I think even people that aren't content creators can easily become empathetic to his message, it takes a minute of thinking how they'd feel in his position and a lot of people that have uploaded a photo of themselves on social media might recall having similar feelings to what Raz is conveying, or maybe writing an essay in school and not receiving the reception you hoped for.

I think everyone has an audience, even if for most people it's just classmates, teachers, colleagues, bosses, and clients. Some of these give more concrete feedback than others, some of these give more wrong demands, and others still might just silently enjoy or ghost. But I can say for sure that I don't envy the ratio of silence and silly/harsh demands that someone with hundreds of thousands of eyes deals with.

Also your dumpster diving series has been a great side adventure until we can sink our teeth into Elden Ring, and the new Age of Content can begin again. I think it was Stephen King that wrote for just his wife. Whenever he had to decide if something should be included or not, he’d think about whether his wife would like it, and use that as a guide. I wonder if that mindset helps. If I draw or write or record anything I tend to think of the Void. This shapeless infinite thing just behind my desk that’ll suck in everything that I let go. And it doesn’t like anything, it doesn’t hate anything, it just consumes. Somehow that helps me let go a bit easier, and not worry too much if it was time well spent. I don’t have to stare at a finished drawing for days anymore, wondering whether I should delete it or post it or just let it be. Now granted, I get five likes on anything I do on a good day, but that pressure to deliver for my audience was still painfully there. I think that’s there for everyone nowadays. (Half of Bo Burnham’s stuff is about exactly that feeling)

This reminds me of a comedian once who claimed he liked to stay on a topic making jokes until like 1 person laughs, and that joke was just for them, and then he moves on. I feel like it's ok (great even?) for creators to cater to the kind of creations THEY want to make, or to a minority of their audience, and sometimes the rest of the room will even laugh along with the 2 people actually in on the joke because it's funny all over again how specific or personal it is. Certainly, we can all entertain a tangent once in a while.

Personally, I would love to see combination videos like "Top 5 videos I never made" that are just short ideas from different games/genres/subjects that don't necessarily have to be connected. Like the Graybles in Adventure Time, or Zeltik's mini-theories, or anything like that. I would have thoroughly enjoyed each of the potential videos that you put in this one, so I encourage you to put them out even if it's just a short idea! A good take doesn't have to be a long take!

Same. It's what I want from the channels I love. It's why I'm here. But I also get that not everyone feels like that, because I know I'm watching channels I love suffer because the creator is daring to be themselves and not everyone wants that.(Though other channels in eerily similar situations are thriving so...) But yeah, I see the fear is real.

This majorly resonates with me. There's an infinite struggle of scrambling for unique topics, striking something you're excited about, only to realize you can't stretch the discussion more than a few minutes, and becoming discouraged from even bothering to try and salvage it into a bigger idea. Worse yet is the destructive self-criticism of feeling like reviews, breakdowns, essentially any attempt to analyze existing media feels like a vapid supplement for original thought-provoking topics or compilations. It's so easy to get a backlog of 20 ideas and hate every single one just because it's "something nobody needs to hear about", it's "something someone else did faster than me", or just "something nowhere as ambitious as I want to be". I hope you can find a creative routine/schedule that fufills your drive and keeps you busy, lest you fall into the seductive pitfall of being your own biggest critic, dismissing potentially meaningful coverage of subjects as unworthy of the effort.

It's incredibly depressing that I'm not surprised to see so many of my favorite creators of all time in these comments (yes I'm talking about you, mister). I think when people say "I would listen to you talk about anything!" it means a lot more than that. It means that you - both as a talent, and a person - cannot "fuck up" in the way you're worried you will. It means it's impossible to lose everything with a video, a string of videos even. It means it's impossible to make something that the _majority_ of your subscribers would dislike, because it's you. You got where you are because you do what you love, you cannot lose what you've gained doing what you love, even if it's really very different - your love and passion will always _feel_ like your love and passion: just look a Joji. Think about it this way: there will always be preference, but good food is good food. A master chef will never make a bad meal, and the meals they love making will _always_ taste the best. Make it earnest, do what you love, we all know you won't allow anything but the best you have to offer. Even if you're not super proud of something, we'll be proud of it - you're already too good at what you do to do a bad job, and nothing you try will ever turn out _actually_ bad if you're excited about it, even if it might not meet your own expectations. That's what that means

Yeah, something I didn't go to in depth about (but allude to when talking about the algorithm) is that there are plenty of topics that I think people would be interested in watching, but YT doesn't give them much of a chance because they aren't pushed AND ALSO people are less likely to click on something that they don't recognize even if the contents of the video would be really interesting to them.

And hey! I also stole my username from a piece of media I liked as a kid, so I think this whole KZbin thing is a shared experience :)

I may have subscribed just for those videos but it give me a chance to also look at content that comes after. I feel creators should embrace that “who would care about this” mindset (easier said than done) because it might A. Kickoff a new type of video people up liking or B. Give you a base video you can tweak for the next one if you still wanna try to make the new video stick.

You see the comments from other creators, we all absolutely feel this. It's the nature of the game and the line we have to walk considering the platform the KZbin Algorithm, and lets be honest, the viewers that inform that algorithm, create. Video games are wonderful, but boy, would I love to talk about sports. Would I love to talk about anime. Would I love to share a recipe. To have the freedom to, without harming my viewership, make videos on whatever I want whenever I want? I'd be drunk with power and creatively firing on all cylinders. For what it's worth, I've found a unique challenge in "relating" those weird topics into gaming. Connecting pro wrestling to gaming every Christmas is by far one of my favorite projects of the year and I think it's because I get to talk about something different but also because I get to flex that I *can* stay true to my channel's "roots" and yet still talk about something that excites me. Of course, easier said than done, but that's always given me a little bit of a loophole to hit those strange topics. Haven't finished the video yet, but Raz you should 100% do some sort of "creative dump" video on a regular basis where you stitch together smaller essays together like this. Somehow, I think they'd perform well :)

As a viewer I love when channels explore their other interests because its a reminder of how multifaceted everyone is. Like as someone both into gaming and survivor I got way too excited that he was talking about survivor because its unexpected and I feel a sense of "im not the only other gamer who also has this interest". Outside of that, some content creators I follow have branched out and I think at the end of the day I'm still watching for that person's personality abd what they uniquely bring to a topic.
@AnotherDuck

A "creative dump" video seems like a good way to judge audience interest before actually creating a video on a topic. I mean, it's still only going to be about the few of us who comment on videos, but that's at least better that second guessing all by yourself.

Y'know one of my favorite videos on another channel actually finally explained to me why people like watching sports AND why Super Smash Bros is one of a very few games I can enjoy just spectating. It's the most I've ever enjoyed any content about sports and it helped open my eyes and build a bridge to relate to others I never knew I could. It seems in many cases that passion and care for a topic shines through expectations, so long as you can find a bridge of relevance to bring folks with you on the journey. That video invited me into a space I never understood and made me feel more at home there and in my own space. Who wouldn't appreciate a piece of media/content that can do that?

Rather than go on about how I’d watch your content just because it’s yours, I want to tell you why this video is probably my favorite from you so far. Your content tends to be very well reasoned, interesting, and relatable. It comes across as a smart guy just being passionate about stuff, and that’s fun to see. You’re not some top of the line comedian or musician or anything (unless?) but that’s part of what I enjoy. You’re just… talking about what you want to talk about. It’s very real, and it cuts out the superfluous bs that usually riddles KZbin content. This video is no different. You’re being honest about your opinions about a topic that you care about. But this time it’s even more real, and even more humanizing. Thanks for taking risks like this, thanks for putting out good content. You rock man

Thank you. Yeah, especially while making this video, which had me running around parks filming various views with an actual camera (something I have very little experience with), I thought a lot about how I am kind of a professional amateur, and that frankly, a lot of people on KZbin are. I think that is part of what makes this such an engaging platform. You see creators grow as the learn stuff and sometimes can even be a part of helping them grow. The downside for creators is that we don't know what we are actually doing a lot of the time, and are just trying are best to keep above water.

@@razbuten Raz, I feel like I certainly don't comment enough on your videos, for which I do apologise, but I hope to make up for that in some small part here. There may be a tad bit of oversharing and I do hope I don't go too far in places where my awareness of things is shaky, but I need to find some way to convey how your content makes me feel. Since the start of 2020, the last year and a bit has been the most challenging time of my life, being stuck in a house with someone who has been growing increasingly harder to live with. Multiple times over, your videos keep a smile on my face and I cannot thank you enough for all the times where you helped me to get through the day. I've not seen Inside yet, but I've been thinking about it a lot, since CJ the X's video. In the same way as Schaffrillas, Scott The Woz and Jacob Geller, I am fascinated by the new takes on topics that you offer us to think over. I would love to see videos on Starkid, on Survivor and how people would have different ways of playing through a campaign of D'n'D. I'd even love to see more videos in this vein, combining grains of ideas together, as a means of highlighting a greater issue or topic. That said, I'd imagine that there's a whole host of variables to consider, in terms of the algorithm and audience, that I do not have proper awareness of. This is getting rather long at this point and I didn't set out with a proper conclusion in mind, so the ending may be a little messy, but I hope I can return a bit of the hope and happiness that your videos instilled in me, when I needed it most. I hope you are safe, with everything going on right now. Thank you for trusting us with this video.

Yeess!! Oh god. It's too real... I think this video does such a lovely job of showing the other side. What creators struggle with on a day-to-day basis. But that we also feel the need to shelter and hide our struggles, out of fear of THAT being poorly received. I found myself relating to every little point made. I've been going WAY off what people know me for lately, and it's shown in the numbers. But I can't bring myself to make the videos I "should" make each and every week. Grateful + Terrified. That is the best possible way I can think to sum up the relationship we likely all have with our audience. It broke my brain when you included an ad break IN the video. Very well executed. A great gag, AND effective marketing! I love the idea that "Inside" unwrapped every creator/youtuber's brains - and forced us all to acknowledge that more complex, more insightful, and more creative videos are attainable. Thank you for helping raise the bar! But also F*** you for raising the bar as high s you have ;) Also. Survivor is great. Glad to hear from other fans who are still watching it!

I'd still be interested if you rambled about a thought you had for like five minutes because the way you tell these things is very engaging. And, well, it's like you said. Some people will like it, some won't. Most won't share their opinions on it until you try, and that's nerve-wracking. A risk. This reminds me of something else: A gaming focused creator I follow recently started making non-gaming content on the side, and maybe that would be something that could help you, as well? To make some space for yourself, separate from your "main" stuff, where you could just let loose about, well, anything and satisfy your needs to make different things and find joy in it, while taking less risk and being able to experiment with what people like. I dunno. I am obviously not an expert in any of this, but I thought I'd suggest it anyway. Thanks for making the video. It definitely didn't suck.

As someone with a hard time focusing, I'd honestly be down with a few random 2-3 minute videos sprinkled in between your regular uploads. Sounds nice :)

I'm amazed at how many major creators resonated with this video. I hope it gets an algorithm boost and does really well. You deserve it for taking it upon yourself to say everything you did with that much thought put in.

Wow. The editing, pacing, cinematography and emotion on display here is simply incredible. A truly touching piece, Raz. Thank you.
