In 73 before I was graduating H.S. my friends dad was going to sell me his 61 GMC 305 V6/4 spd 4x4 pick up. Real clean & straight. Then backed out. Fast forward to 93 and my girlfriend bought me a 63 GMC 401 V6/4 spd 2x4 pick up sight unseen but supposed good runner, from northern Az. Got it delivered and it did run good. For a few minutes. Coolant ran straight thru the block into the pan. Made a bunch of calls and those that had even heard of the 401 V6 just said "Good Luck!". 1 old timer service tech at a GMC dealership said he hadn't even seen one in at least 20 years and that I would probably have to get a big loan, have the block welded, machined & cross my fingers. Sad day for me when I ended up selling her to a guy with a custom car shop who had been looking for a project. Glad you have had better luck and keep us updated please.

@mikedavis65663 жыл бұрын
Definitely seeing this as a road trip vehicle. Set it up as a cruiser/camper and pull a trailer with your Car and Cameras toys. You may want to put a few modern utilities (power disc brakes, high power alternator for all the on board goodies you can install) on it but the body style would really let it stand apart. It needs the 'It'll Be Fine' logo on the side done conservatively. That should really be a keeper! Keep up the good work, love these videos.

My Dad had a 1961 GMC half-ton, short wheelbase pick-up with the 305 V6 that was converted to propane. that was a great truck. He drove it until 1970, and then he gave it to one of our farm workers who drove it for many years after that. That was the first vehicle I drove when I was 8 years old on our farm. I drove the truck slowly along the side of the road, and my Dad & my brother would walk along the side picking-up or putting-down irrigation pipe. I remember the floorboards were covered in a thin rubber, and during the summer the transmission hump (I sat in the middle when I wasn't driving) would get so hot that I couldn't put my bare feet down on it. Good times!
@fasteddy9173 жыл бұрын
I was told in the mid 60's that the V6 was made to be either a diesel or a gas engine. That's why the spark plugs are where they are. The hole could also be used for a fuel injector. I don't believe they ever made them as a diesel for whatever reason but they were popular as gas engines. Wonderful old truck and it would be great to see it repaired and used. I had a few of them over the years.
@turbo84543 жыл бұрын
The 351 and 478 versions of the gasoline V6 had a diesel version called the Toro Flow. The 637 V8 also had a diesel version.

I worked with a guy who had a GMC pickup with that same V6 in it. That had such a unique sound to it. You always knew when he arrived at work because nothing else around sounded like it. I seem to recall that V6 had gobs of low end torque. He drove thing thing forever. Funny story. In the early days of synthetic oil he decided to put some in that old V6. It seemed that every place oil could leak from, it did. He got mad and said, this stuff is crap and went back to regular oil. I think the real problem was that old engine needed new gaskets anyway. The synthetic just revealed that fact. Anyway, they seemed be good engines though I seem to recall they weren't real good on gas.
