This song was so popular. People would jam the dance floors for this song. On the chorus everyone would sing along. Those were the days my friend. Jim Croce had some wonderful songs and it's sad to think what might have been. Great reaction. Thanks Harri and Tevian. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦

Another great folk rock singer songwriter who we lost so young. This is the music I grew up with. Unique storyteller & ballad singer. He touches your soul. He had a lot of great hits in his short career. "Photographs & Memories", "Operator", "You Don't Mess Around With Jim", "I Got A Name", "Workin' At The Car Wash Blues," "I'll Have To Say I Love You In A Song", "Roller Derby Queen", "Lover's Cross" etc.

I used to manage a bar that catered to a range of ages and styles. Great location. 😉 This was one of those songs I could play to reset a mood and unify people. It gets people toe tapping and jovial. Great sing along. We named our rescue pup Leroy Brown. But he grew up to be the goofy-est, friendly big dog. No more junkyard days. Just living his best couch life.

The piano riff sound on this is not Elton John grand piano it's the sound of an upright in a bar room. Jim wrote the song and recorded it in 1972 - Frank Sinatra didn't record it until 1974. I prefer Jim's version because it sounds like he lived it - Frank's version is more polished, but IMO a polished version of this song is the mirror image of a football crowd chanting a Mozart concerto! If you're looking for another such song from Jim, "Roller Derby Queen" should do it .

Jim's producer Tommy West is playing piano on this track. West and Terry Cashman were a popular producing team in the '70s. The Elton John influence might have been with West & Cashman. Croce was much more in the folk-rock tradition than pop.

08:05 Harri, Ritchie Valens (of La Bamba fame) died on a plane with Buddy Holly and J.P. Richardson (The Big Bopper), not Otis. Interestingly, Holly's bassist, none other than future country legend Waylon Jennings, had given up his seat to Richardson because Richardson had the flu (and the tour bus would have made it worse). This was immortalized as _The Day The Music Died_ by Don McLean in his song _American Pie._

Considering they were contemporaries of each other, Jim Croce and Elton John, I don't think one influenced the other. But in a way, those early 60's and 70's artists, kind of all sounded similar. As a child when this came out, it was a way to sing a song and fly under the radar while cursing, using words like "damn".

Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and The Big Bopper died in the same plane crash. Waylon Jennings gave his seat to J.P.(The Big Bopper) Richardson. Dion claims he also declined the flight. Don McLean wrote 'The Day the Music Died' inspired by that tragedy.

Hi Harri ... the name of the guy who played the piano on this song is, Tommy West, and I think that his piano playing is what makes you think of Elton John. However, when I researched him, I couldn't find any info on his early influences, but he was playing way before Elton John came to the foreground. Remember, Elton John chose to remain in the shadows for a long time, content being just a songwriter. It was years later that he was thrust into the limelight, and that would have been long after Tommy had developed his own personal musical style. It's more likely that BOTH came into music around the same time and were affected by the same influences, and that's why they sound similar. Elton John has stated that initially, his own influences were Elvis Presley and Bill Haley & His Comets, and then later, Little Richard and Jerry Lee Lewis, and I'll bet, if you think about it, you'll realize that Elton John sounds like a melding of those 4 artists. Anyway, as far as this song goes, yeah, it sounds a bit like Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting, and that 's probably what you're hearing/reacting to. That means, you must try forgetting or ignoring the piano so you can concentrate on Jim Croce's own sound and uniqueness. After all, Tommy West is just a session musician on the recording, not the actual artist, and would NOT have been touring with him when he played his songs live.

Way too many musicians have died in plane crashes. February 3, 1959 was memorialized by Don McLean as "The Day the Music Died" in his song "American Pie"; we lost Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, & The Big Bopper. Besides Otis Redding and Stevie Ray Vaughan that you mentioned, we also lost half of the band Lynyrd Skynyrd in a plane crash in 1977. John Denver crashed in the experimental plane he was piloting. Ozzy Osbournes's guitarist Randy Rhoads died in a stupid plane stunt. Also, Glenn Miller, Patsy Cline, Ricky Nelson, and Aaliyah were all killed in plane crashes. So heart-breaking.
