With this video i realized it’s not that i don’t like shiny keycaps, turns out it’s just the uneven shine on some keys that’s been bothering me. 🙌 you’ve really got lots of patience! Great work!

Exactly! Most of us don't like the uneven shine, but with enough patience we can just turn the used sets into somewhat brand-new-looking ones!

Really cool! I just got my GMK Red Samurai's and I was kinda fearing for the inevitable uneven shine that'll develop.. But what you did looks super awesome and now I know, that if I really hate the uneven shine down the line, this could be a possible "fix" to make it look awesome and even! And I guess by the time you've finished shining them, you never really have to worry about anything again, regarding the finish! Loved the video!

This is great! I think if you divide up your time wisely, you won't lose a lot of time. If you are spending 1 hour watching shows every day, use that time to shine several keycaps. In on month, you should be able to shine at least one or two sets!
@TheDredgenProject
@TheDredgenProject 3 жыл бұрын
Great video man! Really interesting. Does this make the surface of the cap smooth or is it mostly the polish that makes it shiny? You think it's reversible with an ultrasonic cleaner?
@Magniboards
@Magniboards 3 жыл бұрын
Nope, it's shiny. The friction causes the edges to shine. If you use a rotary tool with max speed, it will melt the keycap. I showed a sample for both in the video.

Regular shine from usage comes from wearing down the plastic from the friction of your fingers. I wonder how much of the shine here is from friction and how much is from the plastx product? In any case the results look nice! Thanks for putting in the work and sharing your results! Mabuhay from California
@Magniboards

It's definitely 95% from PlastX. The set of caps I got had a matte finish, no shine whatsoever.

Does direction of polishing affect the shine at all? Not so much the quality of the shine, but if it causes any directional distortion. There is no way in hell I am not doing this, only reason I just picked up a set of ABS caps.

I got shine on a few of my gmk wob. Will this method apply to make my set more uniform in terms of shine? Legit question since my wasd is noticeably shiny af
@Magniboards
@Magniboards 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, for gmk, it does take a while though due to the texture, but entirely possible. I tried it on one shined gmk keycap but it does take a long time by hand. When using a tool be very careful because a hard enough cotton head and fast speed can melt the keycap due to friction. Make sure you apply a lot of polish to reduce it.

I personally wouldn't do this on a set that wasn't already heavily shined. This will remove some UV protection, and you could introduce more rapid yellowing on the lighter colored caps. If the keycaps are already jacked, then evening out the shine makes sense.

@@ducttaperulestheworl lol this takes like 10x longer than lubing switches. If you had to pay for this as a service, shining your keycaps would cost you $150+. Lubing your switches on the other hand would cost you $30-$40.

@@Magniboards I hear you. Personally I don't know if I like the shine in general, but I understand why you would like it. By the way if you want to practice on SA keycaps that don't cost as much, I do have SA blanks at ohkeycaps. I would be hesitant to play with different methods on keycaps from an actual SA set, especially with the after market prices being what they are.

Yeah, it really depends on the user/owner. I tried it because it looked nice on a board, plus I think it's an alternative to used keycap sets. I'll try it next on used and battered GMK sets.
