YOU MEAN 2-5-1 or 5-1 (with a tritone sub! The way it’s phrased here is so confusing and generally speaking it is not taught this way - at least not in jazz, which is what I do! For anyone reading, fatness is not the reason you can sub a 5 for a ‘flat 2’. The reason why tritones subs works is because the tritone in both the 5 chord and the flat 2 chord are the same. I.e if we took a 2-5-1 in the key of C it is Dmin, G dom, C maj. However if you substitute the G dom for a C sharp Dom …both the C sharp dom and G dom have a F and B which is a tritone!! Without that the sub generally doesn’t work! I hope this clears the air
