I relate to that question and this video on a deeply spiritual level. As I've gotten older, I've realized that I'm not nearly as expressive as I'd like to be, and that coupled with not always knowing what to say in social settings makes me come off as super awkward, boring, and maybe even a little mean. I don't want that though! That's not who I am. This video has made me think about some things.

This video is really eye opening. I have the same problem. Pair that with my shyness and you get a girl with a lot of barriers and missed opportunities for friendship. Before this video, I viewed my speech and shyness as "not my problem". If someone misunderstands my monotone voice, it's their fault for judging before really getting to know me. Also, I know people who have big reactions but constantly roll their eyes behind backs - aka fake people. So I've never had a desire to be less monotone because I thought it would seem fake. Now I realize that this IS my problem, and it's preventing me from living my best life. I need to start changing. (Speak Yourself!! Connects so much more now!)

The secret to charisma: try to make people feel good. People want to be around people who make them feel good about themselves. Laugh at their jokes, compliment the nice things they do, etc. It's not fake--more than anything it's just letting people actually know how you feel. Sometimes I think something is funny but it may not naturally compel me burst out laughing--I can still summon up a chuckle for something. I mean, think about it--I'm willing to bet that when you think about the most charismatic and like-able people you know in real life, they are the people who make you feel good. So try to make others feel good. Even just doing little stuff like trying to give a little laugh here and there will make a difference. And making other people feel good makes them want to continue that--so they'll try to treat you well too.

I recently met a person that speaks in a pretty flat way, with rarely any kind of inflexion and emotion when speaking and that have had a tiger parenting style. I wonder if she is happy or is just afraid of showing emotions... Seems that is as expressive as Kane at the beginning! Very interesting... as she is from Asian descent too. Wonder if it has to be with the kind of parenting. I think this would be useful for her... but probably doesn't appreciate some else to point this out... even she is already pointed it out herself.

True! And the problem is he comes as unexcitable cause he's montone. He hadn't even realized how he sounded like and, as he discovers when talking to Freddie, even when in his mind he was very excited about something he wasn't able to show the emotion through his face or voice. And that's because he'd been instructed or conditioned all his life to hide his personality, his emotions and thoughts, as he finds out later.

People always think I'm angry or think theyre annoying me when in reality I dearly want to be liked by them and joke around. my 2 years of college were absolute hell for 2 years I couldn't make any friends and since I was so dry, direct, insecure and overall just a quiet person and even when I thought I was being nice I was so scared they thought I was being sarcastic when giving them a compliment .. I wish I could go back and redo all of it. this video gives me a little more hope that I can open up but I don't even know how I got closed off to begin with lol

I have this problem at work :( Everytime i arrive to a new place people think that i'm aggresive or annoyed or something like that. If i try to speak gentler, on the other hand, i get ignored or passed over. It gets better after a few weeks or months when they get to know me but it's really annoying and a bit saddening.

I got to see Kane speak at BU and he was amazing on stage. He put a lot of passion and emotion in giving his speech, which made his message really shine. The little things he included, from the little jokes to the concept of saving face, made him really relatable as an Asian American and most importantly as a person. Meeting him in person was even better as he was really sweet, kind, and patient even with people like me who were simply too starstruck to make coherent sentences. Thank you Kane for coming to BU, giving such an amazing speech, and being an awesome person!! ^_^

It's a really impactful carreer. I was also discouraged through the first half of my undergrad, but when I started treating people with real disorders like aphasia or dysarthria, I began feeling that deep change in their quality of life, and it became an amazing and rewarding experience. Just to put things in perspective: from all the pathologies and disorders we are taught to treat, the one in the video is not even one of them. And even then, it made a huge difference in Kane's life. Imagine the kind of difference you make when a post-stroke patient recovers speech. Or when you help an elderly person with Parkinson's Disease to be heard in between the noise of a crowded nursing home.

If you want to do it, then go for it! I'm an SLP and I think the misconception a lot of people have about us is that we literally just work on speech sounds (e.g., lisps or stuttering). In actuality, we work in a lot of different domains (cognitive-linguistic impairments, swallowing/feeding disorders, receptive/expressive language impairments etc.,). One of the domains we can work on is social communication. In fact, one of the clinics I know of in Chicago works with many adolescents and adults on social communication (e.g., in the work setting, for dating, etc.) and they even work with companies to improve communication throughout the whole team. Many speech-language clinics provide consults where individuals can go and explain their needs/desires re: communication skills and see if it would be the right fit for them (e.g., SpeechIRL in Chicago) - this way they can get a better idea of what's possible without having to commit to therapy. If a private speech clinic is cost prohibitive, sometimes a university clinic can be the better route because you'll have a grad student working with you (typically supervised by a certified SLP) so the cost per session is lower (e.g, Northwestern University's SLP clinic). Hope this helps anybody reading/passing through here.
