You know what I found easier and cheaper than a dumpster? A junk removal service. They do all the work and some even recycle or donate things for you. You just point it out and they take it away. It was GREAT!
@MarriageMotherhood9 ай бұрын
I’ll definitely look into that! Thank you!

Yes! Rent the dumpster, do the thing! Because of you, I hired a professional organizer for my art room and my bedroom. It was EUPHORIC! It hasn’t been long enough to evaluate how I’m doing yet.

Also would like to say, if you don’t feel like you’re good at decorating, HIRE ONE! There are even online services that do this now. They can help you figure out what YOU like and the personality you want your home to have.

We did our 4th annual whole house declutter in the first couple of days of this year and it feels like this year we finally made it all the way to the bottom layer which felt SO GOOD. I have an almost 13-year-old who still likes her stuff so we are by no means a minimalist household, but they have come on the journey with me and they're now independently able to sort through and make decisions which definitely takes the pressure off me. I'm looking forward to another year of trying to release more than I acquire and spending more time having fun adventures together than managing items in our house. 🥰

Hi Jia 😊 I moved this year from Las Vegas back to Northern California and I got rid a few things I didn't need anymore The difference is I don't have children at home and I am living in a 2 bedroom apartment now. I hear you and I understand everything you are saying. I would enjoy watching you tackle the basement. That would keep you out of the stores until you need groceries etc. If you are willing to do a basement declutter I will thumbs up and watch it. Thanks so much for sharing 👍👍👍🙏

I have heard about a dumpster bag. You buy it and use for however long you need it and call for a pickup. I would recommend doing a section at a time in the garage and basement. That way you don’t get overwhelmed. Just keep setting appointments with yourself to routinely keep progressing and set a timer. I find this to be very helpful. I was happy with my decluttering until I had a leak in my bathroom. I had to move a bunch of stuff and it looks like a bomb went off in my condo. More decluttering when bathroom is complete. I have to stay elsewhere as I only have 1 bathroom. I definitely want to see decluttering in garage and basement.

I feel like I’ve graduated past the Marie Kondo method which I still love and use but now add the stipulation do I use/enjoy it at least once a year (Whatever that means for you in your life). I was keeping stuff that brought joy to me but I wasn’t using/enjoying it. Now that I’ve donated/given away the stuff I didn’t use I can appreciate and use the stuff I do have that is perfectly functional and pretty and still brings me so much joy more because it’s easier to get to and use lol. Too much stuff made me use less because I was overwhelmed. Now that I’ve honed in on to what I do use and decluttered what I wasn’t using I use the rest of my stuff more, I enjoy it more. Plus having that breathing room makes clean up/put up so much easier. I’m not finished by any means but I’m proud of the process and progress. Thank you for sharing your journey it encourages me!!!

For 2024, I'm taking a clipboard with a pen and hanging it on a hook near the door. Everything we donate, clean, organize or accomplish is being written there. It's a visual reminder of getting the stuff done and a praise board at the end of the year. Sometimes we get in a funk and think we didn't accomplish things, and that leads to that terrible "in over your head" feeling. Good for kids, too. They might get a charge in writing their own room accomplishments there. Maybe you can section it out on the board for the basement and have weekly winners for whoever is throwing away or organizing the most. Call in the troops. We love you!!

Renting the dumpster will really make a difference! When you set a time to rent it you will have an established timeline for starting that big decluttering the basement. You may even want to pick a spot down there and start moving things there that will be leaving - starting in a corner and maybe going down there specifically a half hour at a time, maybe 3 times a week. That way you will have made a beginning and when you do get the dumpster it will be amazing to have already have made a good start!

Our house is such a disaster. I really need to just do it. My goal this year is to buy less stuff and to buy second hand whenever possible. I keep telling my husband and kids to look around because at some point it’s all going into a landfill. We need less stuff!

I’m here still trying to declutter and shop less. Replace things that need to be replaced and not feel so bad about getting rid of things that I don’t need. My process is slow and I’m doing sections of my apartment to prevent feeling overwhelmed. Currently my closet is being the hardest. I don’t want to just get rid of a lot of clothes but I also don’t want to deal with storing so much that is messy and hard to find my favorites. So trashing what is too old is enough for now, but after I wear it one last time since it was washed I will wear it then trash it.

It sounds like you think the garage and basement are both a priority and both need done all at once. What if you declutter in 2 phases. *Phase is 1 obvious trash and donate. *Phase 2 is everything you were deciding on with more thorough sorting and decision making. Rent 2 dumpsters - 1 for Now 1 for Later 2 - 32 gallon plastic trash cans 32 gal trash bags-contract tough One trash can goes in the garage One trash can goes in the basement 2 - donate boxes for garage 1 for Now 1 for Later 2 - donate boxes for basement 1 for Now 1 for Later 2 boxes for returns - keep in garage so they are handy when you are leaving to return them. store, friend, library, etc You have trash cans to easily throw items away (or recycle), so when they are full simply take the bag out, replace the bag, and off it goes. Anything you are not sure of put it in “donate later” box. If it is still in that box because you really don’t want it then it is ready for donation. Return items right away, or put items in “return later” box. Of course any items you are keeping need to go where they belong. Good luck!

You mentioned that it can be hard to communicate your request that family be more supportive of your decluttering goals. Did it help that your MIL helped clean Ava's closet - did she leave more bought into supporting your clutter goals? If so, maybe ask others to come over and help so that they can better understand what you're trying to do and stop working against your goals?

Yes I would just order the big trash bin. And go from there. Getting rid of what you don't need. I would hire the organizer back just for that specific thing like your Basement So you won't get overwhelmed. Remember you have to pay for convenience. So you won't be mentally drained and frustrated. With the girls you have to teach them. Do they really want something? Or it's just because they see it and everybody else have it. Tell the girls get what it's beneficial to you and not because it's a trend. It is beneficial to make that list and get what you need. That stops a lot of it too
