignition mods (at least a coil and wires). It could be a little fun, but I know that it would leave me wanting more...especially with that automatic trans...but it definitely sounds good (exhaust wise) for a 225!

Slant 6's are definitely a powerhouse, but they sure are indestructable. Had a 1973 Dart Swinger when I was a kid. Ran forever and outlasted the Dart!

How do we get ahold of these guys when it's really important that they need to know about the Mopar A904 Transmission has a level to control the line pressure and the shifting points and it literally will just eat it in a incredibly short time. I can't believe that it was so apparent that the converter was just blowing right through the flash point and it gets incredibly hot in just a few minutes of it shifting from 1st to 3rd in 75 feet. But even when you manual put it in the number 1 location/First gear it's still on the idling pressure of the valve body! And I was also very surprised by how little oil was in the valve train station area where it is normally spraying around a lot more from the center feed tube ? I seriously think that was a very fresh build and it literally was not ever broken in or even possibly ever started? I just don't know how to get ahold of them before it's too late and ruined. I built a few of those and I used a lot different carburetor (Holly 500/600/650/700 on a supercharged one.the edelbrock is a very good bolt on most engines and runs. The slanty is very easy to get the longer port's of the intake runner's that can go to a very lean situation where it is more than just regular driving. But a Holly is more capable of being adjusted more like a single port for each 2 sets of runner's and sometimes you can use a couple different heat stages lower in the farthest cylinders and literally is a ton of lost information on these engines. But they are wicked good in the lower Rpms for torque and power and depending upon which one that engine came from it is very possibility to have a early Forged rotating assembly in the bottom end and it might have a newer version head for the adjustable valve train and more flow etc. I just wish I had a good way about how to tell them what to look for and make sure that they have the oil pump engaged and not just a very limited amount of pressure?

Brake tools are great but sometimes a regular flathead screwdriver is the only thing that works. Vice Grips come in handy.

1st 3 cars were Slant Sixes, one bare bones with 3 spd floor shift, rubber mat floors. Plymouth made a "Fleather Duster", lighter weight, increasing mpg.

Mine was a 74 Green on Green had power steering but manual brakes. Only car I ever did front drum brakes on. So easy to service. Still have drums on the rear of my 90 Mustang they seize up but get free easily. Cylinders were $12 each I still have them to go on but the old stuff still working. Less is more in so many ways.

My uncle rebuilt slant-6's back in the day. Souped them up to 400+ HP. Shipped them to Europe where they replaced finicky factory sports car engines.

I’d check the kick down cable, if that’s not right it won’t run right or shift right. You can burn up a transmission pretty quickly, but the gears are definitely hurting it performance wise. Keep up the great work guys.

I was going to say the same!, Lots of folks don't know that's not just a kick down but also controls the throttle valve in the Trans that controls the shift points!, It will be in 3rd gear in 20ft without it hooked up and will smoke the Trans!!

My mom had a Gold Duster back in the day. Had the slant. Never got to drive that one. Think it was t-boned in a parking lot. Pops sold it soon after. I did have a 77 Aspen in school, and bought another Duster both 6 slant. I’d buy another if I could find a good one.

I ve had a 1977 volare fast back, a 1976 Aspen 4 dr sedan, a 1977 Aspen 4 dr, and a 1976 Voare wagon, all wqith slant 6 motors. My last one i had was the 76 Aspen sedan, i bought for $525 in Seattel in 2001. I finally retired it to a wrecking yard in March 2020, after the third used tranny went out. The body and under was badly rusted, as i had it in the midwest since 2010. The second motor still ran good though. It hurt so much to say goodbye to it.

When I got my license driving my mom's Duster in 74', the 6 wasn't blinding me with power. Yours definitely deserves to be brought back to her formal glory. There are not a lot of options on the 5x4 bolt pattern. My 68 Valiant has them as well. The BVD bolt pattern (Baracuda/Valiant/Dart). A-body only. Looks like a 7-1/4 rear-end. The larger 8-3/4 would have a drop out center section. Loving the MOPAR content!!! Thank you!!

What a great little car, I had a 1963 Dodge Dart convertible (as in the photo) in 1971 and that had the 225 slant six motor, with the push button gears, I loved that car but unfortunately it was quite rusty, I remade the door tops from sheet ally, as they had rusted away, and repainted it, plus I put a sidewinder exhaust on it, as was the fashion of the day, and had the accessory feet for the throttle and dipper switch but unfortunately old yankee cars have gone through the roof here in the UK, can't get one for a couple hundred quid now 🥲 Luv watching you and your dad working on these vehicles, keep it going 👍

I made Fifth Place in the July 4, 1962 Pikes Peak race in a 1962 Duster slant six. That car will hold the curves on loose gravel better than most any car in the races.

I really love the GMC motorhome but I really like the Duster. The Torqueflite transmission was a pretty good transmission overall. Check the transmission filter ASAP as over the years I have found that it can cause a lot of problems. It's a real fine filter and will plug up easily. Worked at a garage and when people thought their transmission was bad we just replaced the filter and slippage stopped. They thought we were awesome. You could also shift kit it and kind of manual sift when you wanted. Please don't put an 01 on the door. :-) So glad you got the brake tools. Always made me cringe when you did brakes also. Go get em!!

Slant-six may mot be the biggest powerhouse, but it has the advantage of being almost impossible to kill. Back it up with the right transmission and rear end, it'll be fine.

I've always been a big fan of the "leaning tower of power," the famous slant 6! You won't find a tougher, harder to kill engine then the little slant 6. They will run forever with the barest of maintenance.

Love Dusters/Darts/Demons/Valiants. Owned a few of them and wish I still had one of them again! slant 6 or 318 were all low compression engines and run the same unless you do some parts replacing. That burnt orange is my favorite color on any car!

I had a Dodge Dart with a slant 6, I paid $150 for it. It was rusted out somewhat in the floor, but that started every morning, even in the bitter cold. That was the most dependable car. It was my first car in 1977. I don’t even remember the year it was. Memories.

Check out Uncle Tonys Garage. He has an entire series that he's done research on the slant 6. I'm sure you can get more out of it. Also love this series and you should go all the way with this car. Budget weekend car cruise in resto.

Adjust the valves while running. It’s kinda bouncy but can be done and way quicker. Made a world of a difference on my old Slant
